Book excerpt: This study explored the predictive nature of the relationship between lay Catholic elementary school principals' professional experiences in Catholic and public schools, demographic information, school demographics, religious formation, and spirituality on the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. Spiritual leadership was conceptualized using Ciriello's (1994) spiritual leadership framework and the behaviors of spiritual leadership were more fully defined using Catholic Church writings and Catholic educational research that describes the responsibilities of spiritual leadership (Barry and Brennan, 2008, Belmonte and Cranston, 2009; Campbell, 2000; Cook, 2001; Curran, 1996; Helm, 1989; Jacobs, 1996, McDermott, 1997; Miller, 2006; Muccigrosso, 1994, Robinson and Cirello, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c, 1994d). Data for this national study came from anonymous surveys responded to by 253 lay Catholic elementary school principals. Principals were invited to participate using a purposeful representative sampling to ensure inclusion of principals from the eight regions represented on National Catholic Educational Association's board. The Catholic Elementary School Principals' Spiritual Leadership Survey (CESPSL) used in this study was developed by the researcher. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Q-Q plots, a series of one-way, between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA), linear regression and stepwise regression analyses. The results of these analyses revealed no significant correlation between the combined years of experience a lay Catholic school principal has in Catholic schools, as a teacher and principal, and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. However, Catholic school experience was found to be predictive of the frequency of principal's spiritual leadership behaviors when their experience in Catholic schools was limited to only those years they served as a principal in their current Catholic school. This study did not find any correlation between the combined years of experience a principal had in public schools prior to their employment as a Catholic elementary school principal and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. This study did find nine demographic, religious formation and spirituality factors that were predictive of the frequency of lay Catholic elementary school principals' spiritual leadership behaviors. These factors include: the principal's age, catechetical certification, ongoing adult religious education, participation in Church Sacraments, support for Catholic Church teachings, participation in the cultural life of a Catholic parish, feeling close to God, daily prayer, and the practice of reflection and contemplation. It is hoped that the results of this study provide diocesan leaders and Catholic colleges and universities with a better understanding of the combination of factors that are correlated with the frequency of principals' spiritual leadership behaviors and that this understanding will help inform decisions that are made regarding the preparation, hiring and ongoing formation of lay Catholic elementary schools principals as spiritual leaders. Recommendations for future research suggest new ways to gain additional insights into the complex relationship between the lay Catholic school principal's professional school experiences, demographic information, religious formation, and spirituality factors and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors as Catholic elementary school principals.

In particular, educational leaders are tasked to lead with a purpose, to guide their communities meaningfully and successfully. However, given their numerous responsibilities, it has since become more difficult to sustain themselves and continue to lead their schools and community members effectively. The purpose of this study was to discover and examine perceptions about leadership in experienced Catholic Elementary School Principals. Specifically, I sought to explore and uncover the strategies and techniques of experienced educational leaders in sustaining their vocations as Catholic leaders. In line with this objective, two research questions guided the study. The first research question asked: What leadership strategies are employed by experienced Catholic school elementary principals to sustain themselves as effective leaders? Meanwhile, the second research question that followed was: What practices do experienced Catholic school elementary principals use to prevent their burnout? To address the purpose of the study and research questions, I interviewed 18 Catholic school elementary principals with at least 10 years of experience. I then performed a content analysis to search for and produce the most common but meaningful themes across the 18 interviews collected. From the analysis, I found that the leadership strategies focused on: motivation, unity in Catholic faith, adaptability, building relationships, and optimism. Further, in response to the practices used to prevent burnout, I uncovered that work-life balance (including their ability to find time for their hobbies and to connect with their religious beliefs and faith practices) and networking and connecting were the most important for the interviewed educational leaders. I was also able to successfully connect these themes to the theoretical frameworks of Emotional Intelligence or EI, transformational leadership, servant leadership, and educational leadership.

Faith leadership is a distinctive aspect of Catholic school administration and one that the Catholic Church has historically acknowledged as paramount to its mission. Faith leadership in this study is defined as exercising the competencies and practices related to faith development, community building, moral formation, and mission advancement. This study investigated the perceptions of the presidents and principals of Catholic secondary schools in six (arch)dioceses within northern California--Monterey, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and Stockton--regarding their practices and their preparation as the faith leaders of their schools. It examined how they exercised their faith leadership responsibilities at their schools relative to four areas: (a) fostering the faith development of school members, (b) building Christian community within the school and with stakeholders, (c) promoting the moral and ethical formation of school members, and (d) advancing the mission of Catholic education. This study utilized mixed methodology: survey research and telephone interviews. Sixty percent of the population, or 41 respondents, completed the on-line survey. Additionally, five survey respondents, representing the participating (arch)dioceses, participated in follow-up telephone interviews. Both presidents and principals under review reported that they exercised the competencies and practices of faith leadership in a variety of ways and to a great extent. They also reported that their experience as Catholic school administrators greatly influenced their ability to be faith leaders in all four areas studied. In addition, they perceived themselves to be prepared for faith leadership in all four areas. These findings are contrary to those of former studies on the topic.

As Catholic schools move further into the 21st century, they face many challenges, including the formation of personnel in their Catholic identity, the high cost of tuition and operations of schools, the preoccupation for financial success of students, and the ongoing rise of secularism in our culture. The USCCB (2005) called upon the Catholic community to address these challenges and to support the advancement of Catholic schools across the nation especially with regard to their Catholic identity and their program effectiveness. This study examined the perceptions of the Catholic elementary school administrators in the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon regarding the extent to which Catholic identity and program effectiveness were operative in their respective schools. The administrators also identified factors that aided as well as challenged the concepts of Catholic identity and program effectiveness. Principals also offered recommendations to the Department of Catholic Schools in Portland to address their concerns. This study utilized mixed methods research: an online survey and face-to-face interviews. The study utilized the Catholic Identity Defining Characteristics Staff Survey and the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness Staff Survey (Ozar & Weitzel-O’Neill, 2012). Of the 39 elementary school principals who received the invitation to participate in the study, 33, or 85%, accepted and completed the surveys (N=33). In addition, a purposeful sample of six administrators that matched the demographics of the general population was selected to complete face-to-face interviews. The collected data revealed that all of the administrators agreed or strongly agreed that Catholic identity and program effectiveness were exhibited in their respective schools. Principals recognized that a supportive pastor and shareholders were vital to their program effectiveness and identity and that strategic planning at the Archdiocesan level was needed.
