Book excerpt: "The problem of the relation between mind and brain has been among the most persistent in modern Western thought, one that even recent advances in neuroscience haven't been able to put to rest. Historian Larry McGrath's Making Spirit Matter is about how a particularly productive and influential generation of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French thinkers attempted to answer this puzzle by showing the mutual dependence of spirit and matter. The veritable revolution taking place across disciplines, from philosophy to psychology, located our spiritual powers in the brain and offered a radical reformulation of the meaning of science, spirit, and the self. Pulling out connections between thinkers such as Bergson, Blondel, and FouilleáI p1 se, among others, McGrath plots the intellectual movements that brought back to life themes of agency, time, and experience by putting into action the very sciences that seemed to undermine metaphysics and theology. In so doing, Making Spirit Matter lays bare the long legacy of this moment in the history of ideas and how it might renew our understanding of the relationship between mind and brain"--

Book Synopsis God and Other Spirits by : Phillip H. Wiebe
Download or read book God and Other Spirits written by Phillip H. Wiebe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people believe in angels and evil spirits, and popular culture abounds in talk about encounters with such entities. Yet the question of the existence of such spirits is ignored in the academy. Even the Christian Church, which one might expect to show keen interest in transcendent realities, does not appear to be paying much attention. In this book Phillip Wiebe defends the plausibility of the traditional Christian claim that spirits are real. Wiebe examines descriptions of encounters with both good and evil transcendent beings in biblical times and in later Christian history, along with recent accounts of similar experiences. He argues that invisible beings can be postulated to explain events just as unobservable objects are postulated in many scientific theories. Beyond supporting claims for the existence of lesser spirits such as demons and angels, this empirical approach yields important results for assessing common arguments surrounding the existence of God - a question that has become artificially separated from the question of spirits as such. Grounding his argument in a wide range of phenomena - from near death experiences to demonic possession - Wiebe offers a sophisticated case for belief in God on philosophical and epistemological grounds.
Book Synopsis Spirit and Matter are dual aspects of One Cause by : Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
Download or read book Spirit and Matter are dual aspects of One Cause written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2020-12-05 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirit & Matter, when in space and time, are dual aspects of One Cause, and mutually convertible. Mind cannot be denigrated as a by-product of brain activity by controversialists, who are part of Büchner’s marionettes and automata. Consciousness may be explained as a peculiar property of matter under some of its conditions. “Facts” exist only in the consciousness of the beholder, and represent no external and independent reality. Panpsychism is that phase of pantheism which regards all matter as saturated with a potential psyche — which alone perceives itself and makes the body a “reality.” Force is a physical existence, and the real substance of matter at the same time. Feelings and thoughts, have neither extension as matter does, nor mechanical division of parts, place, form, or outline.
