Lands, in what are now designated the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Ontario, were offered for settlement. Coming from New York and other agricultural states, many of the im migrants chose Ontario, settling for the most part within easy distance of the Great Lakes waterway. With their coming, the pioneer period of agri culture in Ontario may be said to have begun. Nearly all of those who came at first were of humble origin, of honest purpose, and almost destitute of means. For two or three years, owing to crop failures and lack of equipment, they received some aid from the Government. A considerable proportion of these first settlers were Loyalists, and mingling with them were discharged soldiers, many of them Hessians, who took up land in preference to returning to Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Life Among the Loyalists in Upper Canada In the following pages I have endeavour ed to bring the reader into closer touch with the first settlers. Many excellent historical works have traced the development of our province and laid before us the achieve ments of our public men. In vain may we turn over volume after volume in our search for information concerning the evolution of the homestead, and the customs and peculiarities of the commoii folk of long ago. For the most part the sources of my infor mation have been original documents and interviews with old men and women, many of whom have since passed away. Even from such sources it is an easy matter to fall into error; but I have discarded what I feared was not trustworthy, and believe that I can confidently ask the reader to accept the general statements of facts as thorough ly reliable. Even fo1 cabin passengers there were many hardships, and the vast majority of emigrants travelled steerage. Se long was the voyage, so poor were the living quarters and food, and so great the danger from sickness, that one wonders at the courage of our pioneer ancestors ir attempting it. Only the worst of conditions at home could drive men and women to undergo the sufferings of a passage in an emigrant ship, lacking comforts anc even food. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers in Canada The publishers of this book asked me to write a series of works for the reading of boys and girls which should deal with "real adventures," in parts of the world either wild and uncontrolled by any civilized government, or at any rate regions full of dangers, of wonderful discoveries; in which the daring and heroism of white men (and sometime of white women) stood out clearly against backgrounds of unfamiliar landscapes, peopled with strange nations, savage tribes, dangerous beasts, or wonderful birds. These books would again and again illustrate the first coming of the white race into regions inhabited by people of a different type, with brown, black, or yellow skins; how the European was received, and how he treated these races of the soil which gradually came under his rule owing to his superior knowledge, weapons, wealth, or powers of persuasion. The books were to tell the plain truth, even if here and there they showed the white man to have behaved badly, or if they revealed the fact that the American Indian, the Negro, the Malay, the black Australian was sometimes cruel and treacherous. After this chance meeting it was always pleasant to meet dear old Dick in the show ring, at the International, or under the shadow of the Rockies when we made a trip to the Colorado sheep feeding grounds. Among other qualities, he had a facile pen and it ran riot when he got on old days, among English villages, or simple homesteads, with cows that were rich at the pail, or towering castles, forhe was born under the walls of Belvoir where horse, hound and huntsman went merrily forth on winter morn ings to pursue the fox. It is well that he lived in those days; that the glamor hanging round, festooned by gar lands and fairy-like in its rich colors, should have guarded his life from these sad scenes which to-day are written deep in blood on the fields of Flanders or pierce the quiet of some little thatched cottage with its latticed windows and trailing roses amid English meadow lands from whence father or son responded to the call of his country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trail of Love: An Appreciation of Canadian Pioneers, and Pioneer Life The time and place of one's birth have more influence on our own lives and on those of others than most of us imagine. It was my good fortune to be born of parents who hewed their home out of the Canadian wil derness, and to spend my early years among the pioneers of Wentworth and Halton Counties in the Province of Ontario, the simplicity and honesty of whose lives has been steadfastly engraved upon my memory. As a result, it is perhaps only natural that a most persistent call has come to me to record in a way that will be imperishable a few of the virtues of these honest and upright lives. Were it not for my great love for my father and mother and the men and women of their generation, and did I not believe that a record of some of the events of those noble lives would be an inspiration to the young people of our land, I would not have undertaken the preparation of this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Tale of Plain People: Pioneer Life in New Ontario; The Great Clay BeltIn the month of August, 1912, I made up my mind to go to Northern Ontario. I left Toronto on the first of September, arriving next day at my destination. My first impressions of the country were not at all encouraging. All the good lots in the township in which I intended to locate appeared to have been already taken, or they were veteran claims, and as such not open for settlement. The lots which I examined were not at all like what I had been led to expect. The small clearings of the settlers full of stumps, their rough log cabins and the thickness of the timber on the ground brought home to me in a very forcible manner the fact that I must not expect any rosy pathway to the realization of my dreams of a good farm in this country.A young man who was cutting wood in front of his shack was anxious to talk. He had been about two years in the country. His faith was strong; so was his sense of hospitality. Would I stay with him a few days while I looked around? I would be delighted. We sat and talked till late in the evening. I learned much from him about the country. He imbued me with some of his faith in its future, and he assured me that success lay before every man who was ready and willing to work; who was not easily discouraged and had a reasonable amount of courage and determination. That night, for the first time in my life, I slept in a rough bunk, on a bed of straw with only rough grey blankets and my coat for a pill-ow.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. His means of information have been of a more than ordinary character, and these he has endeavored to improve by personal enquiry and visiting the localities, so far as possible, where the scenes are laid and depicted. There is, as will be seen, a large amount of information supplied, which he would fain hope may be found useful in adding to the historic fund of other writers, who have already placed themselves on record on the same subject as historians of early pioneer life in Canada. Real and homely as his talc has been told, there will still be found no lack of romantic incidents and chapters of much interest to the general reader. The book, in a word, is the author's humble contribution to the history of the early days of his native province. Access to old manuscripts and records of family events retained in both his father's and mother's families for a century and more, has helped him to a very great extent in carrying out the design which he had in view when he first commenced what, to him, was a labor of love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colin of the Ninth Concession a Tale of Scottish Pioneer Life in Eastern Ontario With the downfall of Napoleon, the mighty tempest that had begun with the French Revolution subsided and died away into a period of calm; but its effects were far-reaching. Into the vast, unbroken forest that lay for thousands of miles westward and northward from the Ottawa River, unpeopled save by a few wandering Algonquins, it had borne onwards a little colony of Scottish immigrants - disbanded soldiers from Wellington's armies and a number of their friends and neighbours, accompanied by their families. They set out to make a home for themselves in a land where they would be the owners of their own farmsteads. Entering the primeval forest, they selected their acres of trees and set to work to hew out a clearing and to plant their grain and garden seeds among the stumps. To the pioneers in other parts of the forest this district became known as "the Scotch Settlement." It forms to-day several townships in the eastern portion of the Canadian province of Ontario.
