Book excerpt: 'A masterly, vivid and original sketch, not just of the history but of the culture (or cultures) of the Church of England across nearly five centuries.' Rowan Williams, poet and former Archbishop of Canterbury It is hard to comprehend the last 500 years of England's history without understanding the Church of England. From its roots in Catholicism through to the present day, this is the extraordinary history of a familiar but much-misunderstood institution. The Church has frequently been divided between high and low, Evangelical and Anglo-Catholic. For its first 150 years people sacrificed their lives to defend it; the Anglican Church is and has always been defined by its complicated relationship to the state and power. As Jeremy Morris shows, the story of the Church - central to British life - has never been straightforward. Weaving social, political and religious context together with the significance of its music and architecture, A People's Church skilfully illuminates a complex and pre-eminent institution.

Book excerpt: Herbert Cooper was headed down a very different road, living a reckless lifestyle that would have destroyed him in the end, but God had a different plan. He heard the gospel at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, at which he wasn’t even supposed to be, and he gave his life to Christ. Two words changed Cooper’s life: But God. These two words can change every single person’s life— But God. Each word is only three letters long. The phrase is short, but the implications are huge. The path may look bleak, dim, and hopeless...but GOD changes everything... We’ve all sinned - whether it is sex outside of marriage, a bitter heart, alcohol or drug abuse, cheating, or lying. Maybe you’re at a place in your life where it just feels like things are falling apart. Perhaps you’re portraying one thing on the outside and living something else on the inside. Maybe you are simply going through the motions of a life that’s not quite what you hoped it would be. These moments drag us down - leaving us feeling hopeless and lost. You need something to happen in your life to change. You need a But God... moment. The But God moments are when God comes in and offers a new path and hope for our lives. These moments occur when we are at are lowest, and turn our down-trodden worlds around for the better. It is up to us to recognize and seize these moments when they occur and follow the renewed path God offers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proclamation of the gospel is the responsibility of the baptized rather than the privilege of the ordained. Preaching is not a solo endeavor. It is a communal practice, a ministry of the whole congregation that is most faithful when the process is shared. In The Peoples' Sermon, Shauna K. Hannan argues that it is no longer faithful for a preacher to craft a sermon in isolation, step into "the pulpit" (literally or metaphorically) on Sunday morning, offer a one-sided monologue, and on Monday start all over, alone, with the process of researching and writing in preparation for the following Sunday. Hannan's goal is to create vital worshipping communities where all know and live out their roles in the preaching ministry of the congregation, where both clergy and laity are empowered and equipped in their roles before, during, and after the sermon. She encourages readers to reflect on what preaching is and why the church engages in this practice, and to explore various roles in the preaching ministry of the congregation. She guides readers and their communities through a process that equips hearers to fulfill their active roles in the preaching ministry of the congregation. The Peoples' Sermon dares to suggest that preaching is most faithful when it is collaborative. Pastors do not own the pulpit; they steward it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are not all religions equally close to and equally far from God? Why, then, the Church? Gerhard Lohfink poses these questions with scholarly reliability and on the basis of his own experience of community in Does God Need the Church? In 1982 Father Lohfink wrote Wie hat Jesus Gemeinde gewollt? (translated into English as Jesus and Community) to show, on the basis of the New Testament, that faith is founded in a community that distinguishes itself in clear contours from the rest of society. In that book he also described a sequence of events that moved directly from commonality to a community that was readily accessible to every group of people and was made legitimate by Jesus himself. Only later did Father Lohfink learn, within a new horizon of experience, that such a description is not the way to community. The story of the gathering of the people of God, from Abraham until today, never took place according to such a model. Today Father Lohfink states that he would not write Wie hat Jesus Gemeinde gewollt? the same way. The situation of belief and believers has undergone a shift: the question of the Church has become much more urgent. Church life is declining and the religions are returning, often in new guises. In light of these shifts and the change in his own view of community, Father Lohfink inquires in Does God Need the Church? of Israel's theology, Jesus' praxis, the experiences of the early Christian communities, and of what is appearing in the Church today. These inquiries lead to an amazing history involving God and the world - a history that God presses forward with the aid of a single people and that always turns out differently from what they think and plan.

Global markets gain and tumble, economies rise and fall. Organizations need to constantly improvise and adapt to changing conditions. Concepts, theories, and ideas about management, organizational development, entrepreneurship, leadership, employee motivation, and numerous areas surrounding the workplace keep on evolving. This is indeed necessary as the marketplace is constantly changing. Amidst this continuous change, there are some constants. There are principles that transcend time, place, people, and culture. We refer to these as “Timeless Principles.” They hold true regardless of the variants of when, where, what, and why. This is not a management book, but a book of “Timeless Principles.” At the workplace, we encounter numerous challenges—corrupt sales processes, accounting malpractices, unscrupulous bosses, questionable advertising methods, employment terminations, the challenge of time for family, struggles with work–life balance, and many other situations. This book provides these “Timeless Principles.” Entire organizations and businesses can be transformed as its people assimilate and apply these “Timeless Principles.” Watch our online Sunday Church service live stream every Sunday at 10:30am (Indian Time, GMT+5:30). Of these, one of the most powerful revelations of God is that of a Father. God is our heavenly Father. The Lord Jesus taught us to call God “Our Father.” The Bible reveals the Father’s love for us. This book is a study on the Father’s love. Our understanding of God’s love for us affects how we love God, how we love ourselves, and how we love others. God, our Father in heaven, loves us unconditionally and immeasurably. The greatest expression and demonstration of the Father’s love for us is the Cross of Jesus Christ. When we know, believe, receive, and rest in the Father’s love for us, everything changes. We are healed, made whole and set free from all our brokenness and bondages. When we live out of the Father’s love we love as we are loved. We love God freely. We love others freely. We live as more than conquerors, those who have more than vanquished all of life’s challenges and the powers of darkness, through the unbreakable love of God. This book is for YOU! Book excerpt: Celebrate Pride every day with the teen advocate, trailblazer, and reality show star Jazz Jennings—one of Time Magazine's "25 Most Influential Teens" of the year. In this groundbreaking memoir, she inspires people to accept the differences in others while they embrace their own truths through sharing her very public transgender journey. "Jazz is one of the transgender community's most important activists." —Cosmopolitan "A role model for teens everywhere." —Seventeen At the age of five, Jazz Jennings’s transition to life as a girl put her in the public spotlight after she shared her story on national television. She’s since become one of the most recognizable and prominent advocates for transgender teens, through her TV show, interviews, and social media. Jazz’s openness has led to bullying and mistreatment from those who don’t understand her choices. She’s fought for the right to use the girls’ bathroom and to play on a girls’ soccer team, paving the way for others. And in this book, Jazz faces an even greater struggle—dealing with the physical and social stresses of being a teen. But being on the front lines of trans activism doesn't stop Jazz from experiencing the joys of growing up, from day camp to first dates. Jazz Jennings is one of the youngest and most prominent voices in the national discussion about gender identity. This remarkable memoir is a testament to the power of accepting yourself, learning to live an authentic life, and helping everyone to embrace their own truths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long, the history of Christianity has been told as the triumph of orthodox doctrine imposed through power and hierarchy. In A People's History of Christianity, historian and religion expert Diana Butler Bass reveals an alternate history that includes a deep social ethic and far-reaching inclusivity: "the other side of the story" is not a modern phenomenon, but has always been practiced within the church. Butler Bass persuasively argues that corrective—even subversive—beliefs and practices have always been hallmarks of Christianity and are necessary to nourish communities of faith. In the same spirit as Howard Zinn's groundbreaking work The People's History of the United States, Butler Bass's A People's History of Christianity brings to life the movements, personalities, and spiritual disciplines that have always informed and ignited Christian worship and social activism. A People's History of Christianity authenticates the vital, emerging Christian movements of our time, providing the historical evidence that celebrates these movements as thoroughly Christian and faithful to the mission and message of Jesus.

Book excerpt: Every believer has been blessed with the wonderful privilege to call upon, speak and use the mighty name of Jesus. The disciples of Jesus and believers in the Early Church understood the authority that was at their disposal through the use of the name of Jesus, and they walked in it. This book attempts to help the believer re-discover the power of the name of Jesus and teaches how to walk in the power of that name in everyday life. We can walk in authority and dominion, in perfect peace and in all of God's provision when we learn to walk in the power of the name of Jesus. He loves and saves to the uttermost, no matter what the cost. God always seeks to redeem and bring things back to Himself. We are called to be like Him, and hence our approach to life situations and to the problems we face must be redemptive as well. In this study, our goal is to understand and capture the redemptive heart of God, so that we will learn to view life’s situations with His redemptive eyes and learn to be coworkers with God in His redemptive process for things in our own lives as well as those around us. God’s redemptive process involves key elements of Time, Sacrifice, Forgiveness, and Restoration. We are here to be co-workers with God in this redemptive process. We must work with God, recognizing and following each element of His redemptive process, as He works to redeem things in our lives, as well as when we co-labor with Him to see His redemptive work take place in other people’s lives. What is it that you want God to redeem in your life? God is your Redeemer. Nothing is beyond His ability to redeem. You can look to Him in faith, no matter what your circumstances are and experience His redemptive work. This book will help you do this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all groups in Christendom, the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement is second in size only to the Roman Catholic Church, with growth that shows no signs of abatement. Its adherents declare the Pentecostal Movement, which began at Azusa Street in 1906, to be unprecedented in Christian history since the first century of the Church in its embrace of manifestations of the Holy Spirit such as divine healing, miracles, and speaking in tongues. Yet although it may be unprecedented in size and rate of growth, Stanley M. Burgess argues that is hardly unprecedented in concept. In Christian Peoples of the Spirit, Burgess collects documentary evidence for two thousand years of individuals and groups who have evidenced Pentecostal/charismatic-like spiritual giftings, worship, and experience. The documents in this collection, bolstered by concise editorial introductions, offer the original writings of a wide variety of “peoples of the spirit,” from Tertullian and Antony of the Desert to the Shakers and Sunder Singh, as well as of their enemies or detractors. Though virtually all of the parties in this volume considered themselves Spirit-gifted, or given special qualities by God, they are in many ways as different from one another as the cultures from which they have emerged. In providing such an impressive array of voices, Burgess convincingly demonstrates that there have indeed been Spirit-filled worship and charismatic saints in all periods of church history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a narrative that has urgent significance for every church congregation facing the racial dilemma of mid-twentieth century America, Howard Thurman tells the dramatic story of the founding of the first fully integrated church in the United States--the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco. Dr. Thurman, cofounder and long time minister, gives a complete and intimate picture of the beginnings of Fellowship Church, its early problems, experiments, and successful attainment of complete interracial unity. In simple, moving terms he describes the everyday events of church life--worship services, choir practice, church school, etc. - against the background of a multiracial congregation. Through his genius the reader experiences the anxious moments of forming new patterns of organization, the thrill of new and unexpected allies, of vistas opening into the future.
