Book Synopsis Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates by : Grethe R. Hasle
Download or read book Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates written by Grethe R. Hasle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-01-25 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates is the second identification manual created from the literature developed for the Advanced International Phytoplankton Course. This version, enlarged and modified from the earlier literature, deals with the identification of marine diatoms and dinoflagellates. The data and references presented here should allow the researcher to pursue the question of valid species and how they can be verified. This volume comprises three chapters, beginning with an introductory chapter discussing the subject's historical background. The next chapter focuses on marine diatoms, providing an introduction that describes their general characteristics, life cycles, morphology and terminology, and classification. It is followed by a discussion of genera represented in marine plankton, a description of taxa, and methodology. The third and final chapter focuses on dinoflagellates, beginning with an introduction that describes their general characteristics and eukaryotic unicells. The discussion continues with terminology and morphology, identification of species, techniques for preparation of dinoflagellates for identification, common dinoflagellate synonyms, and an index of dinoflagellate taxa. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology, zoology, and environmental protection.

Download or read book North Sea Dynamics written by Jürgen Sündermann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the International Sym posium on North Sea Dynamics which was held in Hamburg, August 31 - September 4, 1981. More than 150 participants from 10 coun tries were present at the Symposium. Of the 58 lectures given, 45 are printed in this book. The manuscripts were reviewed by an international advisory board. The main goal of the organizers was to bring together as many active researchers as possible in this very general field of North Sea dynarnics, transcending the boundaries of the countries and the various disciplines involved, in order to discuss the main problems and future trends. In the ten years since the last comparable meeting in Aviemore, Scotland, several large interna tional experiments (JONSDAP '73 and '76, JONSWAP '73, '75 and '77, MARSEN '79) and new developments in modelling promised a rewarding exchange of ideas. In addition to the physical disci plines, biologists and geologists are increasingly able to pre sent quantitative analyses.

Book Synopsis The Oosterschelde Estuary (The Netherlands): a Case-Study of a Changing Ecosystem by : P.H. Nienhuis
Download or read book The Oosterschelde Estuary (The Netherlands): a Case-Study of a Changing Ecosystem written by P.H. Nienhuis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oosterschelde estuary is one of the estuaries in the Netherlands which remained after the Delta scheme was completed in 1986. In the seventies the Oosterschelde became a national symbol of the change in political thinking and decision making about the values of our natural environment. As a result of political decision a storm surge barrier was built in the mouth of the estuary, as a compromise between safety for the human population and nature conservation. Owing to the broad interest in the meaning of the Oosterschelde estuary for Dutch and international societies, it became one of the most intensively studied coastal ecosystems in Western Europe. In an interdisciplinary approach of several state agencies and universities, a broad spectrum of physical, chemical and biological research has been carried out during the period of 1980--1989, dedicated to the structure and functioning of the saline ecosystem. The undisturbed estuary was studied during the period between 1980--1984. Large mathematical models had been constructed before 1986, to simulate future changes in the ecosystem. Further studies after the completion of the storm surge barrier (1986--1989) have been used for verification of the model. The integrated and summarized knowledge of the Oosterschelde ecosystem is used by water managers and nature and fisheries conservationists. A case study for professional civil engineers, ecologists, marine biologists, water managers, decision makers, university students and anyone interested in physical, chemical and biological estuarine and coastal sciences.
