Book Synopsis THE WOOLVERTON FAMILY: 1693 – 1850 and Beyond, Volume II by : David A. Macdonald

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Woolverton was in Burlington County, New Jersey, by 1693, and appears in records there and in Hunterdon County until 1727. David Macdonald and Nancy McAdams have traced Charles' descendants to the seventh generation, by which time they had spread out to many parts of the country ... This is a beautifully crafted genealogy. The format is easy to follow, and the documentation is impressive. The compilers have carefully explained their handling of problem areas, including the need to refute longstanding family lore about the immigrant ... This is an exemplary work, which descendants will certainly value and other genealogists would be well advised to study. -- Excerpts from a review published in the April 2003 issue of The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record and reprinted with permission of the author, Harry Macy, Jr. and The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.

Book Synopsis Showplace of America by : Jan Cigliano
Download or read book Showplace of America written by Jan Cigliano and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In cooperation with Western Reserve Historical Society Euclid Avenue, which runs through the heart of downtown Cleveland, was for 60 years one of the finest residential streets of any city in 19th century America. Showplace of America is the fascinating account of the rise and fall of this elegant promenade, including portrayals of the eminent architects who created its opulent residences and colorful details about the lives of the wealthy people who occupied them. The families who resided within this linear, four-mile neighborhood epitomized Midwestern grandeur in the second half of the 19th century. The 1893 Baedeker's travel guide to the United States labeled it "one of the most beautiful residence-streets in America," as others hailed it "Millionaires' Row," the finest avenue in the west, and the most beautiful street in the world." Modeled after the grand boulevards of Europe, this magnificent neighborhood was distinguished for the prominence of its architects as well as the families who lived there. Local architects Jonathan Goldsmith, Charles W. Heard, Levi T. Scofield, Charles F. Schweinfurth, and Coburn & Barnum and national firms Peabody & Stearns and McKim, Mead & White created houses that were stunning monuments to Cleveland and America's growing prosperity. Ironically, the tremendous success of Cleveland's industry and commerce, which had nurtured the rise of this grand avenue, fostered its fall. Downtown commerce expanded along the avenue at the sacrifice of its leading entrepreneurs' residential have. The houses were demolished as the avenue became what is today--a neglected urban thoroughfare. Photographs and illustrations from the archives of the Western Reserve Historical Society and other repositories are published here for the first time, documenting both the glory and decline of the "showplace of America."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erie Street Cemetery is Clevelands oldest existing cemetery. Today downtown Cleveland towers over this peaceful plot of land, which has remained essentially unchanged since it was opened as a burial ground in 1826 at the far edge of the town, whose population was only about 800 at the time. Within the cemetery are the graves of soldiers who served in the Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Mexican War, and the Spanish-American War, and it is the last resting place of many of the citys early leaders and pioneer families.
Book Synopsis Spiritualism's Place by : Averill Earls
Download or read book Spiritualism's Place written by Averill Earls and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spiritualism's Place, four friends and scholars who produce the acclaimed Dig: A History Podcast, share their curiosity and enthusiasm for uncovering stories from the past as they explore the history of Lily Dale. Located in western New York State, the world's largest center for Spiritualism was founded in 1879. Lily Dale has been a home for Spiritualists attempting to make contact with the dead, as well as a gathering place for reformers, a refuge for seekers looking for alternatives to established paths of knowledge, and a target for skeptics. This intimate history of Lily Dale reveals the role that this fascinating place has played within the history of Spiritualism, as well as within the development of the women's suffrage and temperance movements, and the world of New Age religion. As an intentional community devoted to Spiritualist beliefs and practices, Lily Dale brings together multiple strands in the social and religious history of New York and the United States over the past 150 years: feminism, social reform, utopianism, new religious movements, and cultural appropriation. Podcasters and historians alike, Averill Earls, Sarah Handley-Cousins, Elizabeth Garner Masarik, and Marissa C. Rhodes each identify one site in Lily Dale and one theme that its history illuminates. They use those sites and themes to approach Lily Dale not as debunkers but as inquisitive researchers and storytellers. At the same time, they also reflect on their own relationships contending that it's never quite possible to separate grief, hope, faith, and friendship from understandings of the past. Spiritualism's Place breaks myths, unveils unexpected stories, and finds new ways to contemplate Spiritualism's role in American history.
