Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the first time, this study considers manuscript materials from a range of depositories to reconstruct Mallet's complex personality and to oppose this "character" to the one that Johnson published in the Lives of the Poets. This study reads Mallet as an important voice within the eighteenth-century literary scene and the milieu of Opposition writers, a man whose friendship Aaron Hill, Pope, and Lord Bolingbroke valued, a prolific writer who - owing to his conflicting interests and allegiances - frequently involved himself in controversy."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis David Bowie and the Art of Music Video by : Lisa Perrott
Download or read book David Bowie and the Art of Music Video written by Lisa Perrott and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-depth study of David Bowie's music videos across a sustained period takes on interweaving storyworlds of an iconic career. Remarkable for their capacity to conjure elaborate imagery, Bowie's videos provide fascinating exemplars of the artistry and remediation of music video. When their construction is examined across several years, they appear as time-travelling vessels, transporting kooky characters and strange story-world components across time and space. By charting Bowie's creative and collaborative process across five distinct phases, David Bowie and the Art of Music Video shows how he played a vital role in establishing music video as an artform. Filling a gap in the existing literature, this book shines a light on the significant contributions of directors such as Mick Rock, Stanley Dorfman and David Mallet, each of whom taught Bowie much about how to use the form. By examining Bowie's collaborative process, his use of surrealist strategies and his integration of avant-garde art with popular music and media, the book provides a history of music video in relation to the broader fields of audiovisual media, visual music and art.

Book Synopsis Literature and Union by : Gerard Carruthers
Download or read book Literature and Union written by Gerard Carruthers and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature and Union opens up a new front in interdisciplinary literary studies. There has been a great deal of academic work—both in the Scottish context and more broadly—on the relationship between literature and nationhood, yet almost none on the relationship between literature and unions. This volume introduces the insights of the new British history into mainstream Scottish literary scholarship. The contributors, who are from all shades of the political spectrum, will interrogate from various angles the assumption of a binary opposition between organic Scottish values and those supposedly imposed by an overbearing imperial England. Viewing Scottish literature as a clash between Scottish and English identities loses sight of the internal Scottish political and religious divisions, which, far more than issues of nationhood and union, were the primary sources of conflict in Scottish culture for most of the period of Union, until at least the early twentieth century. The aim of the volume is to reconstruct the story of Scottish literature along lines which are more historically persuasive than those of the prevailing grand narratives in the field. The chapters fall into three groups: (1) those which highlight canonical moments in Scottish literary Unionism—John Bull, 'Rule, Britannia', Humphry Clinker, Ivanhoe and England, their England; (2) those which investigate key themes and problems, including the Unions of 1603 and 1707, Scottish Augustanism, the Burns Cult, Whig-Presbyterian and sentimental Jacobite literatures; and (3) comparative pieces on European and Anglo-Irish phenomena.
Book Synopsis The Life of David Hume by : Ernest Campbell Mossner
Download or read book The Life of David Hume written by Ernest Campbell Mossner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mossner's Life of David Hume remains the standard biography of this great thinker and writer. First published in 1954, and updated in 1980, this excellent life story is now reissued in paperback, in response to an overwhelming interest in Hume's brilliant ideas. Containing more than a simple biography, this exemplary work is also a study of intellectual reaction in the eighteenth century. In this new edition are a detailed bibliography, index, and textual supplements, making it the perfect text for scholars and advanced students of Hume, epistemology, and the history of philosophy. It is also ideal for historians and literary scholars working on the eighteenth century, and for anyone with an interest in philosophy.
