Book Synopsis Spenser and the Poetics of Pastoral by : David R. Shore
Download or read book Spenser and the Poetics of Pastoral written by David R. Shore and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1985-09-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shepheardes Calender (1579) signalled Spenser's desire to assume the role of an English Virgil and at the same time his readiness to leave behind the pastoral world of his apprenticeship and his early persona, Colin Clout. Yet Spenser was twice to return to the pastoral world of Colin Clout, first in Colin Clouts Come Home Againe (written 1591, published 1595), and then again in the sixth and last complete book of The Faerie Queene. In Spenser and the Poetics of Pastoral, David Shore considers the structure of the moral eclogues of the Calender as it defines the pastoral vision that informs and unifies the entire poem. He then examines the themes of poetic idealism and courtly corruption in Colin Clout and sees in their confrontation Spenser's questioning of the public foundations of the poet's heroic endeavour. Finally, he considers Calidore's pastoral retreat in The Faerie Queene and finds in it support for the argument that Spenser's greatest poem is essentially complete. Pastoral is a highly self-conscious genre, especially in Spenser's explorations of the imaginative world of Colin Clout. By bringing together Spenser's three versions of that world, Spenser and the Poetics of Pastoral contributes to a richer appreciation of the pastoral works themselves and to a better understanding of the shape of Spenser's literary career as a whole.

Book Synopsis Colin's Campus by : Gary M. Bouchard
Download or read book Colin's Campus written by Gary M. Bouchard and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Colin's Campus argues that pastoral poetry is inevitably a backwards-looking genre, preoccupied with the past. This preoccupation in the case of Spenser, as well as his pastoral followers, returned him to the Cambridge he had recently left behind, not the court to which he never really arrived." "Responding to the pastoral-court connection which has been at the center of nearly all historical considerations of pastoral for the past two decades, this study invites readers to seriously consider the reverse connection, that is, the academic ingredients in the pastoral world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Shakespeare in Performance by : Eric C. Brown
Download or read book Shakespeare in Performance written by Eric C. Brown and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteen essays included in this collection offer a range of contributions from both new and well-established scholars to the topic of Shakespeare and performance. From traditional studies of theatrical history and adaptation to explorations of Shakespeare’s plays in the circus, musical extravaganzas, the cinema, and drama at large, the collection embraces a number of performance spaces, times, and media. Shakespeare in Performance includes essays looking not only at sixteenth- and seventeenth-century stagings of the plays in England, but at productions of Shakespeare across time in the United States, France, Italy, Hungary, and Africa, underscoring the multiple embodiments and voices of Shakespeare’s art and including a variety of cultural approaches. The work is ultimately occupied with a number of questions generated by these continual iterations of Shakespeare. How can we write and trace what is ephemeral? To what purpose do we maintain the memory of past performances? How does the transmediation of Shakespeare inform the most basic interpretive acts? What motivates Shakespearean theatre across political borders? What kinds of meaning are produced by décor, movement, the actor’s virtuosity, the producer’s choices, or the audience’s response? Each essay thus, to some degree, describes and voices the now unseen.
Book Synopsis The Young Against the Old by : L.L. Welborn
Download or read book The Young Against the Old written by L.L. Welborn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called First Epistle of Clement has long intrigued historians of early Christianity. It responds to a crisis in the Corinthian church by enjoining an ethic of subordination especially to the presbyteroi and episkopoi, but the exact nature of that conflict has eluded scholars. L. L. Welborn sets out a clear methodology for reconstructing the historical situation behind the letter, then examines the conventions of its deliberative rhetoric, its blending of citations from the Old Testament and Paul’s letters, and its reliance on topoi from Greco-Roman civic discourse. He then presents a compelling argument for the letter’s occasion. First Clement assails a “revolt” among the youth against their elders, invoking epithets and characterizations that were, as Welborn demonstrates at length, common in political discourse supporting the status quo. At length, Welborn proposes two possible scenarios for the precise nature of the “revolt” in Corinth— a revolt possibly inspired by memories of the apostle Paul— and details the replacement of a Pauline ethic with a strict code of subordination.
Download or read book Misanthropoetics written by Robert Darcy and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misanthropoetics explores efforts by Renaissance writers to represent social flight and withdrawal as a fictional escape from the incongruous demands of culture. Through the invented term of its title, this book investigates the literary misanthrope in a number of key examples from Shakespeare, Jonson, Spenser, and the satirical milieu of Marston to exemplify the seemingly unresolvable paradoxes of social life. In Shakespeare's England a burgeoning urban population and the codification of social controls drove a new imaginary of revolt and flight in the figure of the literary misanthrope. This figure of disillusionment became an experiment in protesting absurd social demands, pitting friendship and family against prudent economies, testimonies of durable love against erosions of historical time, and stable categories of gender against the breakdown and promiscuity of language. Misanthropoetics chronicles the period's own excoriating critique of the illusion of resolution fostered within a social world beleaguered by myriad pressures and demands. This study interrogates form as a means not toward order but toward the impasse of irresolution, to detecting and declaring the social function of life as inherently incongruous. Robert Darcy applies questions of phenomenology and psychoanalysis, deconstruction and chaos theory to observe how the great deployers of literary form lost confidence that it could adhere to clear and stable rules of engagement, even as they tried desperately to shape and preserve it.

Book Synopsis The Shepheardes Calender by : Lynn Staley Johnson
Download or read book The Shepheardes Calender written by Lynn Staley Johnson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shepheardes Calender is the poem that launched Edmund Spenser's career and changed the direction of English poetry. In this reappraisal, Lynn Staley Johnson demonstrates that Spenser himself made a self-conscious effort to create a new literature, a new esthetic for a new era. Drawing upon a wide range of primary sources, she places the poem in its literary, social, political , and cultural context, contributing to our understanding of the relationship between Spenser and his times. She pays particular attention to the emergence of the myth of Elizabeth and of England during the first half of Elizabeth's reign and the ways in which the young Spenser manipulated the concerns and issues of the time, transforming popular culture into literary expression. By its active engagement with both the present and the past, the Calender suggests Spenser's conception of poetry as informed dialogue designed for social work, offering a reinterpretation of the relationship between the poet and his community. Choosing not to be circumscribed by the voices of his significant historical and literary past, the Calender proclaims the poet, not as transmitter or mediator, but as an active and shaping force, capable of remaking the present by offering his age a picture of a new and potentially more glorious reality. Johnson seeks to bridge the gap between the literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance by linking Spenser's strategies and themes to those of his medieval forebears, especially Chaucer. Both Edmund Spenser and his enigmatic Calender stand facing two ways, back into the age dubbed &"middle&" and forward, hailing the new; as it's study demonstrates, only by bringing these views into a single focus can we begin to appreciate the radical and innovative nature of a poem that for many heralds the renaissance of English poetry.
