Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geologic Story of Canyonlands National Park Unless credited to others, for which grateful acknowledgment is made, the color photographs were taken by me. Most of these were taken on 4 by 5 - inch film in a tripod-mounted press camera using lenses of several focal lengths, but a few were taken on 35-millimeter film. Unless credited to others, the black and white photographs were kindly loaned from the Moab and Arches files of the National Park Service. The points from which most of the photographs were taken are shown in figure 19. Although Major John Wesley Powell was not the first geologist to view the canyon lands, his two daring boat trips down the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869 and 1871 made history by bringing to light the first descriptions of the geography and geology of what was then the largest remaining uncharted wilderness in the United States. Many landmarks along the canyons in the park were named by Powell and his men during those explorations. J. S. Newberry is thought to have been the first geologist to view the canyon lands - at least he seems to have been the first one whose observations were recorded but the more comprehensive findings of Powell (1875) were the ones that made history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District: With Atlas I have in many places departed from the severe ascetic style which has become conventional in scientific monographs. Perhaps no apology is called for. Under ordinary circumstances the ascetic discipline is necessary. Give the imagination an inch and it is apt to take an ell, and the funda mental requirement of scientific method - accuracy of statement - is im periled. But. In the Grand Canon district there is no such danger. The stimulants which are demoralizing elsewhere are necessary here to exalt the mind sufficiently to comprehend the sublimity of the subjects. Their sublimity has in fact been hitherto underrated. Great as is the fame of the Grand Canon of the Colorado, the half remains to be told. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grand Canyon of Arizona: How to See It Upwards of ten years ago I sat on the south rim of the Grand Canyon and wrote In and Around the Grand Canyon. In that book I included much that more than a decade of wandering up and down the trails of this great abyss had taught me. At that time the only accommodations for isightseers were stage lines or private conveyance from Flagstaff and Ash Fork, and, on arrival at the Canyon, the crude hotel-camps at Hance's, Grand View, Bright Angel, and Bass's. The railway north from Williams was being built. Everything was crude and primitive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Around the Grand Canyon: The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona Since this book was written and published in 1900 it has been reprinted a number of times and several thousands of copies have been sold. Although the author issued in 1910 an entirely new book on the same - "The Grand Canyon of Arizona" - there is still a steady and constant demand for this larger and earlier work. It has been deemed appropriate, however, before issuing a new edition, that part of one chapter should be entirely rewritten, and an appendix added, which will contain much new and important information. A new map has also been provided which the tourist or general reader will find of material help. The reasons for these enlargements and additions are found in the many and varied changes that have taken place in the Grand Canyon; not in the Canyon itself, but in the hotel accommodations, trails, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grand Canyon of the Colorado: Recurrent Studies in Impressions and Appearances UP from the sea, from the fogs and mists of the Atlantic, the flat basin of the Mississippi, the plains of Kansas, and the low divides of eastern Colorado! Up to the great stretches of the Plateau Country where the sky is unending, the light unfailing, and the clean air still blows over an unbroken wilderness! Up from the gasolene and dust of the city, the screech of motor and engine, the bustle and roar of human endeavor, the shuffle of feet, the chatter of life! Up to the glow of the Painted Desert, the shadow of the Tusayan Forest, the color of the Grand Canyon - the Open spaces where Nature still rules supreme and man is merely a fretful midge quite unable to disturb her majestic repose.
