Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Study of Medicine in the British Isles The first of these lectures treats of Medical Study in London during the Middle Ages, and of John Mirfeld, a physician, who lived in London in the reign of Richard II. The second lecture treats of the reading and general attainments of physicians from the foundation of our College, in 1518, to the beginning of the eighteenth century. I have described, as an example of what the course of education and the learning of a physician were at the end of this period, the studies and attainments of Dr. Edward Browne, who lived from 1644 to 1708, and was physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital. In the third and fourth lectures I have tried to show how that part of medicine which consists in the precise observation of patients grew up in England, Scotland, and Ireland; and I have particularly considered the effect of the works of Mayerne, Glisson, and Sydenham upon this study in England, and the influence of Boerhaave upon it in Scotland and Ireland. In the Appendix I have printed from the manuscript in Mayerne's hand in the British Museum his notes on the health of James I, and the report on Queen Henrietta Maria which he drew up when she thought of going abroad in 1641. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Medicine and the Medical Profession To attain both the objects thus indicated, by bringing to the notice of his colleagues, the practitioners of medicine, the history of their depart ment and their profession, was the original design of the author in the publication of the present work. For those who are interested solely in literary aims his book was not written, and accordingly he has omitted extended bibliographical notices, preferring to refer the reader for these to the larger manuals on this subject.' His plan has been to consider first the genetic side of the subject, introducing for this purpose a sketch of even prehistoric medicine, and next to set forth the history of the medical pro fession in considerable detail. In both departments he has striven to present the subject in such a manner as should awaken and maintain the interest of the reader. Whether he has failed in his purpose or fallen behind the aims which he had set before him it is not for him to decide. No man is perfect; neither is any book. But in so weighty an undertaking as the publication of a work on general history the author hopes for that indulgence which may be claimed, indeed, by every man who has done his work honestly. According to the measure of his strength, and who seeks to appear no greater than he really is. Of course. For most of the facts recorded in the present work the author is indebted to others. Still he has everywhere preserved the right of inde pendent examination and judgment as to who, among the often conflicting authorities, seems, on the whole, the most reliable. Many things, however, he has proved by reference to the original authorities, and thus made them, as it were, his own. The conception of the history of medicine as a branch of the general history of civilization, a large portion of the history of the profession and his account of the most ancient and most recent develop ments of medical art, he believes he may also justly claim as original. That the book has found so conscientious a collaborator, to whom it is indebted for considerable amplification particularly in the sections on English and American medicine, with which he was, of course, better acquainted than the author - and numerous corrections, is an advantage which no one can better appreciate than the author himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of a Physician Should the title of this volume have betrayed any of its readers into a fruitless search for the author's name in the list of M. D.'s, he will very much regret the trouble they have incurred; at the same time, he would, in all humility, suggest, that, as it is not unusual for the. disciple of AEsculapius to seek his diploma in one city, and reputation in another, they are bound carefully to examine the records of the university of Timbuctoo, ere they pronounce the author an impostor or empiric. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreations of a Physician Some of the following essays were read before difierent societies, and some of them have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association and in the Albany Medical Annals. Many friends have desired their publication in a more durable form and upon these friends rests some measure of responsibility for the present volume. The essays themselves require little preliminary comment on the part of the author, who cannot hope to shelter himself behind his friends from any criticism that may be directed at the opinions that he has endeavored to express. These Opinions will probably be found on examination to be common place rather than startling, and more sedative than sensational, but the accusation of tedium also the author must bear alone, unless some legal provision may be discovered which will enable a process-server to cross the Styx, summon certain shades and compel them to accept service; for these are the gentlemen whose opinions the author has adopted and sought to present as his own. Indeed, a cursory review of these pages has shown him how much there is in them of others and how little of himself. He has been reminded of the novel by castillo-solorzano entitled El Besden vuelto Favor, in which the letter i is not to be found from cover to cover. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John of Gaddesden and the Rosa Medicinae This study is an attempt to give some account of one who was, so far as is known, the first Englishman who was Court physician to an English monarch, and of his chief work, the Rosa Anglica, as it is generally called, though the name which he himself gave it was the Rosa Medicinae. The materials for an essay dealing with medical matters in England, or indeed in Europe during the fourteenth century, are but scanty as compared with the accounts of medicine, medical studies, and medical men which we possess belonging to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and the admirable Fitz Patrick Lectures of Dr. J. F. Payne and Dr. Norman Moore have already made English readers acquainted with the English medical men of that period. In the section dealing with the general estimation in which medical men were held during mediaeval times I have had to consult works written so far back as the twelfth century, but with the exception of Guy de Chauliac, who was ahead of his times in surgery, the medical art progressed but little between 1150 and the date of Vesalius. Indeed, if we can believe Moliere, the physicians of his time were of much the same kidney as those so amusingly satirized by John of Salisbury in about the year 1180. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctor in War As I had more than half anticipated, I found there the finest and most triumphant demonstration of what modern science can do for the protection of the health and life of an army or a nation ever given in history, equaling if not surpassing the hitherto unrivaled victory of the forces which save life on the Panama Canal. Thanks to the personal kindness of the Secretary of War, Mr. Baker, and of my friend Colonel Roosevelt, together with the courtesy of my medical colleagues, I secured letters of introduction and papers which made me successful beyond my expectations in securing permission to see almost every thing of any value or interest from a medical and public health point of view, from the Base Hospitals up to the Aid Posts in the front-line trenches and from the munition works and T raining-camps to the Hospital Ships and the British Fleet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard History of the Medical Profession of Philadelphia The object of this work is to describe the evolution of medicine in Philadelphia, from the time of Jan Petersen, the earliest practitioner on record, to the present day. It is, as all history must necessarily be, a description of events and of institutions, and, incidentally, a biograph ical record of those who have been most prominent in both. Estimates of the character of the distinguished men whose names appear on almost every page, and comparisons of institutions, have been sedulously avoided. The facts are left to speak for themselves, the true office of history being, in the words of Lord Bacon, to represent the events themselves and to leave the observations and conclusions them upon to the liberty and faculty of every man's judgment. In dealing with such a multiplicity of names, dates and events, mis takes may have crept in, in spite of the most careful supervision; but, if this be so, it is a consolation to know that many errors of previous writers have been corrected.
