Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of the phonological structure of modern Turkish within the framework of recent linguistic models. While phenomena at both the segmental and suprasegmental levels are discussed, the emphasis is on the latter, with analysis of phonological processes that extend over a number of different domains. Lower-level prosodic constituents, including syllables, feet, and prosodic words, are incorporated into a general theory alongside higher-level constituents - the phonological phrase and the intonational phrase - on the assumption that phonological structure is hierarchical in nature and that phonological representations consist of more than a single linear sequence of segments. The approach employed here draws on theories of both representation - Prosodic Phonology and Autosegmental Phonology - and computation, in the form of Optimality Theory. An overarching theme that emerges in every chapter is that not only regular but also apparently “exceptional” phonological forms demonstrate a systematic pattern, and that both can be captured by the same grammar. The volume provides a critical synthesis of research in Turkish phonology, as well as offering new analyses and data from a theoretically-oriented perspective.

This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the Turkish Linguistic Landscape provides in-depth analyses of different aspects of Turkish in the domains of phonology, morphology and syntax, discourse and language acquisition relevant to recent theoretical discussions. While some of the papers in the volume offer new analyses to known linguistic puzzles, others raise new questions which have not been addressed in the literature before. This collection of original articles written by colleagues and students of Prof. Eser Erguvanlı-Taylan, honoring her contribution to the field of linguistics, features articles on vowel reduction, consonant clusters, negation, conditionals, voice morphology, evidentiality, acquisition of irregular morphology, complementation and subordination in varieties of Turkish. It will be of interest to a wide audience ranging from theoreticians to typologists and is expected to generate further research on Turkish, as well as to contribute to the cross-linguistic literature on the issues addressed in the volume.

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition of Turkish written by Ayşe Gürel and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the findings of current studies on the second language (L2) acquisition of Turkish, an Altaic language with more than 140 million native speakers around the world. There is now a growing interest in learning and teaching Turkish as an L2, both in and outside Turkey. Coordinated efforts to produce theoretical and empirical work on the acquisition and teaching of L2 Turkish are therefore an urgent need. The compilation in this volume offers eleven L2 studies that explore the representation and/or processing of various linguistic properties in different domains of grammar (phonology, morpho-syntax, pragmatics) and their interfaces. All studies involve adult L2 Turkish learners with various first-language backgrounds at different proficiency levels. With extensive discussions on theoretical and pedagogical issues, this title will appeal to an international readership that includes L2 Turkish researchers, materials designers, and teachers.
Book Synopsis Formational Units in Sign Languages by : Rachel Channon
Download or read book Formational Units in Sign Languages written by Rachel Channon and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sign languages and spoken languages have an equal capacity to communicate our thoughts. Beyond this, however, while there are many similarities, there are also fascinating differences, caused primarily by the reaction of the human mind to different modalities, but also by some important social differences. The articulators are more visible and use larger muscles with consequent greater effort. It is difficult to visually attend to both a sign and an object at the same time. Iconicity is more systematic and more available in signs. The body, especially the face, plays a much larger role in sign. Sign languages are more frequently born anew as small groups of deaf people come together in villages or schools. Sign languages often borrow from the written form of the surrounding spoken language, producing fingerspelling alphabets, character signs, and related signs. This book examines the effects of these and other differences using observation, experimentation and theory. The languages examined include Asian, Middle Eastern, European and American sign languages, and language situations include home signers and small village signers, children, gesturers, adult signers, and non-native signers.

Book Synopsis A Description of Turkish-English Phonology for Teaching English in Turkey by : Mehmet Celik
Download or read book A Description of Turkish-English Phonology for Teaching English in Turkey written by Mehmet Celik and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of English as an international language has resulted inevitably in a blending of English and the first languages of the users. One particular consequence of this contact has been the creation of a system involving the phonemic features of the two languages, one such variety being Turkish-English phonology. The objective of this article is to provide Turkish teachers of English with a description of realistic and at the same time intelligible pronunciation for teaching and testing purposes. For this purpose, data from bilinguals and teacher trainers as well as advanced learners of English have been utilized. In view of the strong arguments in the literature that it is unrealistic to expect learners to accomplish native speaker norms in pronunciation, what is needed, methodologically, is an approach or framework that recognizes the learner's linguistic background as well as the contexts that involve nonnative-nonnative discourse participants. The suggested framework involves a reduced but intelligible phonological system for language learners to successfully communicate in English internationally. The paper concludes the description of Turkish- English phonology by reducing the number of phonemes by 8 from a studied total of 23 phonemes from Received Pronunciation. Teachers of pronunciation can make use of the suggested pronunciation framework for effective, viable and realistic teaching targets. List of Words Used in Reading Task is appended. (Contains 11 tables and 3 footnotes.) [Abstract provided in both English and Turkish. This article is a revised version of the paper titled "Bilingual Phonology as a Basis for Teaching Pronunciation" presented at the International ELT Research Conference (4th, Canakkale, Turkey, May 26-28, 2005).].

This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Acquisition of Turkish in Childhood presents recent research on the nature of language acquisition by typically and atypically developing monolingual and bilingual Turkish-speaking children. The book summarises the most recent research findings on the acquisition of Turkish in childhood, with a focus on (i) the acquisition of phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, (ii) the acquisition of discourse skills, (iii) literacy development and (iv) atypical vs. typical development. The book also provides the reader with a unique perspective on cross-learner comparative research on the acquisition of Turkish, demonstrating how similar issues can be investigated in a range of various acquisition contexts. By grouping together the recent research on the acquisition of Turkish within a single volume, this book provides a unique opportunity for readers to review the general developmental tendencies and the most prominent hypotheses put forward by scholars.
