Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1897, Vol. 21 From 1710 until after William Penn's death in 1718, the home of the family was at Ruscombe, a place in Berkshire, near Twyford. It was rented by Penn, and from an expres sion in a letter of Hannah Penn, already cited, the house seems to have been a large and expensive one. Like most of the houses in which the Founder had his home in the course of his life, Ruscombe has been entirely destroyed. The traveller by rail from London to Reading now passes over the spot where it stood, in the last deep cutting between Maidenhead and Twyford, on the Great Western Railway. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Notes of Dr. Benjamin Rush, 1777 Mr. John Adams said, that he lately travelled thro' New Eng that he was sure that the approbation of the Con gress of the meeting would give pleasure to the committee and their constituents. That thier meeting was founded in necessity. That altho' we were not confederated, the same principles of equity reason should govern as if we were united by a confederacy - that the four New England states bore the same relation to the Congress that four counties bore to a single state. These four counties have a right to meet to regulate roads - and affairs that relate to the poor but they have no right to tax or execute any other branch of legislation. In like manner the four New Eng States, or any other four states have a right to meet upon matters Wholly indifferent, but they have no right to touch upon continental subjects - that the committee from the 4 New Eng States have touched upon continental Subjects, therefore, the meeting stands in need of the approbation of the Congress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1889, Vol. 13 I declined your appointment as historian of the bar and bench of Allegheny County. I found that the admissions to this bar in 1863 had been six hundred and fifty. The correspondence and labor of collecting information and the compilation of even a partial number of sketches would ex tend over many months, resulting in a large book instead of a modest pamphlet appropriate to this occasion. I there fore undertook to furnish a few sketches only of promi nent lawyers of the last century and earlier years of this. Brief as these must be, they occupy a large space. But too much cannot be sacrificed to brevity. It would be to omit much that is interesting, and leave virtues, peculiarities, and true character often obscure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1916, Vol. 40 Mr. President, Fellow Members of the Historical Society, and Distinguished Guests of the Bench and Bar: We have met tonight to do honor to the memory of one who for nineteen years was our Senior Vice President - from November 12, 1896, to July 4, 1915 - and who for fifty-five years was in close personal and official relationship to our active work. Beginning with a life membership in 1859, when he was but twenty-five years of age, he was elected a member of the Council in 1881, becoming President of the Council in 1883, and holding that office until his death; filling acceptably, as manifested by successive re-elections, one of the Vice Presidencies of the Society until, through the deaths of Judge Craig Biddle and Dr. Henry Charles Lea, he attained seniority in 1896, becoming at the same time a Trustee of the Gilpin Library. During all these years he was in hearty sympathy with our purposes, and by generous gifts added substantially to our treasures.
