This book was released on 2020-03-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating forgotten tales of literary communities across Iran, Afghanistan and South Asia - at a time when Islamic empires were fracturing and new state formations were emerging - this book offers a more global understanding of Persian literary culture in the 18th and 19th centuries. It challenges the manner in which Iranian nationalism has infilitrated Persian literary history writing and recovers the multi-regional breadth and vibrancy of a global lingua franca connecting peoples and places across Islamic Eurasia. Focusing on 3 case studies (18th-century Isfahan, a small court in South India and the literary climate of the Anglo-Afghan war), it reveals the literary and cultural ties that bound this world together as well as some of the trends that broke it apart.
Book Synopsis A Two-Colored Brocade by : Annemarie Schimmel
Download or read book A Two-Colored Brocade written by Annemarie Schimmel and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annemarie Schimmel, one of the world's foremost authorities on Persian literature, provides a comprehensive introduction to the complicated and highly sophisticated system of rhetoric and imagery used by the poets of Iran, Ottoman Turkey, and Muslim India. She shows that these images have been used and refined over the centuries and reflect the changing conditions in the Muslim world. According to Schimmel, Persian poetry does not aim to be spontaneous in spirit or highly personal in form. Instead it is rooted in conventions and rules of prosody, rhymes, and verbal instrumentation. Ideally, every verse should be like a precious stone--perfectly formed and multifaceted--and convey the dynamic relationship between everyday reality and the transcendental. Persian poetry, Schimmel explains, is more similar to medieval European verse than Western poetry as it has been written since the Romantic period. The characteristic verse form is the ghazal--a set of rhyming couplets--which serves as a vehicle for shrouding in conventional tropes the poet's real intentions. Because Persian poetry is neither narrative nor dramatic in its overall form, its strength lies in an "architectonic" design; each precisely expressed image is carefully fitted into a pattern of linked figures of speech. Schimmel shows that at its heart Persian poetry transforms the world into a web of symbols embedded in Islamic culture.
Book Synopsis The Market in Poetry in the Persian World by : Shahzad Bashir
Download or read book The Market in Poetry in the Persian World written by Shahzad Bashir and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Poetic speech is a pearl, connected to the king's ear.' This statement gestures to words as objects of material value sought by those with power and resources. The author provides a sense for the texture of the Persian world by discussing what made poetry precious. By focusing on reports on poets' lives, they illuminate the social scene in which poetry was produced and consumed. The discussion elicits poetry's close connections to political and religious authority, economic exchange, and the articulation of gender. At the broadest level, the study substantiates the interdependency between cultural and material reproduction of society.
Book Synopsis Persian Literary Influence on English Literature by : Hasan Javadi
Download or read book Persian Literary Influence on English Literature written by Hasan Javadi and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hasan Javadi presents a survey of the subject often only briefly mentioned, or entirely disregarded, in many histories of English Literature. Students of that literature know of Edward FitzGerald's Ruba'iyyat or Matthew Arnold's Sohrab and Rustum, but many are unaware of the fascination that the East, including Persia, has exercised over European minds. Though dealing primarily with English literature, Javadi includes in his account some continental European Orientalists of note as well. Beginning in the late Middle Ages when the Bible and the classics were the main sources of information about Persia; the book covers the 16th and 17th centuries, when travel was beginning to increase Western knowledge about the East. There is a detailed account of Persian themes in Romantic poetry and prose, and a discussion of the works of travelers and novelists such as James Morier, whose Hajji Baba of Ispahan is still a popular novel for many Iranians."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Literature of the Early Twentieth Century: From the Constitutional Period to Reza Shah written by A. A. Seyed-Gohrab and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleventh volume in this ground-breaking series pays special attention to politically engaged poetry, written during a turbulent period which saw the Constitutional Revolution in Iran as well as the rise to power of Reza Shah and his attempts to implement reform. Throughout this time, poets began to turn their attention towards the country's ordinary people, rather than concentrate on its elites. This volume also examines the prose fiction of the period, which saw the rise of the novel and short story. Additionally, Persian satire began to grow in importance, especially with the increased popularity of poets and novelists such as Iraj Mirza and Sadeq Hedayat. This wide-ranging volume is an invaluable companion for anyone who wants to understand how the Persian literary scene changed at the beginning of the twentieth century, reflecting the social and political contexts in which this literature was created
