Download or read book My Three Fathers written by Bill Patten and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Patten grew up in the heart of privileged society to American parents—a debutante mother, a diplomatic father—stationed in Europe. Weekends away from his English boarding school were often spent at the regal country estates of important policy makers and historical figures of the mid-twentieth century. When Bill was twelve years old, his father, William Patten, died, and his mother remarried the renowned columnist Joe Alsop. Patten was swept into Washington during the Kennedy years, where he bore witness to his stepfather's legendary power-brokering, and watched a very different father figure at work. In 1996, when he was forty-seven years old, Bill Patten learned that his biological father was not William Patten, but the noted English diplomat, Duff Cooper. In this quest to know his triumvirate of fathers, Bill Patten offers an unforgettable memoir. My Three Fathers is a search for identity—and a luscious chronicle of a fascinating, bygone era of American aristocracy.
Book Synopsis Patten Genealogy by : Thomas W. Baldwin
Download or read book Patten Genealogy written by Thomas W. Baldwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patten Genealogy: William Patten of Cambridge, 1635 and His Descendants England in 1907 failed to discover any definite and positive trace Of the family before coming to this country. I wish also here to express my thanks to the members of the family who in many cases have responded so freely to the inquiries I have made, and who have been ready to furnish and ascertain anything that might assist me. Some families will be found to be incomplete. This is due to two causes: one, lack Of information about parties who could furnish the material; another, neglect of parties, who were able to furnish the material, but failed to reply to inquiries made Of them; the number of these is very small. Errors very likely may be found, but in a work of this size it is difficult not to have some occur; but I trust that I have kept them at a minimum. In some cases I have found two different dates for the same event. This may account for some apparent discrepancies. In closing, perhaps, I cannot do better than to quote a paragraph I once saw in a genealogy, the author being given as B. L. Swan. He said: There is no perfect genealogical work extant, nor can one be made. The causes of error are many and difficult to avoid. Book Synopsis Growing Up Patton by : Benjamin Patton
Download or read book Growing Up Patton written by Benjamin Patton and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The grandson of the legendary World War II general George S. Patton Jr., documentary filmmaker Benjamin Patton, explores his family legacy and shares the inspirational wit and wisdom that his grandfather bestowed upon his only son and namesake. In revealing personal correspondence written between 1939 and 1945, General Patton Jr. espoused his ideals to Benjamin’s father, then a cadet at West Point. Dispensing advice on duty, heroism and honor with the same candor he used ordering the Third Army across Europe, Patton shows himself to be as dynamic a parent as a military commander. Following in those famous footsteps, Benjamin’s father became a respected and decorated hero of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Ironically, as he rose to major general, he also proved himself just as brave, flamboyant, flawed and inspiring as his father had been. A study of a great American original, Growing Up Patton features some of the pivotal figures in Benjamin’s father’s life, including Creighton Abrams, the WWII hero who became his greatest mentor; Charley Watkins, a daredevil helicopter pilot in Vietnam; Manfred Rommel, the son of German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel; Joanne Patton, the author’s mother and a resourceful fighter in her own right; and Benjamin’s mentally challenged brother, George. Growing Up Patton explores how the Patton cultural legacy lives on, and in the end, reveals how knowing the history of our heritage—famous or not—can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves. INCLUDES NEVER-BEFORE-PUBLISHED LETTERS BETWEEN GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON AND HIS SON DURING WORLD WAR II INCLUDES NEVER-BEFORE-PUBLISHED FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS
