Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizing the theoretical and experimental advances in pion-nucleon interactions over approximately the last twelve years, the authors offer here a timely account of the hadronic interactions of pions and nucleons and of the structure of nucleons. Because of the hadronic SU3 symmetry, the book also treats the structure of baryons in general, and so contains much material external to the specific field of pion-nucleon interactions. Thus the book's subject can be stated as the hadronic structure of baryons as illustrated particularly by pion-nucleon interaction. Following an introductory discussion of isotopic spin, the authors proceed to chapters that treat low energy pion scattering by nucleons and the photoproduction of pions; forward and fixed momentum transfer dispersion relations; analytic properties of scattering amplitudes; formation of nucleon resonances; symmetries and classification of particles and resonances; current algebra, sum rules, and superconvergence relations; scattering at higher energies; pion-nucleon dynamics; pion-nucleon inelastic scattering; and the form factors of the nucleon and the pion. Each chapter is followed by abundant references to the original literature. The level of the writing is suitable for students at the graduate level, and the presentation is even and self-contained. On balance, the authors have prepared a useful consolidation and review of this difficult and changing area of investigation. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book excerpt: The investigation of hadronic and nuclear probes with protons and electrons in the energy range of a few GeV is of great importance for the understanding of the properties of nucleons and mesons as well as of their interaction. Experimental results from studies with these beams provide the basis for the development and the tests of theoretical approaches in the energy regime of non-perturbative QCD. They can also clarify the effect of the nuclear medium on elementary reactions. The conference has reviewed the present status of this field of research. The topics have beenThe conference topics comprised investigations near energy thresholds in the tradition of the conferences on Particle Production near Threshold in Nashville, IN, USA, 1990, and Uppsala, Sweden, 1992.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this book represent an exciting contribution to the growing body of experimental and theoretical research into exotic hadrons. The prime focus of the volume is the latest work on pentaquark baryons. The in-depth experimental reports cover both positive and negative evidence for the existence of various combinations of particles, and photo-electro production, hadronic production and high-energy processes are discussed in detail.Important theoretical areas of current interest are considered, including chiral solitons, constituent quarks, the QCD sum rule, lattice QCD, production reactions, and the determination of spin and parity. The volume features the work of two pioneering theorists, H Lipkin and D Diakonov, among the comprehensive coverage of the latest theoretical ideas in the field. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pion plays an outstanding role in nuclear physics as a generator of the nuclear force and as an important part of the nuclear many-body problem. At the same time, pion beams are used as probes to explore the nucleus and its interactions. As pion physics has matured over the years, a rich and diverse variety of phenomena has been uncovered. The aim of this book is to examine the underlying physical picture behind these phenomena in a systematic and coherent way. The authors emphasize the interplay between physical concepts and experimental facts more than the formal tools, which are presented in a series of appendices. The book is directed towards advanced students as well as research workers.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute "New Vistas in Electro-Nuclear Physics" was held in Banff, Alberta, Canada from August 22 to September 4, 1985. This volume con tains the lecture notes from that Institute. The idea to organize this Institute coincided with the award of funding for a pulse stretcher ring at the University of Saskatchewan's Linear Accelerator Laboratory. This together with the high level of interest in electron accelerators worldwide convinced us that it was an appropriate time to discuss the physics to be learned with such machines. In particular that physics which requires high energy and/or high duty cycle accelerators for its extraction was intended to be the focus of the Institute. Thus the scope of the lec tures was wide, with topics ranging from the structure of the trinucleons to quark models of nucleons, QCD, and QHD. The theme however was that we are just trying to under stand the nucleus and that the electromagnetic probe can serve as a powerful tool in such a quest.

Book excerpt: Advanced Quantum Theory is a concised, comprehensive, well-organized text based on the techniques used in theoretical elementary particle physics and extended to other branches of modern physics as well. While it is especially valuable reading for students and professors of physics, a less cursory survey should aid the nonspecialist in mastering the principles and calculational tools that probe the quantum nature of the fundamental forces. The initial application is to nonrelativistic scattering graphs encountered in atomic, solid state, and nuclear physics. Then, focusing on relativistic Feynman Diagrams and their construction in lowest order — applied to electromagnetic, strong, weak, and gravitational interactions — this bestseller also covers relativistic quantum theory based on group theoretical language, scattering theory, and finite parts of higher order graphs. This new edition includes two chapters on the quark model at low energies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past five years, my editor at Springer-Verlag has asked me to write a second edition of this text that would incorporate new material on the quark model. Because this is a subject at the forefront of modern physics, whose central ideas are perpetually in flux, such an addition is not a simple task. Nevertheless, I have tried to discuss quark model topics that should stand the test of time and be of interest to introductory advanced quantum mechanics students as examples of the Feynman diagram technique. I have also tried to eliminate errors made in the first edition. I appreciate the work of R. Miller, who graciously typed the additional material. My colleagues V. Elias, T. Hakioglu, S. Kocic, N. Paver, and R. Thews helped me formulate the quark model chapter. Tucson, Arizona M. D. Scadron May 1990 vii Preface to the First Edition The fundamental goal of physics is an understanding of the forces of nature in their simplest and most general terms. Yet the scientific method inadver tently steers us away from that course by requiring an ever finer subdivision of the problem into constituent components, so that the overall objective is often obscured, even to the experts. The situation is most frustrating and acute for today's graduate students, who must try to absorb as much general knowledge as is possible and also try to digest only a small fraction of the ever increasing morass of observational data or detailed theories to write a dissertation.
