Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Periodontal diseases" is a web-based resource intended to reach the contemporary practitioners as well as educators and students in the field of periodontology. It is fully searchable and designed to enhance the learning experience. Within the book a description is presented of the current concepts presenting the complex interactions of microbial fingerprint, multiple genotypes, and host modulations. In addition, an overview is given of the clinical outcome of the disease's progression, as influenced by the epigenetic factors. Emerging concepts on periodontitis as a risk factor for various systemic diseases and as a bilateral modulating factor have been elucidated in detail as well.

Download or read book Periodontitis written by Anders Johansson and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontitis is an infection-induced inflammatory disease accounting for huge healthcare costs and socio-economic impacts. Bacteria from the indigenous oral flora colonize the interspace between the tooth and the connective tissue, which induces an inflammatory response. If the bacteria proliferate and release virulence factors, they cause an imbalance in the host inflammatory response that induces degenerative processes in the surrounding tissues. This process is often slow, and the disease affects mainly older people, but the process could be rapid and affect young individuals if certain pathogens colonize the area. The two most studied periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, express virulence factors, including proteases and exotoxins. Periodontal bacteria and their products can be translocated to the peripheral circulation and are therefore linked to the risk pattern of several systemic diseases. However, it is not known if the increased risk for systemic disease associated with periodontitis is an effect of the invading bacteria and/or their released products, the release of components from the local inflammatory response, or a common host susceptibility pattern. The most studied periodontitis-associated systemic diseases are cardiovascular diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. Here, we want to shed light on mechanisms behind the associations of periodontal infections with systemic inflammation.

Download or read book Periodontal Pathogens written by Keiji Nagano and published by Humana. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the major periodontal pathogens implicated as causal agents in periodontal disease, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and Prevotella spp. Beginning with methods for bacterial genetic manipulation, the volume continues with sections on experimental methods to examine virulence factors, interactions with other pathogenic microorganism and host cells, as well as a chapter on an animal model of periodontitis. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Periodontal Pathogens: Methods and Protocols serves as an extensive and useful reference for researchers studying periodontal pathogens and will help elucidate the causes of periodontal disease and the systemic diseases related to it.
