Book Synopsis An Intellectual History for India by : Shruti Kapila
Download or read book An Intellectual History for India written by Shruti Kapila and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the power of ideas in the making of Indian political modernity. As an intermediate history of connections between South Asia and the global arena the volume raises new issues in intellectual history. It reviews the period from the emergence of constitutional liberalism in the1830s, through the swadeshi era to the writings of Tilak, Azad and Gandhi in the twentieth century. While several contributions reflect on the ideologies of nationalism, the volume seeks to rescue intellectual history from being simply a narration of the nation-state. It does not seek to create a 'canon' of political thought so much as to show how Indian concepts of state and society were redrawn in the context of emergent globalized debates about freedom, the constitution of the self and the good society in the late colonial era. In so doing the contributions here resituate an Indian intellectual history that has long been eclipsed by social and political history. These essays were originally published in a Special issue of the journal Modern Intellectual History (CUP, April 2007).
Download or read book Historiography written by Ernst Breisach and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering work, Ernst Breisach presents an effective, well-organized, and concise account of the development of historiography in Western culture. Neither a handbook nor an encyclopedia, this up-to-date third edition narrates and interprets the development of historiography from its origins in Greek poetry to the present, with compelling sections on postmodernism, deconstructionism, African-American history, women’s history, microhistory, the Historikerstreit, cultural history, and more. The definitive look at the writing of history by a historian, Historiography provides key insights into some of the most important issues, debates and innovations in modern historiography. Praise for the first edition: “Breisach’s comprehensive coverage of the subject and his clear presentation of the issues and the complexity of an evolving discipline easily make his work the best of its kind.”—Lester D. Stephens, American Historical Review

Book Synopsis French Royal Women during the Restoration and July Monarchy by : Heta Aali
Download or read book French Royal Women during the Restoration and July Monarchy written by Heta Aali and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines public discussions around France's four most prominent royal women during the first and second Restoration and July Monarchy: the duchesse d’Angoulême, the duchesse de Berry, Queen of the French Marie-Amélie, and Adélaïde d’Orléans. These were the most powerful women of the last decades of the French monarchy, but the new roles women were assigned in post-revolutionary France did not permit them to openly exercise political influence. This book explores continuities and variations in narratives of royal legitimacy, and how historians, authors, and politicians used national history - particularly medieval and early modern history - to either legitimize or undermine the French monarchy, and to define women's social and political roles.

Book Synopsis The Oxford History of Historical Writing by : Stuart Macintyre
Download or read book The Oxford History of Historical Writing written by Stuart Macintyre and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 4 of The Oxford History of Historical Writing offers essays by leading scholars on the writing of history globally from 1800 to 1945. Divided into four parts, it first covers the rise, consolidation, and crisis of European historical thought, and the professionalization and institutionalization of history. The chapters in Part II analyze how historical scholarship connected to various European national traditions. Part III considers the historical writing of Europe's 'Offspring': the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, and Spanish South America. The concluding part is devoted to histories of non-European cultural traditions: China, Japan, India, South East Asia, Turkey, the Arab world, and Sub-Saharan Africa. This is the fourth of five volumes in a series that explores representations of the past from the beginning of writing to the present day, and from all over the world. This volume aims at once to provide an authoritative survey of the field, and especially to provoke cross-cultural comparisons.
Book Synopsis French Historians in the Nineteenth Century by : F.L. van Holthoon
Download or read book French Historians in the Nineteenth Century written by F.L. van Holthoon and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a reflection on the major historians of nineteenth-century France, and shows that, near the end of the century, a major change of perspective occurred. The historians discussed in the opening sections of the book looked to the past for guidance, while modern historians from the twentieth-century onwards regard the past as a closed book which the historian has to open. Guizot is the hero of the first section of the book; in part two, Comtesse d’Agoult (Daniel Stern) is specifically mentioned, partly because she, who wrote a splendid history of the revolution of 1848, tends to be ignored as a historian while Michelet and Tocqueville are still discussed. The historians in part three are transitional figures who politically and morally still belong to the nineteenth-century, but whose histories show the new approach to the past.
