Download or read book 266 Days written by Michael W. Tracy, Ph.D. and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2015 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though mostly forgotten, for nearly nine months in 1777 and 1778, British forces held the city of Philadelphia. With 266 Days: Eye-Witness Accounts of the British Occupation of Philadelphia, author Michael W. Tracy, Ph.D., hopes to fill this gap in the story of the war which shaped the American nation. Tracy combines accounts from the Pennsylvania Evening Post with excerpts from journal entries and personal letters from well-known figures (such as George Washington and Thomas Paine), citizens living in and around Philadelphia, and soldiers on the front lines, to give readers a "diary-like" account of the occupation. Tracy brings to life voices from the past to present a vivid story of life--on both sides of the conflict--during the occupation. As we read accounts not only of war, but also of everyday life, the story of the occupation becomes more than just another war story--it becomes a historical treasure.

Book excerpt: The Revolutionary War historian provides “a comprehensive and accessible guide” to the vital influence France had on America’s path to independence (Publishers Weekly). French support for United States independence was both vital and varied, ranging from ideological inspiration to financial and military support. In this study, historian Norman Desmarais offers an in-depth analysis of this crucial relationship, exploring whether America could have won its independence without its first ally. Demarais begins with the contributions of French Enlightenment thinkers who provided the intellectual frameworks for the American and French revolutions. He then covers the many forms of aid provided by France during the Revolutionary War, including the contributions of individual French officers and troops, as well as covert aid provided before the war began. France also provided naval assistance, particularly to the American privateers who harassed British shipping. Detailed accounts drawn from ships’ logs, court and auction records, newspapers, letters, diaries, journals, and pension applications. In a more sweeping analysis, Desmarais explores the international nature of a war which some consider the first world war. When France and Spain entered the conflict, they fought the Crown forces in their respective areas of economic interest. In addition to the engagements in the Atlantic Ocean, along the American and European coasts and in the West Indies, there are accounts of action in India and the East Indies, South America and Africa.

Book Synopsis The Friendships of John Adams, 1774-1801 by : Jamie Macpherson
Download or read book The Friendships of John Adams, 1774-1801 written by Jamie Macpherson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first extended analysis of the friendship network of John Adams, forged during his lengthy public career from 1774-1801. While scholars have considered historic friendships, this monograph examines Adams’s friendship network within a generation of revolutionaries. The six friendships explored exemplify the diversity of political interaction: primary friendship (Abigail), intimate confidence (Rush), political alliance (Gerry), emergent rivalry (Jefferson), the politics of personal difference (Mercy Otis Warren), and idolised revolutionary (Samuel Adams). This work positions friendship at the heart of the historian’s craft; reconstructing historic relationships and considering the evolution of each dyad to examine the tensions, candour, intimacy, and forms of alliance in each. Adams’s impassioned epistles present a window into his private ruminations. John Adams’s expectation of friendship changed at each stage of his career: Through 1774-1801, Adams entreated support from friends, debated issues pertaining to politics, diplomacy, and the national interest, sought comfort from intimates, and lamented divisions from former friends. For John Adams, friendship represented the art of politics. This volume will be of value to students and scholars alike interested in American history, political history and social and cultural history.
