Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peak District of Derbyshire and Neighbouring Counties Definition of the Peak District. "Can yon tell me which is the Peak?" asked a gentleman whom we once found surveying with an unsatisfied expression of countenance the prospect from the Ordnance cairn on Axe Edge. "With pleasure ..." we began. A man who was writing a guide book to the Peak district could surely have no difficulty in pointing out which was the Peak, especially from a viewpoint commanding the greater part of it. A difficulty there is, however, and it is two-fold - natural and artificial. Natural, because except the little pimple which forms the summit of Win Hill and the two or three abrupt little limestone crags rising from the upper valley of the Dove, there is nothing whatever in the whole panorama from Axe Edge to correspond with the Johnsonian definition of a peak as a "sharply-pointed hill." There is scarcely a hill-country in Britain which has fewer peaks than the Peak itself. A more appropriate name would be the "Cop" - a word signifying a rounded hill as opposed to a peak, and actually occurring in one or two instances in or near the district: e. g. - Mow Cop, Wardlow Hay Cop. - It seems to be of the same origin as the Dutch "Kop" and the Latin "Caput." Then, artificially or politically - whichever it be - the geography of the district has got strangely mixed up. The area described in this book includes the whole of the hill - country of North Derbyshire and such parts of the adjacent counties as physically belong to it: - the basins, to wit, of the Derwent, the Wye, the Dove, the Dane, and the Goyt. This definition, however, is purely arbitrary. Neither the Ordnance surveyors nor the local authorities support it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peak District of Derbyshire and the Neighbourhood Those who start from London (mansion House) by the old north route will probably do well to take train to Finchley (7 m.) or High Barnet both on the G. N. Line. This route joins the Edgware route (variation a) at St Albans As far as surface and hills go, the1e is little to be said about any of the routes till De1by' is reached. There is not very much of special interest on any of these routes afte1 St Albans is passed, the roads being good and fairly level throughout, and the scenery of the ordinary midland counties type. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetation of the Peak District The study of vegetation in the British Isles, begun by the late Robert Smith, is being vigorously prosecuted by the members of the British Vegetation Committee. Already, several vegetation maps and memoirs have been published of parts of the central and northern Pennines, Scotland, Ireland, and Somerset by W.G. Smith, Lewis, Pethybridge, Praeger, Rankin, and myself, in addition to several minor publications by these and other members. Whilst this book was going through the press, Tansley sTypes of British Vegetation appeared, where, for the first time, a sketch of the plant formations and plant associations of the whole of the British Isles is given. Several vegetation maps, of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Norfolk, north-eastern Yorkshire, Lanarkshire, and other districts, have been finished by various members of the Vegetation Committee, but cannot be published at present owing to lack of funds. The present volume and the accompanying maps owe their publication to the generosity of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, whom I take the present opportunity of thanking on my own behalf and on that of British phytogeographers and ecologists in general. I fear, however, that, until government recognition is taken of the botanical survey of the country, publication of this kind of work will continue to languish. The present work is the result of a botanical survey of the Peak District of the southern Pennines begun in January, 1903. In preparing the vegetation maps, the Ordnance maps on the scale of six inches to the mile(1: 10560)were used for field work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peak District Throughout the year this valley never fails to suggest a foreign country: in the blackness of mid winter one might believe oneself in Norway; in spring and summer one is curiously reminded of Switzer land; in autumn, when the foliage glows marvellously, one might be looking upon some fanciful picture done by a southern painter with a passion for vivid colour. To the right flows the Derwent, with clear waters tranquil before the crossing of a white weir, or churning merrily between great boulders. The wildness of its mountains, the beauty of its dales, and the various objects with which they are adorned, entitle it to a distinction it has never yet attained, and constitute a powerful claim to individual consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Foot Through the Peak: Or a Summer Saunter Among the Hills and Dales of Derbyshire The call for a second edition has enabled the Author to revise his work, and bring down the information to the present time. He has also reconstructed one or two of the earlier chapters, and abridged several hastily-written passages that appeared to make larger demands upon the patience of his readers than it might be desirable to venture upon; by so doing he has been able to include the description of other places of interest that for want of space were omitted in the first edition. A new feature in the present volume is the Itinerary appended to it, which it is hoped will be found serviceable to the tourist.
