Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Accounts It is now a dozen years since Colonel Sprague issued his first edition of "The Philosophy of Accounts," and a number of years since death terminated his career of unusual activity and achievement. As the years pass by the truly fundamental nature of his teaching and writing along lines of accounting and investment becomes more clear. In the subject of accounting particularly, which has developed with giant strides in that interval, it is surprising how accurately his logical mind outlined fundamental points of theory accepted as common enough now, but hardly more than mathematical generalizations when they were advanced by him. It has been well said that Sprague stands as the first American writer on the subject of modem accounting theory. Colonel Sprague's work on "The Philosophy of Accounts," therefore, stands today as a classic of American accounting literature. Even in its fragmentary form of a twenty-one chapter discussion with two short monographs on the Cash account and the Merchandise account, it presents a most remarkable and complete piece of consistent logical reasoning. Other writers have elaborated the principles so clearly set forth by Colonel Sprague, and the development of technique has moved far beyond anything that was thought of in the days when "The Philosophy of Accounts" was written. Nevertheless, the principles will stand as he set them forth, and every accountant whose professional training is complete is supposed to have read this work in its original form. For these reasons the publishers are bringing out this edition of "The Philosophy of Accounts." Preceding the text of the discussion are four short tributes from men who knew Colonel Sprague well when he was still actively engaged in educational work. Following this is the discussion proper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces pragmatic constructivism as a paradigm for understanding actors’ construction of functioning practice and for developing methods and concepts for managing and observing that practice. The book explores, understands and theorises organisational practices as constructed through the activities of all organisational actors. Actors always act under presumptions of a specific actor-world-relation which they continuously construct, adjust and reconstruct in light of new experiences, contexts and communication. The outcome of the actor-world-relation is a reality construction. The reality construction may function successfully or it may be hampered by fictitious and illusionary elements, due to missing or faulty actor-world relations. The thesis is that four dimensions of reality – facts, possibilities, values and communication – must be integrated in the actor-world-relation if the construct is to form a successful basis for effective, functioning actions. Drawing on pragmatic constructivism, the book provides concepts and ideas for studies regarding actors and their use of management accounting models in their construction of organized reality. It concentrates on researching and conceptualizing what creates functioning reality construction. It develops concept and methods for understanding, analysing and managing the actors’ reality constructions. It is intended for people who do research on or work actively with developing management accounting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the 2008 financial crisis as his jumping off point, Alex Pollock deftly illustrates how private firms and governments alike have failed to understand the shifting risks that financial systems create. With candor, clarity, and wit, he uncovers the persistent uncertainties inherent in banking, central banking, and economics. “At the height of the 2008 financial panic, Queen Elizabeth plaintively asked why nobody saw it coming. In the winning pages of Finance and Philosophy, Her Majesty can find the answer. With a lightness of touch that belies the complexity of his subject, Alex Pollock shows why the financial future is now, why it has been and always must be a closed book. A successful banker and gifted writer, Pollock tells us all we need to know about money and banking, risk and uncertainty, debt and temptation, and science and economics. He delights as he instructs.”—James Grant, founder and editor, Grant’s Interest Rate Observer “Why can’t human beings take the lessons of boom and bust, bubbles and crashes that are clearly described in history books—and learn from experience? That’s where Mr. Pollock’s wry humor and philosophic bent help understand the hubris that makes every generation believe that not only can it predict the markets, but control them . . . [Finance and Philosophy] should be required reading in economics classes, or before opening an investment account—and by every member of Congress.”—The Washington Times Alex J. Pollock is a distinguished senior fellow at the R Street Institute in Washington, DC. He was a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute from 2004 to 2015, and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago from 1991 to 2004.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy and Neuroscience: A Ruthlessly Reductive Account is the first book-length treatment of philosophical issues and implications in current cellular and molecular neuroscience. John Bickle articulates a philosophical justification for investigating "lower level" neuroscientific research and describes a set of experimental details that have recently yielded the reduction of memory consolidation to the molecular mechanisms of long-term potentiation (LTP). These empirical details suggest answers to recent philosophical disputes over the nature and possibility of psycho-neural scientific reduction, including the multiple realization challenge, mental causation, and relations across explanatory levels. Bickle concludes by examining recent work in cellular neuroscience pertaining to features of conscious experience, including the cellular basis of working memory, the effects of explicit selective attention on single-cell activity in visual cortex, and sensory experiences induced by cortical microstimulation.

Book excerpt: Isn’t That Clever provides a new account of the nature of humor – the cleverness account – according to which humor is intentional conspicuous acts of playful cleverness. This volume asks whether there are limits to what can be said in dealing with a heckler and how do we determine whether one comedian has stolen jokes from another.
