Download or read book The Philippines written by James K. Boyce and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1993-07-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the Philippine economy from the 1960s to the 1980s. During this period, the benefits of economic growth conspicuously failed to "trickle down". Despite rising per capita income, broad sectors of the Filipino population experienced deepening poverty. Professor Boyce traces this outcome to the country's economic and political structure and focuses on three elements of the government's development strategy: the "green revolution" in rice agriculture, the primacy accorded to export agriculture and forestry, and massive external borrowing. James Boyce is the author of "Agrarian Impasse in Bengal" and co-author of "A Quiet Violence: View from a Bangladesh Village".

Book Synopsis Poverty in the Philippines by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Poverty in the Philippines written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of the global financial crisis and rising food, fuel, and commodity prices, addressing poverty and inequality in the Philippines remains a challenge. The proportion of households living below the official poverty line has declined slowly and unevenly in the past four decades, and poverty reduction has been much slower than in neighboring countries such as the People's Republic of China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Economic growth has gone through boom and bust cycles, and recent episodes of moderate economic expansion have had limited impact on the poor. Great inequality across income brackets, regions, and sectors, as well as unmanaged population growth, are considered some of the key factors constraining poverty reduction efforts. This publication analyzes the causes of poverty and recommends ways to accelerate poverty reduction and achieve more inclusive growth. it also provides an overview of current government responses, strategies, and achievements in the fight against poverty and identifies and prioritizes future needs and interventions. The analysis is based on current literature and the latest available data, including the 2006 Family Income and Expenditure Survey.
Book Synopsis The Matrix of Policy in the Philippines by : Harvey A. Averch
Download or read book The Matrix of Policy in the Philippines written by Harvey A. Averch and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevailing view of the state of Philippine society is bleak: the Philippines, it is alleged, is suffering from unsatisfactory economic growth, mounting corruption, increasing lawlessness, and declining morale. To arrive at an accurate assessment of current problems and future prospects, the authors have undertaken a broad, quantitative analysis of politics, economics, crime, and dissidence within the country. Addressing the problems systematically, measuring alternative explanations and interpretations, their analysis is directed to a clearer articulation of information and policy decisions within the Philippines, and a more realistic view of the country. For the benefit of other social scientists or countries who wish to make a similar study, the appendices list in detail the data used by the authors. Originally published in 1971. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Philippine Cinema and the Cultural Economy of Distribution by : Michael Kho Lim
Download or read book Philippine Cinema and the Cultural Economy of Distribution written by Michael Kho Lim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the complex interplay of culture and economics in the context of Philippine cinema. It delves into the tension, interaction, and shifting movements between mainstream and independent filmmaking, examines the film distribution and exhibition systems, and investigates how existing business practices affect the sustainability of the independent sector. This book addresses the lack or absence of Asian representation in film distribution literature by supplying the much-needed Asian context and case study. It also advances the discourse of film distribution economy by expounding on the formal and semi-formal film distribution practices in a developing Asian country like the Philippines, where the thriving piracy culture is considered as ‘normal,’ and which is commonly depicted and discussed in existing literature. As such, this will be the first book that looks into the specifics of the Philippine film distribution and exhibition system and provides a historical grounding of its practices.
