Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Persian Crisis of December, 1911: How It Arose and Whither It May Lead Us During the Nationalist advance on Teheran, Russia had conveyed some 3000 more troops (on July 8) to Resht and Kazvin, and on July 13, 1909, Sir E. Grey admitted, in reply to a question by Mr Flynn, that there were some 4000 troops at Tabriz, 1700 between Resht and Kazvin, and 600 more in other places, adding that they would be withdrawn as soon as they were no longer required for the protection of foreign lives and property from the possibility of danger. During the two years which intervened between the deposition of Muhammad Ali and the first stages of the present crisis it might be supposed that the Persians, rid of their incubus, were free to devote themselves to the task of reforming the government of their country, and especially the finances. They were, however, hampered from the first by a series of troubles for most of which agents and partisans of the ex-shah, aided and abetted in many cases by Russian officials, were responsible. Book Synopsis Britain and the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1906-1911 by : Mansour Bonakdarian
Download or read book Britain and the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1906-1911 written by Mansour Bonakdarian and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoroughly researched account, Mansour Bonakdarian provides an in-depth exploration of the substantial British support for the Iranian constitutional and national struggle of 1906-1911, illuminating the opposition in Britain to Anglo-Russian imperialist intervention in Iran. In painstaking and compelling detail Bonakdarian analyzes, in particular, the role of the Persia Committee, a lobbying group founded in 1908 for the sole purpose of changing Britain's policy toward Iran. This book's strength lies in its coverage of how Sir Edward Grey's policy toward Iran was shaped and the extent to which this policy was affected by sustained criticism from a number of disparate groups including dissenters, radicals, socialists, liberal imperialists, and conservatives. The volume and breadth of primary archival materials used is extensive. Not only have all the standard collections been examined, such as the Foreign Office files and the Cabinet and Grey papers, but also numerous private archives in international libraries have been consulted. Bonakdarian's deep understanding of the Iranian issues yields a rich and balanced approach to the literature in the field. With clear and systematic arguments, he offers an account of diplomatic history that is accessible and persuasive. His scholarship is certain to reinvigorate dialogue on the subject of Anglo-Iranian relations.

Book Synopsis From Empire to Orient by : Geoffrey Nash
Download or read book From Empire to Orient written by Geoffrey Nash and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-07-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Empire to Orient" offers an alternative perspective on Britain's late imperial period by looking at the lives and the writings of the men who chose to defy the conventional social and political attitudes of the British ruling classes towards the Near East. Between the Greek revolt in 1830 and the fall of the Caliphate in 1924 a different kind of voice was heard that was both anti-imperialist and pro-Islamic. Geoffrey Nash places David Urquhart's passionate belief in the ideal of municipal government in Turkey, W.S. Blunt's enthusiasm for the Egyptian reformers of the Azhar, E.G. Browne's zeal for the Persian revolution and Marmaduke Pickthall's pained advocacy of the cause of the Young Turks into their political and historical context and into the context of their writings. The author argues that the actions of these men represented a distinctive identification with the Islamic world and of the involvement of the West in its politics. By condemning Britain's manoeuvres and choice of allies in the Near East, each of these writers embellished a narrative of betrayal and a breach with the British educated classes' view of the Islamic East.Through the lives and writings of these men who identified so passionately with the Islamic world, Nash offers a fascinating perspective on Britain's late imperial period.
