What seemed like the bet of a lifetime, has now turned into a true major league nightmare. A fifty-thousand by Monday or Tony and his friends will be floating in the East River kind of nightmare. Sitting across from Don Luciano, Little's Italy's mob boss, Tony and his friends Ralphie and Louie know they're in a nasty bind, and there is only one thing to do... Get the hell outof town! Welcome to Ken-"Friggin"-Tucky!!! Hiding from Don Luciano in Kentucky, Tony and the boys are like ducks out of water when it comes to the "down home living" on a farm. Finally banished to the field to plant corn, which of course they screw up, the guys are home sick and nearly broke when their tired, weary heads hit the pillows. KA-BOOM! Jumping out of bed, the fellas are scared to death. Thinking that Don Luciano has finally found them, they soon realize that something has crashed in the corn field. Running outside, Tony and the boys race through the dark field towards the smoldering hole. Their jaws hit the ground when they see a Time Machine resting at the bottom of the huge pit. Covering the time machine with hay, the boys come up with an idea to solve all their problems. With the sweet dreams of giant cannolis, the boys fall asleep unaware that life is about to deal them a bum hand. Later that night on a road near the farm... Getting out of the car appears down on his luck rapper T-Bone. T-Bone knows the old Ford has crashed and isn't going another mile. Looking for a place to sleep T-Bone spots the barn. BINGO! T-Bone knows he's hit the jack pot when he uncovers the Time Machine. WHAM! Joey, Ralphie and Tony are on T-Bone quicker than Fat Frank from Bensonhurst is on a sausage. Tony, Joey, Ralphie and T-Bone, And a whirl, bang and lots of smoke, fly back in time! In no time, the boys are standing in front of the one and only Julius Caesar. Meanwhile, unknown to Caesar and the boys, Brutus and his crew of stone cold killers have had the Time Machine hauled to the floor of the Senate. It also doesn't take long for Tony and the fellas and T-Bone to form an alliance to help Caesar defeat Brutus and the goons from the Senate. With cheering crowds, Tony and the boys with T-Bone are the new hero's of Rome. The guys are all smiles, with Tony and everyone jump into the time machine and haul their asses back to the future.

Bonventre is a compelling storyteller. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. It's one hell of a yarn!" -Howard Blum, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Goodnight and Dark Invasion "Let’s see: There’s a religious miracle (maybe) and a headline-grabbing murder (definitely), a psycho gangster with a bizarre dream and a long-lost love who suddenly makes the scene. And that’s not all. Where Have You Gone Without Me? is a Must Read—so what’re you waiting for?" -Maxine Paetro, co-author with James Patterson of No. 1 New York Times Best Sellers In the heart of New York City, newspaper columnist Eddie Sabella stumbles into the biggest story of his life when a statue is stolen from a church. Not just any statue, but one that was reported to have miraculously wept real tears only the day before—an event that made headlines. As Eddie pursues the story behind the theft, he begins unravelling a mystery that leads him to cross paths with a cast of unusual suspects: a respected restauranteur with a secret past, a cantankerous priest with expensive tastes, a legendary hitman, and a still-volatile Mafia soldier hungry for revenge. As Eddie rushes to track down the mastermind behind the statue’s theft, his investigation takes him deeper than he could have ever imagined into murders, mobsters, and head-spinning crimes. But nothing could have prepared him for Phyllis—Eddie’s first love who disappeared without a trace fifteen years before—an enigma in her own right who makes a startling return and upends his personal life. A mystery with non-stop twists and suspense, Where Have You Gone Without Me? is a story of lovers and losers, revenge, and second chances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable book, the author of Shiloh and Other Stories, In Country, and other award-winning books gives us powerful new stories that capture the restless energy of life in contemporary America. The characters here are travelers and seekers, feeling their way toward, or away from the defining moments of their lives. They roam out into the world to England, Alaska, Texas, Saudi Arabia, or ricochet back home to Kentucky, ceaselessly searching, exploring, testing for limits. I felt strange, says Chrissy in With Jazz, as though all my life I had been zigzagging down a wild trail to this particular place. In Charger, a teenage boy races along the interstate, seeking the father who abandoned him years before. In Rolling into Atlanta, a young woman searches for the kind of authenticity she remembers from her rural childhood. In Proper Gypsies, Nancy deals with the shock of being robbed in London. In The Funeral Side, Sandra comes home to try to fulfill her responsibilities to her family, but yearns to escape again to Alaska and the northern lights that haunt her. Writing in the spare, precise, beautifully nuanced language for which she is famous, Bobbie Ann Mason expands her art here in dramatic and illuminating fashion. These fascinating stories bring to life surprising individuals whose journeys shine a bright light on life as it is lived by many Americans today. Zigzagging Down a Wild Trail is a beautiful book by one of America's finest writers, a book full of drama, humor, and startling insights into the timeless longings of the human heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laurie Lewis’s memoir begins with her child’s-eye understanding of a family life based on love, fear and lies. Her frightening father, who believes his children need to be beaten for their own good, is an important man in the Alberta Communist Party; her mother, a committed Party member, tries to protect her children from his alcoholic rages and maintains the pretence that everything is all right. Laurie watches her brother’s anger, her mother’s unhappiness, and learns to keep secrets -- her own and other people’s. For a time she and her brother are sent to live with strangers. They are not told where their parents are, because her father is in hiding from the RCMP (who are looking to arrest Communists). When she is fifteen a new life begins as her mother leaves her marriage and takes Laurie with her to New York City. Laurie now discovers the delights and difficulties of rundown but cheap apartments in Little Italy and Greenwich Village. Her mother finds work as an editor and writer, meeting many left-wing artists, and there are eye-opening experiences with men -- for both mother and daughter. Then at sixteen Laurie spends a summer waiting on tables at a socialist resort, where she finds a serious older boyfriend who is much too bourgeois, according to her politically radical mother. With wit, pathos and blistering emotional honesty Little Comrades tells the story of a girl growing up in two countries in a bewildering time of transition and new freedom for women.

Book excerpt: The Romero Strain had swept across the globe, turning most of its inhabitants into the living dead. However, months after the zombie apocalypse, the living dead have become rotting corpses, and in the aftermath, two mutant species have risentransmutes and half-mutes. Transmutes were spawned from the infected whose DNA contained a mutated receptor gene left over from the days of the black plague, mostly those of Irish ethnicity. Although a transmutes features of an elongated neck, bluish-gray skin, fingers with razor-sharp talons, and large black eyes give them a menacing appearance, they are not as aggressive as the other mutant species. Transmutes are solitary creatures that come out at dark to hunt for food: rodents, dogs, cats, and sometimes humans. Half-mutes were born out of a mutated strain of the original virus. These jaundice-fleshed mutations are day creatures and are attracted by noise. They are monstrous in appearance, highly aggressive, nearly fearless, and hungry for flesh of all kinds: animal, transmute, and human. In New York City, a survivor group led by paramedic J. D. Nichols continues their quest at locating and rescuing the children abducted by the self-proclaimed king of New York, Edward Stone. Stone is a convicted sadistic sexual predator and serial murderer, and he and his group are hell-bent on butchering altruist J. D. and laying claim to the Sixty-Ninth Regiment Armory, where J. D. and his group have found refuge. Nevertheless, killing Stone and rescuing the children isnt the only problem the armory leader has. Armory resources are running low. There are other hostile survivors to contend with, and J. D. is being trailed by a terrifying half-mute with a missing finger. However, the greatest threat to the armory groups survival may be J. D. himself, who is slowly mutating into a transmute. Can J. D. maintain his humanity long enough to save the children and relocate his survivor group to Upstate New York, or will his mutation overtake him, causing him to fail? And exactly why is the half-mute with the missing finger stalking J. D.? The Romero Strain II: The Dead, the Damned, and the Darkness is an intense and gripping postapocalyptic sequel to The Romero Strain.

Book excerpt: An illustrated guide to New York City tailored for the book-obsessed explorer showcasing the city's best bookshops; libraries; homes and haunts of world-famous writers; and scenes from literary classics with charming drawings by the famed New Yorker cover artist Pierre Le-Tan. A Booklover's Guide to New York is a love letter to everything literary in New York City. It is a book all about books. The book is an object in itself, designed as the ultimate little tome any book collector would love to acquire, layered with witty Pierre Le-Tan drawings, as well as photographs of some of the most precious bookish locations. Rediscover New York in the most fashionably literate way: whether you are in need of an exceptionally rare edition of your favorite novel (perhaps to be found in the dark and musty backroom of The Center for Fiction), or the most tranquil place to devour a short story on a wintry day (an empty underground food court in a Midtown skyscraper), or if you are looking to follow in the footsteps of a beloved author or novella character (like Capote's Grady and Clyde in Central Park Zoo), this will be your ultimate companion. Part guide, part sophisticated scrapbook and part desirable object, A Booklover's Guide to New York is an absolute must for any book-savvy person--the young bookworm or old scholar, the visiting tourist or homegrown New Yorker, the aspiring writer or doting parent.
