Download or read book Paul Ricoeur written by Charles E. Reagan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998-06-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reagan combines different genres to supplement and enhance the central biographical essay. A personal memoir recalls the turbulent student protests of the 1960s and Ricoeur's controversial resignation as head of the faculties at the University of Paris-Nanterre. A penetrating philosophical exposition draws together the essential themes of Ricoeur's philosophical anthropology. And a collection of four substantive interviews offers privileged access to Ricoeur's own remarkably clear explication of his most challenging and stimulating ideas. The result of this innovative mix of genres is a multidimensional and astonishingly perceptive portrait of a seminal philosopher's life and work.
Book Synopsis Paul Ricoeur between Theology and Philosophy by : Boyd Blundell
Download or read book Paul Ricoeur between Theology and Philosophy written by Boyd Blundell and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Ricoeur (1913--2005) remains one of philosophy of religion's most distinctive voices. Ricoeur was a philosopher first, and while his religious reflections are very relevant to theology, Boyd Blundell argues that his philosophy is even more relevant. Using Ricoeur's own philosophical hermeneutics, Blundell shows that there is a way for explicitly Christian theology to maintain both its integrity and overall relevance. He demonstrates how the dominant pattern of detour and return found throughout Ricoeur's work provides a path to understanding the relationship between philosophy and theology. By putting Ricoeur in dialogue with current, fundamental, and longstanding debates about the role of philosophy in theology, Blundell offers a hermeneutically sensitive engagement with Ricoeur's thought from a theological perspective.
Book Synopsis Hermeneutics and Phenomenology in Paul Ricoeur by : Scott Davidson
Download or read book Hermeneutics and Phenomenology in Paul Ricoeur written by Scott Davidson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermeneutics and Phenomenology in Paul Ricoeur: Between Text and Phenomenon calls attention to the dynamic interaction that takes place between hermeneutics and phenomenology in Ricoeur’s thought. It could be said that Ricoeur’s thought is placed under a twofold demand: between the rigor of the text and the requirements of the phenomenon. The rigor of the text calls for fidelity to what the text actually says, while the requirement of the phenomenon is established by the Husserlian call to return “to the things themselves.” These two demands are interwoven insofar as there is a hermeneutic component of the phenomenological attempt to go beyond the surface of things to their deeper meaning, just as there is a phenomenological component of the hermeneutic attempt to establish a critical distance toward the world to which we belong. For this reason, Ricoeur’s thought involves a back and forth movement between the text and the phenomenon. Although this double movement was a theme of many of Ricoeur’s essays in the middle of his career, the essays in this book suggest that hermeneutic phenomenology remains implicit throughout his work. The chapters aim to highlight, in much greater detail, how this back and forth movement between phenomenology and hermeneutics takes place with respect to many important philosophical themes, including the experience of the body, history, language, memory, personal identity, and intersubjectivity.
Book Synopsis A Passion for the Possible by : Brian Treanor
Download or read book A Passion for the Possible written by Brian Treanor and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Ricoeur's entire philosophical project narrates a passion for the possibleexpressed in the hope that in spite of death, closure, and sedimentation, life is opened by superabundance, by how the world gives us much more than is possible. Ricoeur's philosophical anthropology is a phenomenology of human capacity, which gives onto the groundless ground of human being, namely, God. Thus the story of the capable man, beginning with original goodness held captive by a servile will and ending with the possibility of liberation and regeneration of the heart, underpins his passion for the more than possible. The essays in this volume trace the fluid movement between phenomenological and religious descriptions of the capable self that emerges across Ricoeur's oeuvre and establish points of connection for future developments that might draw inspiration from this body of thought.
Book Synopsis Philosophical Anthropology by : Paul Ricoeur
Download or read book Philosophical Anthropology written by Paul Ricoeur and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do human beings become human? This question lies behind the so-called human sciences. But these disciplines are scattered among many different departments and hold up a cracked mirror to humankind. This is why, in the view of Paul Ricoeur, we need to develop a philosophical anthropology, one that has a much older history but still offers many untapped resources. This appeal to a specifically philosophical approach to questions regarding what it was to be human did not stop Ricoeur from entering into dialogue with other disciplines and approaches, such as psychoanalysis, history, sociology, anthropology, linguistics and the philosophy of language, in order to offer an up-to-date reflection on what he saw as the fundamental issues. For there is clearly not a simple, single answer to the question what is it to be human? Ricoeur therefore takes up the complexity of this question in terms of the tensions he sees between the voluntary and the involuntary, acting and suffering, autonomy and vulnerability, capacity and fragility, and identity and otherness. The texts brought together in this volume provide an overall view of the development of Ricoeurs philosophical thinking on the question of what it is to be human, from his early 1939 lecture on Attention to his remarks on receiving the Kluge Prize in 2004, a few months before his death.
Book Synopsis Interpretation Theory by : Paul Ricoeur
Download or read book Interpretation Theory written by Paul Ricoeur and published by TCU Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four essays that make up this volume are based upon and expand the lectures Ricoeur delivered at Texas Christian University, 27-30 November 1973, as their Centennial Lectures. They may be read as separate essays, but they may also be read as step by step approximations of a solution to a single problem, that of understanding language at the level of such productions as poems, narratives and essays, whether literary or philosophical. In other words, the central problem at stake in these four essays is that of works; in particular, that of language as a work.
Download or read book Evil written by Paul Ricoeur and published by Continuum. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does evil come from? How is it that we do evil? This book falls into three parts. The fi rst part deals with the magnitude and complexity of the problem of evil from a phenomenological perspective. The second part investigates the levels of speculation on the origin and nature of evil. The third discusses thinking, acting and feeling in connection with evil. The discussion runs in the classic intellectual tradition from Augustine, through Hegel, Leibnitz, Kant, and Nietzsche. But the voice is always that of Paul Ricoeur himself, though he also refers to modern writers like Harold Kushner (When Bad Things Happen to Good People) and John K. Roth (Encountering Evil). Ricoeur considers here man's vulnerability to evil with depth and matchless sensitivity.

Book Synopsis Freedom and Nature by : Paul Ricoeur
Download or read book Freedom and Nature written by Paul Ricoeur and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1966 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the first part of Paul Ricoeur's Philosophy of the Will, is an eidetics, carried out within carefully imposed phenomenological brackets. It seeks to deal with the essential structure of man's being in the world, and so it suspends the distorting dimensions of existence, the bondage of passion, and the vision of innocence, to which Ricoeur returns in his later writings. The result is a conception of man as an incarnate Cogito, which can make the polar unity of subject and object intelligible and provide a basic continuity for the various aspects of inquiry into man's being-in-the-world.
Book Synopsis Ricoeur and Theology by : Dan R. Stiver
Download or read book Ricoeur and Theology written by Dan R. Stiver and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) has been heralded as one of the most notable philosophers of the twentieth century. Like a stone skipping across the philosophical pond, he would write a major work in one field, then move on to another. As a consequence, he is among the most inter-disciplinarian of philosophers whose work not only explores such areas as existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics, structuralism, psychoanalysis, metaphor, narrative, and political ethics; it also bridges the gulf between Continental and Anglo-American philosophy. Despite this diversity, one can identify continuous threads running through Ricoeur's work that make him a major representative of hermeneutical philosophy, developing it much further in a critical direction. One of the areas to which he contributed greatly, almost in passing, was the philosophy of religion, where he made notable contributions in the areas of symbol, metaphor and epistemology. Ricoeur's work has been appropriated in theology, but often in an indirect way. This book will help the reader grasp the breadth of a complex philosopher, indicating the increasing relevance and appropriation of Ricoeur's work in theology.

Book Synopsis Living Up to Death by : Paul Ricoeur
Download or read book Living Up to Death written by Paul Ricoeur and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When French philosopher Paul Ricoeur died in 2005, he bequeathed to the world a highly regarded, widely influential body of work which established him as one of the greatest thinkers of our time. He also left behind a number of unfinished projects that are gathered here and translated into English for the first time. Living Up to Death consists of one major essay and nine fragments. Composed in 1996, the essay is the kernel of an unrealized book on the subject of mortality. Likely inspired by his wife’s approaching death, it examines not one’s own passing but one’s experience of others dying. Ricoeur notes that when thinking about death the imagination is paramount, since we cannot truly experience our own passing. But those we leave behind do, and Ricoeur posits that the idea of life after death originated in the awareness of our own end posthumously resonating with our survivors. The fragments in this volume were written over the course of the last few months of Ricoeur’s life as his health failed, and they represent his very last work. They cover a range of topics, touching on biblical scholarship, the philosophy of language, and the idea of selfhood he first addressed in Oneself as Another. And while they contain numerous philosophical insights, these fragments are perhaps most significant for providing an invaluable look at Ricoeur’s mind at work. As poignant as it is perceptive, Living Up to Death is a moving testimony to Ricoeur’s willingness to confront his own mortality with serious questions, a touching insouciance, and hope for the future.
