Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Lectures for the People The third work done has been to consider and dis cuss many important questions in connection with health and sanitation. In regard to some of these questions, it was decided that it was better not to interfere, and in regard to others, information is still being sought; The Committee wish it to be understood, that the Object Of the Health Society is not to come into collision with the authorities, but rather to co-operate with them. It does not-wish to embarrass or to force legislation; neither do its members wish to make themselves disagreeable in any way. All they want to do, is to educate the public to observe and work for themselves; and the Committee hope, that in time, it will not be necessary for the Society to go to the Public, but that the Public will come to the Society and ask them to assist them in connection with many important health matters. Book excerpt: This concise, conceptually rich, and accessible book is a rallying cry for a return to the study and discussion of epidemiologic theory: what it is, why it matters, how it has changed over time, and its implications for improving population health and promoting health equity. By tracing its history and contours from ancient societies on through the development of--and debates within--contemporary epidemiology worldwide, Dr. Krieger shows how epidemiologic theory has long shaped epidemiologic practice, knowledge, and the politics of public health.

A most im portant accomplishment of the biennial conferences is providing a national forum where organizations and individuals concerned with health data can exchange ideas and discuss current issues. The value of the conferences is indicated by the growth in attendance over the years and by the broader sponsorship which the recent meetings have attracted. With the 17th national meeting of the Con ference, for which our co-sponsors were the Bureau of Health Manpower, and the Bureau of Health Plan ning and Resources Development, Health Resources Administration, registration exceeded persons for the first time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Made Easy for the People, or Physical Training, to Make Their Lives, in This World, Long and Happy Every thing I can do is done; and shall be done, to carry on and complete this good work; and, should I be spared three or four years longer, I hope to be in a position to prove, that, if any children in the United Kingdom are then not being taught how to live long and be happy, it is not my fault. I could not sleep, if I neglected my duty in this matter; and yet I meet with some really good people who regard it with apathy or indifference. They seem to forget that the physical and mental laws of our nature discovered by science are as much God's laws as if he had revealed them to man in his written Word; which seems to be chiefly intended to make known to us truths, principles, and laws we never could find out, and not such as we possessed full means of discovering and applying for ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medicine and Public Health in the People's Republic of China In 1969 the Fogarty International Center began a series of studies of research and health activities in other countries in relation to their political and economic structure. The first study dealt with Soviet programs in research and public health as they have evolved in the political structure established following the Bolshevik Revolution of November 1917. In late 1970 the Fogarty International Center began a search for in formation about medical and public health activities in the People's Republic of China. A long silence has shrouded that nation, which has almost one-fourth of the world's population, an ancient and respected civilization, and a long and honorable medical tradition. During 1971 communication between the United States and Mainland China re sumed after a hiatus of more than twenty years. For those who believe that the universal desire for health and relief from disease and suffering may be the strongest key to peace and international cooperation, it is significant and heartening to observe that physicians were among the first groups granted permission to visit the Pe0p1e's Republic of China. It provides a natural presentation of country as well as city health problems, or rural as well as munic ipal sanitation. It presents a perspective of the changes in the mode of living during the last few generations, and, what is perhaps more important, it allows the pupil to see the origin and need of town and city government in the maintenance of health. The health-education program at this grade level stresses continued training in the habits of healthful living as a primary objective. Suggestions for the im portant and regular program of health-training are given in Chapter I. It is assumed that these suggestions will be adapted to local needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health; Five Lay Sermons to Working People The other two sermons were never preached, except in print; but they were composed in the same key. Isay this not in defence, but in ex planation. I have tried to speak to working men and women from my lay pulpit, in the same words, with the same voice, with the same thoughts I was in the habit of using when doctoring them. This is the reason of their plain speaking. There is no other way of reaching these sturdy and weather and work-beaten understandings; there is nothing line about them outside, though they are Often as white in the skin under their clothes as a duchess, and their hearts as soft and ten der as Jonathan's, or as Rachel's, or our own Grizel Baillie's but you must speak out to them, and must not be mealy-mouthed if you wish to reach their minds and affections and wills. I wish the gentle folks could bear, and could use a little more of this outspokenness; and, as old Porson said, condescend to call a spade a spade, and not a horticultural implement; five letters instead of twenty-two, and more to the purpose. You see, my dear working friends, I am great upon sparing your strength and taking things cannily. All very well, ' say you; 'it is easy Speaking, and saying, Take it easy; but if the pat's on the fire, it maun bile.' It must, but you needn't poke up the fire for ever, and you may now and then set the kettle on the hob, and let it sing, instead of leaving it to burn its bottom out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Health Control An earnest effort has been made to place every phase Of the subject upon the basis of cause and eject and to eliminate as far as possible the interminable maze of guesswork which is the bane of much hygiene teaching. That every sound prin ciple has its basis in some physiological condition is axiomatic, and to portray the means through which a given cause produces its effect is necessary to correct teaching and thinking. To facilitate the work of reviewing such facts of physiology as under lie health principles, and to which only brief reference can be made, occasional page references are given to two high school physiologies Hough and Sedgwick's The Human Mechanism and the author's Physiology and Hygiene for Secondary Schools. For investigating topics that go beyond the present text in matters of hygiene, Rosenau's Preventive Medicine and Hygiene and Harrington's A Manual of Practical Hygiene are earnestly recommended. For collateral reading, Gulick's Efiicient Life, Pyle's Personal Hygiene, Galbraith's Personal Hygiene and Physical Culture for Women, Allen's Civics and Health, Hoag's Health Index of Children, Drummond's An Introduction to School Hygiene, and Coleman's The People's Health will prove most interesting and helpful.
