Book excerpt: The author addresses himself in this book to the problem of differences and similarities in the theologies of the New Testament writers, and seeks to show in this examination what he calls the pattern of New Testament truth. He argues against an overemphasis upon Gnosticism in the study of the background of the New Testament; and then goes on to consider a philosophical movement, prevalent during the first century, about which much more is known -- Greek dualism, especially as expressed by Plato, Plutarch and Philo. He points out the differences between Greek and New Testament thought, and goes on to contrast the Greek view of reality with that of the Hebrews, which he concludes to be essentially that of the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT SATAN CANNOT CONQUER – HE CONTAMINATES! Many churches today are blatantly disobedient in carrying out the Great Commission as given to us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Himself. Therefore, they provide and incorrect and ineffective witness for the kingdom mission to the world. The Commission mandates that New Testament churches everywhere, “make disciples.” Most churches “baptize them” but neglect to “teach them to obey all things” that He has commanded. Neglect of this vital component only produces more biblically illiterate and confused Christians. Lacking the knowledge of the truth, vulnerable Christians are succumbing in great numbers to the secular, atheistic agenda, aberrant doctrine, and blatant heresy. The immediate prioritizing and reinstitution of true Christian theological education, pastoral training, and leadership development are crucial to correctly grow Christians into spiritually and biblically mature disciples [according to pattern].

Book excerpt: Walter Bauer's 'Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Christianity' created a stir with its argument that the teachings later condemned as heresy, in the later second century onward, were, in fact, dominant in the earliest decades of the church. This full-scale response by H. E. W. Turner has not enjoyed the attention it deserves. Turner's volume represents a learned and sophisticated restatement of the traditional view: what became official orthodoxy was taught early on by the majority of church teachers, albeit not in fully developed form.

Book excerpt: MOVING FROM A "BLUEPRINT HERMENEUTIC" TO A THEOLOGICAL ONE In this book, John Mark Hicks tells the story of his own hermeneutical journey in reading the Bible. Lovingly and graciously, he describes his transition from a "blueprint hermeneutic" to a theological one. Some suggest that moving away from a patternistic command-example-and-necessary-inference approach for understanding what God requires leaves no other alternative, or at least none that both respects biblical authority and seeks to obey the gospel of Jesus the Messiah. In Searching for the Pattern, John Mark offers just such an alternative. His theological hermeneutic is deeply rooted in the way the Bible presents itself as a dramatic history of God's plan to redeem the world as well as his own experience of growing up among Churches of Christ. Seeing the gospel of Jesus as the center of the biblical drama reorients us to what provides our Christian identity and unites us as disciples of Jesus. ********** I pray this book is received with open hearts and open minds because I believe this work could go a long way in helping to bring unity to our fractured fellowship. --Wes McAdams, Preaching Minister for the church of Christ on McDermott Road, Plano, Texas This excellent book helps us understand the inner workings of Bible interpretation among Churches of Christ and provides a persuasive proposal for Bible interpretation that is built on the story of God we find in Scripture--a story into which God calls us. --James L. Gorman, Associate Professor of History, Johnson University Knoxville, Tennessee Finally, a trellis across the chasm! Throughout this book, Hicks does not compromise his high regard for both the church and the Scriptures; and through the grace found therein, he composes this urgent invitation back to the Table, where obedience cooperates with mystery, and we--estranged or conflicted--can find our place as one within God's magnificent story. --Tiffany Mangan Dahlman, Minister at Courtyard Church of Christ, Fayetteville, North Carolina John Mark Hicks is Professor of Theology at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. He has taught for thirty-eight years in schools associated with the Churches of Christ. He has published fifteen books and lectured in twenty countries and forty states and is married to Jennifer. They share six children and six grandchildren.

Book excerpt: Searching for the Truth in the New Testament offers a comprehensive discussion of many Biblical passages in the New Testament and of those to which they refer in the Old Testament. It presents as well, noteworthy facts about the history of ancient Middle East and the evolution of the Early Church, with logical and insightful commentary. Jon Valset provides an orderly and meticulous analysis of the life and times of Jesus Christ and the conditions under which the New Testament was compiled. With so many details easily misinterpreted or overlooked in the Bible, Valset digs through the maze of seemingly irrelevant and contradictory narratives and statements to present clear and novel assessments of the Biblical texts, free of preconceived ideas and theological goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is no less than to provide an account of the unfolding of the mind of God in history, through the successive agents of his special revelation. Vos handles this under three main divisions: the Mosaic epoch of revelation, the prophetic epoch of revelation, and the New Testament. Such an historical approach is not meant to supplant the work of the systematic theologian; nevertheless, the Christian gospel is inextricably bound up with history, and the biblical theologian thus seeks to highlight uniqueness of each biblical document in that succession. The rich variety of Scripture is discovered anew as the progressive development of biblical themes is explicated. To read these pages--the fruit of Vos' 39 years of teaching biblical theology at Princeton - is to appreciate the late John Murray's suggestion that Geerhardus Vos was the most incisive exegete in the English-speaking world of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schweizer listens carefully to the testimony of the various New Testament writers in order to understand the theological problem of how the New Testament church understood itself, and how it expressed that understanding in its order. The purely historical question about the form of the church at different times is seen by Schweizer as necessary, but need only be asked insofar as the actual shaping of the church is always evidence of the concept of its own nature to which it testifies. Thus, Schweizer arranges the New Testament writings primarily by the theological kinship of their idea of the church, providing a comprehensive examination of the church in the New Testament and Apostolic Fathers. He treats both the diversity of views and the unity found in these writings. He also discusses issues relating to church office, ministry, and ordination.
