Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Charles Dickens's life is a truly remarkable rags-to-riches tale. His father's bankruptcy and imprisonment led to Dickens working in a blacking factory at an early age. These humble beginnings were to become a major influence upon his life and his writings. Dickens became a sensation in his own time and his legacy lives on. His books sold in tens of thousands. Audiences flocked to see him when he performed public readings of his works, inciting "Bozmania." Venues became sold out, touts sold tickets at inflated prices, and women fainted at his thrilling recitals. He went on to conquer America and commanded great fees for his performances. This long overdue republication, from 1902, chronologically records the events in the life of the "Inimitable Boz." We discover that he was not just an author but also an actor, publisher, journalist, editor, public reader, art critic, political economist and social reformer. We learn about the characters in his books; who inspired them and uncover something of the personality of Dickens himself. He was a meticulous workaholic with a desire not to be poor again and it was this desire that ultimately killed him. About the author Frederic George Kitton (1856-1904) was born in Norwich, England. At the age of seventeen he moved to London and joined the staff of The Graphic as an apprentice. He became a skilled etcher and contributed to artistic journals before becoming an author. Kitton was one of the founders of the Dickens Fellowship and most of his publications relate to the life and works of Charles Dickens including "Dickensiana: A Bibliography of the Literature Relating to Charles Dickens and His Writings" as well as annotating the "Rochester" edition of "Dickens's Works."

Book excerpt: Our Mutual Friend - explores the conflict between doing what society expects of a person and the idea of being true to oneself The Pickwick Papers - To extend his researches into the quaint and curious phenomena of life, Samuel Pickwick suggests that he and three other "Pickwickians" should make journeys to places remote from London and report on their findings to the other members. Oliver Twist is an orphan who starts his life in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin… A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. David Copperfield is a fatherless boy who is sent to lodge with his housekeeper's family after his mother remarries, but when his mother dies he decides to run away… Hard Times is set in the fictional city of Coketown and it is centered around utilitarian and industrial influences on Victorian society. A Tale of Two Cities depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same period. Great Expectations depicts the personal growth and development of an orphan nicknamed Pip in Kent and London in the early to mid-19th century. Bleak House – legal thriller based on true events. Little Dorrit – criticize the institution of debtors' prisons, the shortcomings of both government and society. COLLECTED LETTERS THE LIFE OF CHARLES DICKENS by John Forster

Book excerpt: There is a long history of interest in ‘strangers’ and ‘strangeness’ in the West. Literature lends itself particularly well to an exploration of the strange in its richly varied forms, having often contained portraits of outsiders. These portraits depict people who are strange in their unusual appearance or demeanour, their out-of-the-ordinary actions or attitudes, their defiance of convention, their marginalisation from society, or their resistance to dominant structures and practices, as well as those who come from strange worlds. Each contribution in this collection focuses on a novel, story or play. The essays engage works by Shelley, Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, Dostoevsky, Conrad, Grazia Deledda, Kafka, Beckett, and Camus, all of whom have much to offer the central theme of ‘strangers and strangeness’. This book demonstrates that there is considerable value in encountering, experiencing and reflecting upon that which is strange. Education is, amongst other things, a process of learning to see the world otherwise, and literature has the capacity to promote this form of human development. This book allows readers to re-experience the ordinary, and to learn that what at first seems strange is rather closer to us than we had previously imagined. This book was originally published as a special issue of Educational Philosophy & Theory.

The novel's full title is The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account). It was first published as a serial in 1849-50, and as a book in 1850.The novel features the character David Copperfield, and is written in the first person, as a description of his life until middle age, with his own adventures and the numerous friends and enemies he meets along his way. It is his journey from being an impoverished, neglected child to a successful author. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens's own life, and it is often considered his veiled autobiography.[2] It was Dickens' favourite among his own novels. In the preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens wrote, "like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is David Copperfield.
