The Hebrew psalms, or their prototypes the canticles of the Akkada, lose little in beauty or majest translated into any language. While form makes a larg part of the beauty of poetry, yet poetry is more than form Homer in prose is more satisfactory than Homer in Englisl hexameters. If the thought and the spirit are preserved the metre of a translation is of comparatively small con sequence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persian Poetry for English Readers: Being Specimens of Six of the Greatest Classical Poets of Persia, Ferdusī, Nizāmī, Sādi, Jelāl-Ad-Dīn Rūmī, Hāfiz, and Jāmī; With Biographical Notices and Notes There is one point upon which I am particularly anxious to be very frank, and to be perfectly under stood by any who may be my readers. I make no claim to be regarded as a Persian scholar, nor do I wish to be so regarded. My knowledge of the language is very imperfect. The only claim I make is this: that I have done my work - such as it is laboriously and conscientiously. To repair my own defects I have sought assistance wherever I could find it. I could have done nothing satisfactory to myself without such aid. I have diligently compared my own translations, line by line and word by word, with the best texts which I could obtain, and with such translations as existed in English, French, and German. I trust, therefore, that, as regards the sense of the Persian originals, I am not greatly in error. As to the English garb in which I have clothed them, my readers must judge of that. It is very much on the score of my want of a scholarly mastery of the language (though combined with other causes) that, as stated above, I have had so much doubt and hesitation about reprinting my work, and I should not improbably have continued to doubt and hesitate, and finally abandon the idea altogether. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In the breath that I die, for you I'll be longing/ Wishing to turn into the dust of your belonging' - Sa'di, Expressions of Love. With poetry which speaks across the ages, Sa'di (1210-1281) is a vital classical poet and a towering figure of the medieval Persian canon. Comparable in skill and stature to other Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez, Rumi and Omar Khayyam, Sa'di's verses--best known through his 'Bustan' and 'Golestan' address universal themes of passion, love and the human condition in works which are both psychologically perceptive and beautifully crafted. His mystical writings, contemporaneous with Rumi, reveal a degree of depth, wisdom and insight which have placed Sa'di in the pantheon of world literature. In this essential new translation of Sa'di's work, leading expert on Iranian studies Homa Katouzian seeks to bring the poet's lyrics to a new readership. The book provides the Persian text and Katouzian's English translation side-by-side, creating an indispensible tool for students and enthusiasts of Iranian history, literature and culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia: Translated Into English Verse His Takhallus or poetical name (khayyfim) signifies a Tent-maker, and he is said to have at one time exercised that trade, perhaps before N iaem-ul-mulk's generosity raised him to independence. Many Persian poets similarly derive their names from their occupations; thus we have Attsr, a druggist. Assar, an Oil presser, &c. (though all those, like our Smiths, Archers, Millers, Fletcher's, rte. May simply retain the Sirname Of an hereditary calling.) Omar him self alludes to his name in the following whimsical lines. Book excerpt: The romantic lyricism of the great Persian poet Hafiz (1315-1390) continues to be admired around the world. Recent exploration of that lyricism by Iranian scholars has revealed that, in addition to his masterful use of poetic devices, Hafiz's verse is deeply steeped in the philosophy and symbolism of Persian love mysticism. This innovative volume discusses the aesthetic theories and mystical philosophy of the classical Persian love-lyric (ghazal) as particularly exemplified by Hafiz (who, along with Rumi and Sa'di, is Persia's most celebrated poet). For the first time in western literature, Hafiz's rhetoric of romance is situated within the broader context of what scholars refer to as 'Love Theory' in Arabic and Persian poetry in particular and Islamic literature more generally. Contributors from both the West and Iran conduct a major investigation of the love lyrics of Hafiz and of what they signified to that high culture and civilization which was devoted to the School of Love in medieval Persia. The volume will have strong appeal to scholars of the Middle East, medieval Islamic literature, and the history and culture of Iran.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterpiece of Persian Classical epic, the Shahnama or Book of Kings was composed by Abu'l-Qasem Ferdowsi at the beginning of the eleventh century. Because the Shahnama presents itself as a chronicle of the reigns of the shahs from the primordial founders to the Sasanian dynasty which ended in 651, scholarly attention has centered on the question of its historical accuracy. Addressing the literary as well as the historical and mythological aspects of the Shahnama, Olga M. Davidson makes this centerpiece of Iranian culture accessible to Western readers. Drawing on recent work in epic studies and oral poetics, Davidson considers analogies with Classical and medieval European narratives as she investigates the poem's social contexts. Her interpretation of the Shahnama focuses on both the figure of the poet himself and on his protagonists-the superhuman hero Rostam and the historical or historicized shahs. Exploring the Shahnama as an example of court poetry designed to glorify the idea of empire, Davidson identifies as a driving force of Ferdowsi's narrative a strong current of antagonism between king and hero. Ironically, she shows, it is the epic hero himself who poses the greatest threat to the concept of kingship that he is sworn to defend. Poet and Hero in the Persian Book of Kings will be welcomed by readers working in such fields as comparative literature, Middle Eastern Studies, folklore, literary theory, and comparative religion.

This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the very first Persian poets was a woman (Rabe’eh, who lived over a thousand years ago) and there have been women poets writing in Persian in virtually every generation since that time until the present. Before the twentieth century they tended to come from society’s social extremes. Many were princesses, a good number were hired entertainers of one kind or another, and they were active in many different countries – Iran of course, but also India, Afghanistan, and areas of central Asia that are now Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. Not surprisingly, a lot of their poetry sounds like that of their male counterparts, but a lot doesn’t; there are distinctively bawdy and flirtatious poems by medieval women poets, poems from virtually every era in which the poet complains about her husband (sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes with poignant seriousness), touching poems on the death of a child, and many epigrams centered on little details that bring a life from hundreds of years ago vividly before our eyes. This new bilingual edition of The Mirror of My Heart – the poems in Persian and English on facing pages – is a unique and captivating collection introduced and translated by Dick Davis, an acclaimed scholar and translator of Persian literature as well as a gifted poet in his own right. In his introduction he provides fascinating background detail on Persian poetry written by women through the ages, including common themes and motifs and a brief overview of Iranian history showing how women poets have been affected by the changing dynasties. From Rabe’eh in the tenth century to Fatemeh Ekhtesari in the twenty-first, each of the eighty-four poets in this volume is introduced in a short biographical note, while explanatory notes give further insight into the poems themselves.
