Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * A nostalgic look at the most beautiful traditional cafes in Belgium and the stories they harbor"North or South, the soul of Belgium is in its cafés. I don't know of any book that captures their soul more beautifully and accurately than this one." - Joe Stange, CAMRA's Good Beer Guide Belgium This book is an ode to Belgium's traditional beer cafés, to their landlords and -ladies, and to the regular customers who have become part of the interior. It is also a plea to handle the café patrimony of Belgium with the greatest care. Because we have been taking these little cafés for granted for far too long and now their existence has become fragile, despite the fact that they are an important part of our social and cultural heritage. Regula Ysewijn is a Belgian culinary historian, writer, and photographer. She focuses on food and social history or Britain and the Low countries and consults for organisations such as the UK's National Trust, TV programmes and museums. Ysewijn is the author of six books among which: Pride and Pudding and Oats in the North, Wheat From the South have received international acclaim. She is also a judge on the Flemish version of the Great British Bake Off. For this book Regula visited 45 traditional cafés in Belgium. From the oldest café in the country (it opened in 1515) to the oldest Belgian café landlady, Juliette, who is 96. She visited cafés with beautiful Art Deco interiors, and cafés with the charm and warmth of a living room. In each of these establishments she talked to the landlords and -ladies and to the people who have become part or the soul of these cafés, and she managed to capture all of this in beautiful, touching photographs.
Book Synopsis The Past and the Future of Belgium (Classic Reprint) by : Albert J. Carnoy
Download or read book The Past and the Future of Belgium (Classic Reprint) written by Albert J. Carnoy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past and the Future of Belgium Belgium has been placed in special prominence by her situation at the center of the greatest fight in history and by her noble attitude during a long period of indescribable sufferings. Many a name of her cities and villages has been associated for ever with deeds of glory or shame. Many a name of her sons has been added to the list of heroes who have suffered for ideals dear to mankind. The German intrigues as well as the discussions at the Peace Conference have acquainted the whole world with special aspects of Belgian nationality and Belgian politics. But all this has been very fragmentary information, and numerous are the persons in America who have the most friendly interest for Belgium but know very little of that country, her aspects, her inhabitants, the essential facts of her history, the main features of her national character. Particulars as to the amount of destruction wrought by the Germans and about the part played by Belgium in the war are also very desirable; but above all, in connection with the restoration of the country and with its future, it will be helpful to provide reliable and clear information to all those who may come in contact with a nation that has now indelible bonds of friendship with the United States. Both countries will remain associated during the period of re construction and it is desirable that they know one another. This is the idea which has inspired the present booklet which in a condensed form treats of Belgium, her glorious past, her ideals, her part in the war, her problems in the near future, her possibilities, her place in the new world. Book Synopsis The History and Future of Technology by : Robert U. Ayres
Download or read book The History and Future of Technology written by Robert U. Ayres and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent physicist and economist, Robert Ayres, examines the history of technology as a change agent in society, focusing on societal roots rather than technology as an autonomous, self-perpetuating phenomenon. With rare exceptions, technology is developed in response to societal needs that have evolutionary roots and causes. In our genus Homo, language evolved in response to a need for our ancestors to communicate, both in the moment, and to posterity. A band of hunters had no chance in competition with predators that were larger and faster without this type of organization, which eventually gave birth to writing and music. The steam engine did not leap fully formed from the brain of James Watt. It evolved from a need to pump water out of coal mines, driven by a need to burn coal instead of firewood, in turn due to deforestation. Later, the steam engine made machines and mechanization possible. Even quite simple machines increased human productivity by a factor of hundreds, if not thousands. That was the Industrial Revolution. If we count electricity and the automobile as a second industrial revolution, and the digital computer as the beginning of a third, the world is now on the cusp of a fourth revolution led by microbiology. These industrial revolutions have benefited many in the short term, but devastated the Earths ecosystems. Can technology save the human race from the catastrophic consequences of its past success? That is the question this book will try to answer.

Book Synopsis From Past to Future: Graßmann's Work in Context by : Hans-Joachim Petsche

This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Hermann Graßmann (1809-1877), an interdisciplinary conference was held in Potsdam, Germany, and in Graßmann's hometown Szczecin, Poland. The idea of the conference was to present a multi-faceted picture of Graßmann, and to uncover the complexity of the factors that were responsible for his creativity. The conference demonstrated not only the very influential reception of his work at the turn of the 20th century, but also the unexpected modernity of his ideas, and their continuing development in the 21st century. This book contains 37 papers presented at the conference. They investigate the significance of Graßmann's work for philosophical as well as for scientific and methodological questions, for comparative philology in general and for Indology in particular, for psychology, physiology, religious studies, musicology, didactics, and, last but not least, mathematics. In addition, the book contains numerous illustrations and English translations of original sources, which are published here for the first time. These include life histories of Graßmann (written by his son Justus) and of his brother Robert (written by Robert himself), as well as the paper "On the concept and extent of pure theory of number'' by Justus Graßmann (the father).
