Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathologic Myopia is a major cause of severe vision loss worldwide. The mechanisms for vision loss include cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and above all, myopic maculopathy within the posterior staphyloma. The first edition of Pathologic Myopia is one of the only current books to specifically address this disease and discusses recent developments in imaging technologies and various approaches to treatments, such as laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy, pharmaco-therapeutic injections in the vitreous, and surgery. This new edition is a timely update to the standard reference in the field, with new chapters on advanced refractive error correction, genetics, developing a classification system, and special surgical approaches for pathologic myopia. Complete with even more high-quality color images and informative tables, this book is written and edited by leaders in the field and is geared towards ophthalmologists, including residents and fellows in training, glaucoma and cataract specialists, and vitreoretinal macula experts.

Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book excerpt: The Eye: Basic Sciences in Practice provides highly accessible, concise coverage of all the essential basic science required by today's ophthalmologists and optometrists in training. It is also essential reading for those embarking on a career in visual and ophthalmic science, as well as an invaluable, current refresher for the range of practitioners working in this area. This new fourth edition has now been fully revised and updated in line with current curricula, key research developments and clinical best practice. It succinctly incorporates the massive strides being made by genetics and functional genomics based on the Human Genome Project, the new understanding of how the microbiome affects all aspects of immunology, the remarkable progress in imaging technology now applied to anatomy and neurophysiology, as well as exciting new molecular and other diagnostic methodologies now being used in microbiology and pathology. All this and more collectively brings a wealth of new knowledge to students and practitioners in the fields of ophthalmology and visual science. For the first time, this (print) edition also now comes with bonus access to the complete, fully searchable electronic text - including carefully selected additional information and new video content to further explain and expand on key concepts - making The Eye a more flexible, comprehensive and engaging learning package than ever before. The only all-embracing textbook of basic science suitable for trainee ophthalmologists, optometrists and vision scientists - other books concentrate on the individual areas such as anatomy. Attractive page design with clear, colour diagrams and text boxes make this a much more accessible book to learn from than many postgraduate textbooks. Book excerpt: This new fifth edition of Ocular Pathology maintains its reputation as an essential reference for understanding, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the eye. Offering comprehensive information on the latest clinical findings, it is unique in its full-colour atlas presentation of pathology specimens reflecting the most current topics in the field. It remains an excellent reference for practising ophthalmologists, cataract and refractive surgeons, and all individuals interested in vision care and visual sciences. Assists the reader in understanding the nature, causes and development of abnormal conditions in the eye. Updated self-assessment questions test overall understanding of the field and prepare for the Board Examination. Book is well-positioned for all levels of Eye Health Care Providers Over 240 color photographs and 930 black-and-white illustrations clearly depict hundreds of clinical entities and pathology specimens (external and slit-lamp photographs, fundus photographs, retinal angiograms, anatomic, histologic and electromicroscopic photos of all eye tissues and their diseases, along with numerous sketches and schematic illustrations of tissues). Increased number of Questions and Answers, from 35 to 50 per chapter, for a total of 550. Update on diagnosis and therapy of retinal diseases, including AIDS, and new material on indocyain green angiography. Updated sections on pathology of lens, cataract surgery, and intraocular lenses. This material has been updated to include modern small incision surgery and foldable lens technology, which has greatly expanded since 1989 and is now the preferred cataract surgical procedure of most ophthalmologists. This book continues to be the only text available which covers the pathology of cataract surgery and intraocular lenses. A new chapter has been added which represents the first comprehensive publication on clinicopathological correlation of refractive surgery, including incisional refractive surgery (RK), refractive surgery with lasers (PRK and LASIK), and refractive intraocular lenses. The information is based on the extensive experience of Dr. Apple's laboratory at the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston. The material and illustrations in this chapter have never been published elsewhere. There has been extensive update of references of all topics in the book.
