Book Synopsis Book of Jeremiah by : Susan Williams Smith
Download or read book Book of Jeremiah written by Susan Williams Smith and published by The Pilgrim Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., will forever be linked to the historical 2008 presidential campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama. Although unwillingly thrust into the spotlight, the media attention could never overshadow Wright’s prophetic teachings, nor does it define his life and ministry. "The Book of Jeremiah" examines the man, an African American, a patriot who served his country, a scholar, a prophet, and a pastor. The relevance of his ministry reaches far beyond his pastorate at Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago. Wright's ministry has transcended to a global stage with a message of liberation and justice. Smith provides the most comprehensive picture of the Rev. Wright, and as a close confidante, sheds light on his upbringing, teaching and preaching influences, and the far-reaching effects of his ministry on Barack Obama and the world.

Book Synopsis Pilgrim Letters by : Curtis W. Freeman
Download or read book Pilgrim Letters written by Curtis W. Freeman and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pilgrim Letters, Curtis Freeman takes disciples on a contemporary journey into an ancient faith. The book is a series of letters written by "Interpreter" to "Pilgrim" that provide "instruction in the basic teaching of Christ" for candidates preparing to be baptized. The letters are framed by a short catechism based on the six principles enumerated in Hebrews 6:1-2--(1) repentance, (2) faith, (3) baptism, (4) laying on of hands, (5) resurrection, and (6) eternal judgment. The letters lead Pilgrim (the disciple/catechumen/baptismal candidate) step by step through the basics of Christian faith. Each letter explores one of the principles by providing a simple explanation and setting the practice within a broad biblical, historical, and theological context. The theological tenor of the letters is evangelical-catholic, free church-ecumenical, and ancient-future. A set of discussion questions follows each letter as does a short bibliography for further reading. Each letter begins with an image from William Blake's illustrations of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress and exemplifying the subject of the letter, followed by an epigraph from the story that fits into the themes of the catechism.

Download or read book The Pilgrim's Compass written by Paul H. Lang and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we make our way into the twenty-first century, many Christians are looking for an expression of discipleship that speaks meaningfully to our time, a faith yearning that is at once personally intimate and relevant and that grows out of and nurtures authentic Christian community. The Pilgrim's Compass shepherds readers through a metaphorical pilgrimage to consider one's life a journey for faith formation. Using this book as a guide to help Christians consider their journey as they walk through the four stages of intentional faithfulness, disciples will encounter God, wrestle with God, be wounded as will God, and be reborn as a new person with a new name. The Pilgrim's Compass encourages individuals to embrace the ancient practice of pilgrimage both as metaphor for the daily walk of discipleship and as an intentional journey of faith, which uses prayerful travel to assist an inner transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism is a very special moment in the Christian journey. It is a moment of awe and wonder, and of recognition that we are accepted by God and special in his sight.Getting Ready for Baptism recognises that baptism can take place at any age and stage of life. Its aim is to deepen understanding of the biblical background to baptism for all involved and to explore what it means to be a child of God. With the emphasis on facilitating rather than a teacher-led approach, the material seeks to encourage all those involved in the sacrament, whether they are the candidate, the parent, godparent, friend, extended family member or member of the church community.Part 1 focuses on baptism as a ministry. It explores the relationship between the candidate, parents and godparents, examines the place of discipleship for those taking part, considers the implications of baptism for the whole worshipping community, and places the emphasis on baptism being a step to belonging as well as a statement of belief. Part 2 offers three practical sessions: Come to the party!, Enjoy the party! and Party on! A task-based activity book is available separately to help the child make a personal record of his or her baptism journey.

Book excerpt: "Riveting, gut ripping, and utterly, utterly beautiful." - Rod Burn In the small fishing village of the Baai, somewhere on the west coast of Africa, a boy's line cuts through the water. With scissoring strokes he hauls a creature from the deep. It kicks, and bucks, an animal he does not know. Intently he watches as it rises... Jono is a lonely fisherman who must work hard to pay the debt he owes. Uncle Mike is a factory owner trying desperately to stay above water. The Baai is a tiny town, peopled with those who have fished the same way for generations. And now there are no fish. When a race of foreigners arrive with ships that stagger the ways of the Baai's simple folk, it seems the village will be washed away by the tide of the turning world. But for one boy with an uncommon talent: he can hear the thoughts of fishes. For in the deep a secret lies buried, and through Jono's line it must come tumbling out.
