Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immensely varied topography of Wisconsin provides examples of nearly every important physiographic process and topographic form. In the Driftless Area to the southwest, wind and water have weathered and carved away the countryside; along the Mississippi and other rivers are found most of the essential features of stream erosion and deposition; in the north and east glaciers have ground away the hills and left their mark on the plains and swamps. The Physical Geography of Wisconsin, reprinted from the second edition, 1932, of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Bulletin No. XXXVI (1916), offers a clear explanation of these and many other physiographical processes to the student and amateur geographer alike. The topography of the state is discussed in detail and, where necessary, related to its human geography; and the author has carefully explained and indexed all unfamiliar terms. The book is well supplied with maps, charts, and illustrations, and will be an excellent supplementary reader or guide in field trips for geography courses at all levels.

The author has lived in Wisconsin ten years. During the summers of 1907 and 1908 he devoted nearly all of the college vacation to field work on the physical geography and glacial geology of the state. The expense of the first season's work was met by the United States Geological Survey, the second by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. In subsequent years he has spent many weeks in field work in connection with his teaching at the University of Wisconsin, taking parties of students for half-day, all-day, and longer excursions, including two periods of four weeks each during the summers of 1913 and 1914. In addition three days were spent in the field in 1913 with Samuel Weidman, W. O. Hotchkiss, and E. F. Bean, five days in 1914 with E. O. Ulrich, W. O. Hotchkiss, and F. T. Thwaites, three days the same year with W. O. Hotchkiss, E. F. Bean, and O. W. Wheelwright, and two weeks in 1915 with F. T. Thwaites and Walter Schoewe. The writing of this book was undertaken in the winter of 1908-9, resumed during the summer of 1912, and completed during the summer and autumn of 1915. Much of the subject matter has been tried out by presentation to students in a university course on The Geography of Wisconsin, first offered in 1910 and repeated during several semesters and summer sessions by the author and, more recently, by Prof. E. F. Bean. The author has tried to make the book simple. Most of the discussion is without technicality. Nevertheless there are ideas and phenomena which will be new to some. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Wisconsin: Part I. Wisconsin as a Whole; Part II. The Growth and Development of Cities; Part III. Statistics and Aids to Teachers In a text-book of geography we study the relation of one state or group of states to the whole country of which our home region is a part, and our commercial relations to the world as a whole. It follows that in such a treatment the characteristics that distinguish our own home regions must largely be lost to sight in the consideration of the great features that distinguish the country as a whole. In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, its products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. In this text-book the surface features, the climate, the soil and other natural resources which determine the occupations of the people are studied first because they are the large features which determine the distribution and success of industries. One of the great lessons the student learns in geography is Man's absolute dependence upon Nature for his existence. In this state, as in other regions, topography and climate pointed out the path of development that communities must follow in order to make sure their existence within its borders. In the pages that follow, the student finds traced the fundamental conditions that have moulded the life of the state. After these come the historical events that are landmarks in its growth, and then the study of the industrial and commercial features is taken up. To these, which explain the reasons for the development and growth of the larger cities, and which show us why our own region is important to the country as a whole, careful attention has been given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography and Industries of Wisconsin, Vol. 26 Among the Older states Of the East, where industrial growth has proceeded farther than it has in the West, certain geo graphical influences are seen to have effectively directed their development. The negative influence Of a thin soil and the positive influence Of abundant water power slowly led the people of New England away from general farming and toward manufacturing. Of course there were other causes. New York's physiography was, Of all the eastern states, most fav orable to the building Of a canal which should connect the At lantic Ocean and the Great Lakes, and the building of the Erie Canal turned the commerce Of half the nation through that state. Manufacturing in Pennsylvania has been Wonderfully stimulated by the state's mineral wealth. New Jersey, one of the smallest states, ranks among the first five In manufacturing, due very largely to an exceptionally favorable position. SO it is that water power in New England, physiography in New York, minerals in Pennsylvania, and situation in the case of New Jersey, have exerted a directing influence upon the de velopment Of these states. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pupil's Workbook in the Geography of Wisconsin: The Project Problem Method Interest versus Memory Facts. Experience has proved that attempts to make boys and girls remem ber facts in which they are not interested are failures. Even when reenforced by interest the normal-minded child will not remember any considerable number of the thousands of facts presented in the ordinary textbook study of geography. Some few things the pupil must learn and must not forget, but barring these fundamentals, it is more worth while to learn how to get required information than to attempt to overburden the memory with facts. Problem Study. The generally accepted modern idea of the correct procedure in the classroom study of geography is to base the study upon some problem which presents an appeal to the interest of the learner. This interest may be aroused through dealing with facts connected with the daily activities of people. The ultimate purpose of a large part of such study is to impress the plastic, unfolding mind of youth with the solidarity and interdependence of the human race. This is human geography. State Geography. It means much for the boys and girls in the schoolrooms of Wisconsin today to become acquainted to a considerable extent with the human geography of their state. Such knowledge is superficial and in the main valueless if it be acquired through the committing to memory of the unrelated facts in the ordinary state geography supplement. That knowledge is most worth while which is gained by the learner's own effort. It is believed that the problem material presented in this book, worked out by the pupils under the inspiration and guidance of the teacher, will go far toward making the boys and girls independent students of geography.
