Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both in the sheer breadth and in the detail of their coverage the essays in these two volumes challenge hegemonic thinking on the subject of translation. Engaging throughout with issues of representation in a postmodern and postcolonial world, Translating Others investigates the complex processes of projection, recognition, displacement and 'othering' effected not only by translation practices but also by translation studies as developed in the West. At the same time, the volumes document the increasing awareness the the world is peopled by others who also translate, often in ways radically different from and hitherto largely ignored by the modes of translating conceptualized in Western discourses. The languages covered in individual contributions include Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Rajasthani, Somali, Swahili, Tamil, Tibetan and Turkish as well as the Europhone literatures of Africa, the tongues of medieval Europe, and some major languages of Egypt's five thousand year history. Neighbouring disciplines invoked include anthropology, semiotics, museum and folklore studies, librarianship and the history of writing systems. Contributors to Volume 1: Doris Bachmann-Medick, Cosima Bruno, Ovidi Carbonell, Martha Cheung, G. Gopinathan, Eva Hung, Alexandra Lianeri, Carol Maier, Christi Ann Marrill, Paolo Rambelli, Myriam Salama-Carr, Ubaldo Stecconi and Maria Tymoczko.

Book excerpt: A study of Sri Aurobindo's "Savitri" in the light of the Bhagavad Gita which was awarded the doctorate in English by the University of Calicut in 1996 is being now published on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo. The thesis was an attempt to establish the intimations of intimacy between Sri Aurobindo's epic poem "Savitri" and the Bhagavad Gita. The influence of the Gita on Sri Aurobindo is well known starting with his vision of Krishna at the Alipore jail and by his own statement that he was not only able to understand intellectually but also realize what Sri Krishna demanded of Arjuna. The cardinal teaching of Gita, "Vasudeva Sarvam iti" provided for him the bedrock of his philosophy in "Savitri". The spiritual revolution he envisioned in "Savitri" is that the universe is a manifestation of consciousness occurring in an integral process. Modern quantum physics is bearing many similarities with his ideas. Thus while "Savitri" is a symbol of struggle, redemption, and the incarnation of a divine mother who restores the Golden age, the Bhagavad Gita teaches the same call to the eternal avatar in each being and to the establishment of Sat-Chit-Ananda on the terrestrial plane.

Both the unsurpassed titles bear divine messages but for those who could read them. But his stage-worthy plays teach his philosophical ideas through entertainments. Perhaps he wrote the plays to teach integral philosophy of life to all beings. Present work entitled Poetic Plays of Sri Aurobindo is an exhaustive study of his five blank verse drama maintaining the essential elements of drama and dramaturgy from Oriental to Occidental. In his plays, we could enjoy the dramatic art of Shakespeare and Shaw, Bhasa and Kalidasa. Sri Aurobindo was the deliverer of the whole human life and hence, this book enlightens - - how to deliberate one's own self along with the all. - how to bring hormony in individual, social, national and universal life. - how to attain Universal brotherhood by revealing oneness with all other beings. - how to build children's characters, so that, they can live a manly life, reveal universal friendship and enjoy a life divine on earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having applied the standards of modern critical theory, it may sound fruitless to account for biographical details of writer in interpreting his work as the biographical details either hold no importance or have nothing to do with the work of art in the sense that once a work of art is born, it looses its connection with the creator. Moreover, even in the moment of creation, the author remains detached from his creation. However, there are some exceptions to this. It has been observed that the biographical details are of immense help in partly making sense of what the concerned author has encoded. These details can be correlated to his writing. In the case of some writers, their life has a special relation with what they write, how they led their life, what inspiration they sought, what influences they received and imbibed in their personality, what experiences they lived with, and what events and occasions they confronted. All these partly go into the making of a literary personality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mystical experience, no matter what else, is a subjective occurrence in the psyche. However, when it appears in the psychoanalytic consulting room, its origin, content, and meaning are unknowable. Yet it is there in the room, and it must be addressed. It is not a minor illusion but rather one that requires attention as its occurrence may lead to a profound alteration of consciousness and, as Carl Jung suggests, a cure for neurosis. Leslie Stein interviewed twenty-nine mystics in order to understand the origin, progression, phasing, emotions, and individual variations of a mystical experience in order to make sense of how it should be addressed, the appropriate analytic attitude in the face of a mystery, the way to work with its content, and its psychological meaning. In doing so, he uncovered that there may be specific development markers that create a proclivity to be receptive to such an experience that has clinical significance for psychoanalysis.
