The return of Russia, which even when I wrote was as obvious to rrie as it must, one would think, have been obvious to everybody ex cept Mr George, is already an accomplished fact. The offensive in the West, which I speak of as a future event, is already in pro gress. It would be unwise to prophesy concerning these matters. Before my book is out the military situation may have changed for the worse or for the better. But it is important to emphasise. The fact that the peril of which I write in this book is one which increases instead of diminishes with the improved prospects of victory. The greater the measure of our apparent success, the larger the concessions which the Enemy will be disposed to make, and the more dangerous the possible efi'ect'of such concessions upon uninstructed opinion. For, as you and I realise, in dealing with the thing called Prussia, the acceptance of any concession short of unconditional sur render, is an act of suicide. It is an attempt to provide a compendious statement of the material facts and guiding principles which should be borne in mind by anyone who is con sidering what ought to be done by the governments and peoples of the various states of the world with the object of preventing the outbreak of wars in the future. In the Table of Contents the effect of each chapter is stated in the form of a distinct proposition. The reader will therefore be able by glancing at this Table to perceive at once the lines upon which the text proceeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ensign of Peace Many eminent Philosophers and Divines have laboured with unwearied assiduity for the general good of Mankind, and left behind them a multiplicity of excellent rules, in order to instruct and lead men in the paths of virtue and temperance. I do not pretend to any great degree of knowledge in Philosophy, Divinity, or Physic; yet am certain, that I have hit upon a Medicine which will reduce the Flesh (in a great measure) to the Will of the Spirit, and induce men to walk with pleasure through life, in a more than ordinary good irate of bodily health. A great deal has been said in several pompous advertisements respecting the cure of diseases, though few, I believe, have answered the end proposed. 'Tis far from my design to impose upon the public; and, I hope, such as make a sufficient trial of the Medicine will have no reason to complain of its effects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pax (Peace) The name of the much-wracked republic of Colombia is indissolubly linked with that of the most popular novel that has thus far come out of Spanish America, - the tender, idyllic romance entitled Maria, by Jorge Isaacs (1837-1875). The nationalistic strain in Isaacs was carried forward by later novelists, few of whom have been found worthy of serious consideration by lovers of belles lettres. Among these the outstanding exception is Lorenzo Marroquin (died 1918), whose Pax created a furore at the time of its appearance. For this there were, of course, non-literary reasons. The caustic satire of the book, its spirited caricatures of loathsome national types, imparted to ft all the political zest of an old roman a clef, and more than one public figure believed that he had been held up to scorn in the pages of this colorful, moving novel of love, intrigue, religion, politics and revolution. Yet this is but a superficial aspect of the book, which as a whole should possess for us Americans of the North the attraction exercised by a work that is written in hot sincerity, portraying the evils that consume an author's beloved country! This, perhaps, is the prime impulse in Pax; it was born of a high religious faith in the service of an ardent patriotism. The author is thoroughly imbued with his milieu; he knows the people and their customs, the landscape and its secrets, the vanishing nobility and their foundering ideals. If he has not caught the ideals of the rising lower classes, that is because his novel is, in a sense, the defiant swan-song of a departing era. My books have been read. Clearly, by evidence of the things that have been said of them. And I have noticed that these critics who have, most clearly, in reading my books, under stood what I aimed at, were inclined to point out that my weak point seemed to be construction. There is no peace without justice, no justice without truth, and no truth that is not the achievement of the love that takes sides and conquers - takes sides passionately and conquers definitely. Peace and justice are the same, and so are love and fraternity and truth, and also freedom and faith. They are but different names for the Power that holds the balance of the world. These are the times in which to read, regard less of one's beliefs, the Apocalypse of the apostle who saw the wrath of the Lamb con suming the kingdom and systems that were completing their cycle under the exhausting rule of Rome. There is no better tonic for a wearied and baffled goodwill; no stronger solace for the hearts that have hoped for social liberation and international fraternity, and that now beat low amid the shadows of divine dis appointment. Here, in this Book of the Wars of the Christ, the symbol of the ultimate peace is the lake of glass mingled with fire. It is the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Peace When I was asked last August to prepare a book on the terms of peace, I consented to have it ready by March, 1919. My publishers thought that it should be ready by February first if it was to anticipate the march of events. The writing was completed in October, but even so, events have gotten ahead. It is some consolation to know that the whole world shares in this miscalculation. Neither the peoples nor their governments, the knowing ones who had all the inside information, were prepared for this headlong precipitancy. A letter from one of the staff of the Department of State at Washington expresses the surprise, not to say the consternation, of the government at this sudden development for which we were so eager and yet so utterly unprepared. It was in anticipation of this unpreparedness that the book was written, and yet I too am caught among the unprepared. Naturally I have considered carefully whether any change should be made in the text as the proofs pass through my hands, but save for a few footnotes and minor changes, I have left it as it was written. The difficulty in the phraseology, - all of it appropriate to the situation of last September, - is pervasive. Adaptation to the situation of today would mean re-writing. But it is only the phraseology that the armistice has rendered out of date. The problems remain, - not one of them settled despite confident and contradictory newspaper assertion. Even the signing of the treaty of peace, an event for which we must perhaps long wait in patience, will bring to most of them no immediate solution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 2 of 3 In spite of the indifference which Prince Andrew had chosen to assume before Peter, he watched the course of events from day to day with keen interest, and read a great quantity of books and he noted, with surprise, that his father's visitors fresh from St. Petersburg, from the very headquarters of action, who might therefore be supposed to know what was doing in domestic and foreign politics, were often far less well informed than he was, living secluded in the country.
