Book excerpt: "An incisive, elegantly written, new book about America’s unique role in the world." --Tom Friedman, The New York Times A brilliant and visionary argument for America's role as an enforcer of peace and order throughout the world--and what is likely to happen if we withdraw and focus our attention inward. Recent years have brought deeply disturbing developments around the globe. American sentiment seems to be leaning increasingly toward withdrawal in the face of such disarray. In this powerful, urgent essay, Robert Kagan elucidates the reasons why American withdrawal would be the worst possible response, based as it is on a fundamental and dangerous misreading of the world. Like a jungle that keeps growing back after being cut down, the world has always been full of dangerous actors who, left unchecked, possess the desire and ability to make things worse. Kagan makes clear how the "realist" impulse to recognize our limitations and focus on our failures misunderstands the essential role America has played for decades in keeping the world's worst instability in check. A true realism, he argues, is based on the understanding that the historical norm has always been toward chaos--that the jungle will grow back, if we let it.
Book Synopsis The Valley of Hope by : David N. Sanders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the early 1970s, The Valley of Hope follows a group of expatriates, predominately Americans and Australians, who are engaged at the forefront of Indonesia’s ambitious quest for petroleum riches. They work for the Indonesian company NUKI—Nusa Udara Kisaran Indonesia (Island Helicopters Indonesia)—the largest helicopter operator in Indonesia. It operates a fleet of venerable Huey helicopters of Vietnam War fame—the same helicopter that is being featured daily, along with body-counts from the war, on prime-time TV. For the multitude of oil field workers and support personnel manning the rigs in the interior of Borneo, the Huey is their only link to civilization and perhaps their only chance for survival if they became injured or afflicted with illness. The Huey is both life and death. Due to the rigorous demands on both the flight crews and the aircraft, accidents are a frequent occurrence. Most NUKI employees approach life with a lighthearted attitude and strive do everything possible to make their existence in Indonesia more enjoyable. Even so, some of them are in the process of coming to terms with the traumas of their wartime experiences, while others are dealing with relationship problems. The Valley of Hope provides glimpses of Indonesian customs and culture that help to explain how decades of endemic corruption have resulted in the turmoil and political instability that is shattering Indonesia today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the premise that a society’s sense of commonality depends upon media practices, this study examines how Hollywood responded to the crisis of democracy during the Second World War by creating a new genre - the war film. Developing an affective theory of genre cinema, the study’s focus on the sense of commonality offers a new characterization of the relationship between politics and poetics. It shows how the diverse ramifications of genre poetics can be explored as a network of experiental modalities that make history graspable as a continuous process of delineating the limits of community.

Book Synopsis Between the Dances by : Jacqueline Dinan
Download or read book Between the Dances written by Jacqueline Dinan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The start of World War 2 changed women’s lives and their place in Australian society forever. Thousands of women ventured where few had gone before – into the services and workplaces previously considered the sole preserve of men. In preparation for her book Between the Dances, Jacqueline Dinan, interviewed over three hundred women around Australia to collect the last first hand stories from World War 2. Revealing poignant and personal conversations, photographs and letters, Between the Dances is a testament to real life during World War 2. From Malta to Australia, New Zealand to the UK, the challenges and adventures faced by these women were unprecedented. Their passion, courage, resilience and commitment during wartime were all a precursor to the astonishing changes brought about by this incredible generation. For the first time, women were doing their bit as nurses in war zones, members of the services, farmhands, factory workers or volunteers in community service. The last tradition left was the weekly dance, which ceremoniously brought these courageous women and men together for a quickstep, fox trot and brief respite from the rigours of wartime. The accounts are enhanced by poignant, amusing and insightful anecdotes along with scores of previously unpublished and unique photographs from personal albums. Jacqueline’s former experience was in corporate and art communications and events, before she embarked on her own public relations and events business. Now a regular speaker with the Country Women’s Association, Australian Rotary Clubs, Legacy, Red Cross and Memorial groups, Jacqueline has become a well-known figure amongst The Returned & Services League of Australia.

Book Synopsis The Bataan Death March by : Chad Godfrey
Download or read book The Bataan Death March written by Chad Godfrey and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2024-11-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor in late 1941, over 70,000 American and Filipino servicemen were captured by the Japanese in the Philippines. What ensued for these young men is considered by many military historians to be one of the most barbaric sequences of war crimes in history, yet it remains an incredibly inspiring story of unmatched heroism and survival. According to the Japanese code of Bushido a soldier captured alive had dishonored himself and his country, so their new prisoners were often regarded with utter contempt. Then Second Lieutenant Patrick Rafferty and his fellow “Battling Bastards of Bataan” had just forfeited the right to be treated humanely, at least in the eyes of their captors. Forced to march shoeless over sixty-five miles northward in unbearable heat with no water or food, men were routinely executed if they showed any signs of slowing the forward progress towards their internment camp. Some estimates suggest that nearly 18,000 men perished during the infamous Bataan Death March, bones and souls left unceremoniously in shallow graves on a dusty roadside. Ghastly Japanese prison camps awaited those ‘lucky’ enough to survive the Death March. Long, hard days of unrelenting slave labor under the watchful eyes and beating sticks of the prison guards drove many a young soldier to his early grave. If the torture and executions did not take one’s life, any number of intestinal diseases could, and often did. Having no communication with the outside world, the prisoners were assured the US and its allies had surrendered, adding heavy layers of mental anguish on top of the gruesome physical toll endured. Adding to this tortuous uncertainty, prisoners like Rafferty were routinely shuffled to new locations, sometimes via the notorious ‘hell ships’ like Oryoku Maru, where Allied soldiers were routinely drowned or murdered by the thousands, often by friendly fire. Still, tales of unwavering friendship and camaraderie thread beautifully throughout Rafferty’s account, often charmed by his Boston-Irish sense of humor, offering well-placed balance to the horrors. Decades later, then Lieutenant Colonel Rafferty would finally, bravely share his long-suppressed memories and the pain they brought. Speaking into a handheld tape recorder with striking detail, he revealed the true story of what he and his comrades endured. Amongst other jaw-dropping anecdotes from his three-and-a-half years as a POW, perhaps his most gripping personal horror was burying his sickly friend alive as a bayonet pointed into the back of his own neck to ensure the shoveling continued. This, then, is a moving first-hand account of survival at its most brutal core.

Download or read book The Years of Hope written by Philip Snow and published by Radcliffe Press. This book was released on 1997-12-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Cambridge, in 1938, Philip Snow left the first-class cricket field and sailed halfway around the world to pursue a Colonial Service career. His work in Fiji could hardly have been more varied: Commissioner, Magistrate, Officer-in-Charge-of-Police, Superintendent of Gaols, Reciever of Wrecks and Colonial Secretary. He was joined by his fiancee, just before the exotic setting was shattered by the Pacific War. After Pearl Harbor and the fall of Singapore, Fiji was virtually surrounded by the Japanese. Philip Snow was Government Liaison Officer during this critical period. The presence of C.P. Snow, his elder brother, exerted a powerful influence on Philip's life during this time. This is a record of the flavour of British experience in the colonies. Overshadowing all is the theme of racial harmony, mutual tolerance and distant respect which informed Snow's life.
