Book Synopsis The Insider-outsider Theory of Employment and Unemployment by : Assar Lindbeck
Download or read book The Insider-outsider Theory of Employment and Unemployment written by Assar Lindbeck and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an accessible, balanced account of the insider-outsider theory of labor market activity. It focuses on how "insiders" (experienced incumbent employees whose jobs are protected by various labor turnover costs) get market power, what they do with that power, and how their activities affect the "outsiders" (who are either unemployed or work in the informal sector). The book examines the effect of insiders' activities on wages, employment, and unemployment, discusses the associated policy implications, and relates the insider-outsider theory to other theories of labor market activity. The central part of the book consists of a series of previously published articles that have been edited to convey a single coherent account of a theory of unemployment that is growing in popularity. Chapters are preceded by overviews summarizing the main ideas and relating them to the book's underlying theme. The concluding chapter points out the predictions and policy implications of the theory. Lindbeck and Snower have taken care to make the main ideas accessible to a wide audience, without sacrificing analytical rigor."The insider-Outside Theory of Employment and Unemployment is concerned with both the causes and consequences of insider power. It emphasizes unemployment in chapters that survey modern unemployment theories and provide a formal comparison of the insider-outsider and efficiency-wage explanations of involuntary unemployment. Other topics include labor turnover costs (how they arise from insiders' activities and from job security legislation, and how they give rise to insider power), Union activities (how unions can amplify labor turnover costs, and provide insiders with newtools of rent-creation, such as strikes and work-to-rule actions), and the effect that insider activities can have in perpetuating the effects of temporary macroeconomic shocks. Assar Lindbeck is Professor of International Economics and Director of the Institute of International Economics at the University of Stockholm. Dennis J. Snower is Professor of Economics, Birbeck College, University of London.

Book excerpt: In the six years since the appearance of the first edition of Stephen Smith's book, labour economics has become a more firmly entrenched subject on the curriculum. Previously regarded as a subsection within industrial economics, there are now very few universities that do not devote a course to it in its own right. The focus of topics covered withi
Book Synopsis Financial Disruptions and the Cyclical Upgrading of Labor by : Brendan Epstein

This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid total factor productivity (TFP) shocks job-to-job flows amplify the volatility of unemployment, but the aggregate implications of job-to-job flows amid financial shocks are less understood. To develop such understanding we model a general equilibrium labor-search framework that incorporates on-the-job (OTJ) search and distinctly accounts for the differential impact of TFP and financial shocks. Surprisingly, we find that the interaction of OTJ search with financial shocks is sufficiently different from its interaction with TFP shocks so that, under standard calibrations, our model generates aggregate dynamics exceedingly in line with the behavior of key U.S. macro data across several decades and in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis as well. Importantly, as in the data, the model yields relatively high volatilities of consumption, labor income, and unemployment. As such, our work contributes to resolving two limitations of current general equilibrium labor-search theory: under standard calibrations models without OTJ search generate implausibly low unemployment volatility, while models with OTJ search generate unemployment volatility closer to the data but at the expense of implausibly low consumption and labor-income volatility.
Book Synopsis Wages, Regime Switching, and Cycles by : Piero Ferri
Download or read book Wages, Regime Switching, and Cycles written by Piero Ferri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial purposes of this book were to update and extend the discussion and the results presented ill our previous book, The Labor Market and Business Cycle Theories. Our 1990 article, which appeared in The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, represented a first step in this direction. The consequences of this effort have materialized in a number of new chapters that has led de facto to a new book, in which the surviving parts have been largely revised. The 1989 book was too mathematically oriented for many Keynesians and post Keynesians to be fully appreciated and insufficiently microfounded for both new classicals and new-Keynesians to be warmly accepted, yet we received positive and encouraging comments, and it was sold out very quickly. It was an attempt to dis cuss dynamics in Keynesian terms, based on a double assumption that maintains its validity-that both economic facts and analytical and methodological innova tions had contributed to a renewed interest in business cycles, which over time has had its "ups and downs." Since then, many more articles and books have appeared, stressing in particular the role of microfoundations and of nonlinearities in shaping business cycle theory.
Book Synopsis Globalization and Unemployment by : Helmut M. Wagner

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and unemployment are two phenomena which are amongst the most widely discussed subjects in the economic debate today. Often, globalization is regarded as being responsible for the increase in unemployment, particularly in unskilled labor. This book deals with the correlation between globalization and unemployment under various aspects: historical aspects of globalization, empirical trends and theoretical explanations of unemployment, effects of globalization in general and of European Monetary Union in particular on umemployment, labor market policy in a global economy, the impact of fiscal policy on unemployment in a global economy, as well as the effects of globalization on inflation and national stabilization policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deep recession and slow recovery of the Canadian economy in the 1980s and the lengthy recession of the early 1990s raised serious questions about economic policy making. The steady worsening of Canadian unemployment rates led some economists to doubt the traditional view that the national economy is by nature self-correcting and to endorse the concept of hysteresis - the idea that the unemployment rate may display no tendency to return to an unchanging natural rate. Such hysteresis would have important and far-reaching implications for economic policy, particularly monetary policy. Jones provides an overview of leading theories of hysteresis and examines international and Canadian evidence from both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives. He extends the econometric analysis of hysteresis at both the micro and macro levels and concludes that while there is some evidence of dependence in Canada, the overall picture is not one of hysteresis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, economic growth and business cycles have been treated independently. However, the dependence of GDP levels on its history of shocks, what economists refer to as “hysteresis,” argues for unifying the analysis of growth and cycles. In this paper, we review the recent empirical and theoretical literature that motivate this paradigm shift. The renewed interest in hysteresis has been sparked by the persistence of the Global Financial Crisis and fears of a slow recovery from the Covid-19 crisis. The findings of the recent literature have far-reaching conceptual and policy implications. In recessions, monetary and fiscal policies need to be more active to avoid the permanent scars of a downturn. And in good times, running a high-pressure economy could have permanent positive effects.

Book Synopsis Optimising Agents, Staggered Wages and Persistence in the Real Effects of Money Shocks by : Guido Ascari
Download or read book Optimising Agents, Staggered Wages and Persistence in the Real Effects of Money Shocks written by Guido Ascari and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we incorporate Taylor's (1979) staggered wage setting into an optimising dynamic general equilibrium framework to study whether staggered wages could induce a high degree of persistence in the real effects of money shocks. We conclude that high persistence is an unlikely outcome. Sensible values of the microeconomic parameters and/or a moderate rate of underlying inflation imply a low degree of persistence. Furthermore, once explicit microfoundations are taken into account, we show that: (i) the model is highly non-linear; (ii) the inertia of the system is inversely related to the level of average inflation.
