Smallman focuses on the principal works in the trio repertoire, and trovides clear analytical descriptions supplemented by musical examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak of "classical music" it often refers rather loosely to serious "art" music but at the core is really the music of the classical period running from about 1730 to 1800, give or take. This was truly one of the most glorious periods for both composition and performance and it is this classical music which is still at the core of today's repertoire. Obvious names connected with this period are Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, but there were many more still reasonably well known like Gluck and C.P.E Bach, and dozens more who are regrettably little known today. This Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period includes not only these composers, but also eminent conductors and performers, patrons, and publishers. There are also dictionary entries on major centers of music-making, typical instruments, important technical terms, and emerging musical forms, including the symphony and opera. Indeed, with a 1,000 cross-referenced entries, there is information on most matters of interest. This is prefaced by an extensive chronology, tracing the course of this period from year to year, and an introduction taking a careful look at the period as a whole. Finally, there is a substantial bibliography. Surely, this is a book which will appeal not only to students and researchers but all music-lovers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned primarily with the development of the piano quartet and quintet from the mid-eighteenth century to the present day, but refers also to several important works for larger ensembles. Developments during the first four decades of the nineteenth century resulted not only in Schubert's renowned 'Trout' Quintet, but also in virtuoso compositions by Dussek, Hummel, Weber, and others, in which the piano predominates in a concerto-like role. Subsequently, Schumann's epoch-making quintet of 1842 initiated a broadly 'symphonic' style, which was adopted by many later composers, including Brahms, Dvorak, Cesar Frank, Faure, and Elgar. Amongst recent changes to the nature of the genres special consideration is given to works by Schoenberg, Messiaen, Stravinsky, and others, in which 'mixed' media are formed by combining wind instruments with the normal strings-and-piano ensembles. Within his broad historical narrative Professor Smallman provides descriptive analyses of key works, many with music examples, and also comments perceptively on local trends and developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally renowned scholars and performers present a wide range of new analytical, historical and critical perspectives on some of Mozart's most popular chamber music: his sonatas with violin, keyboard trios and quartets and the quintet with wind instruments. The chapters trace a broad chronology, from the childhood works, to the Mannheim and Paris sonatas with keyboard and violin, and the mature compositions from his Vienna years. Drawing upon the most recent research, this study serves the reader, be they a performer, listener or scholar, with a collection of writings that demonstrate the composer's innovative developments to generic archetypes and which explore and assess Mozart's creative response to the opportunities afforded by new and diverse instrumental combinations. Manners of performance of this music far removed from our own are revealed, with concluding chapters considering historically informed practice and the challenges for modern performers and audiences.
