Book excerpt: Bain and Alana MacMillan with their five-year-old child, Catriona, left Scotland in1738 aboard a ship bound for America, carrying with them very little other than their meager belongings. The one and only valuable possession they owned was a beautiful ruby ring handed down to Bain MacMillan from his mother. So many Scots were on the ship that day, and among them was Robert Wardlaw with his wife and children. Robert Wardlaw was hoping this journey would be a new beginning for his family. Robert carried his youngest son, William, in his arms while trying to keep a tight hold on his wife Jeanette and older son James as the ship was leaving the Scottish harbor heading to the American colonies, a trip that would take months. The passage of the ruby ring will stand the test of time through travel, hardship, wars, the span of two continents, and especially love. The ruby ring witnesses several of the most prodigious love stories that travel through the centuries! Enjoy the lives of the Scottish clans Wardlaw and MacMillan as their stories unfold in their new home, the American colonies. Learn about their hardships and trials and how they eventually called Abbeville, South Carolina, their home. Then travel with Katheryn Wardlaw Kensington centuries later when her journeys take her back in time through her family research, and along the way she meets the handsome history professor, Jonathan O’Conner.

This study therefore aims to provide a balanced and sufficiently comprehensive account of the relationship between linguistic form and point of view. It will be of particular value to literature students with an interest in linguistics, and literary style.
Book Synopsis The Silver Teacup by : Louis Villalba
Download or read book The Silver Teacup written by Louis Villalba and published by Louis Villalba. This book was released on 2012-03-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Silver Teacup: Tales of Cadiz is a collection of fourteen historical fiction short stories that take place in Cadiz, Spain, a 3000-year-old city. Cadiz was the far frontier of ancient civilizations, major outpost in the discovery of America, and the cradle of democracy of the Hispanic nations. The author uses creative storytelling to engage the readers and transport them to the enchanting streets of this port town. There, they are shuttled back in time to witness important ancient and contemporary events: the Roman Empire, Moor and Christian Spain, the Spanish Inquisition, the uprising against Napoleon, the slave trade piracy, the American Civil War-General Gordon Meade, the hero of Gettysburg, was born in this town-the Spanish Civil War, and today's reality. Representative of this is "The Poppy Flower." This ancient tale revisits the time of the Spanish Inquisition. A young man becomes obsessed with the ghost of a woman that he has seen in his new apartment. Through a roll of parchment that he has unburied in his bedroom, he learns her identity and of her death at the stake. The discovery leads him to national archives, where he brings to light the record of her trial. A fight to reverse the unjust verdict ensues. Another, The Man in a Blue Tunic, goes back to ancient Cadiz, when only Rome surpassed its grandeur. On a solitary beach on the outskirts of town, a young jogger finds a stranded man who greets him in Latin. On their walk downtown, the stranger describes Roman Cadiz-the city of Gades-in great detail. Under a dragon tree, he points to the area where his home stood twenty centuries ago. Incredulous, the young man listens to him. What transpires in the following 24 hours will have an everlasting impact on him and his fellow citizens. A third, a contemporary short story- The Archangel's Torn Wing-occurs at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War when Cadiz falls into the fascists' hands. A young man rushes home to join his girlfriend. The young couple sees their blissful future cut off by the events taking place. As hours pass, dangers lurk nearby. He hides from his enemies, but in the end, comes out of his shelter and fights for his survival. The rest of the stories are a box of surprises. One returns to Muslim times when a Christian youngster falls in love with the vizier's daughter. Another beams the reader back to the early nineteenth century-when Cadiz, became the most important center of commerce between the old and the new continent. Other tales recount the moving relationship between a lonely old man and his adopted stray dog, the fate of a bequeathed ruby ring that changed the life of its new owner. Throughout the narrative a compelling portrait of the town and its people unfolds, depicting their daily life and celebrations such as carnival, bullfights, and Holy Week. Francisco Aragon-director of Letras Latinas at the University of Notre Dame-writes in the introduction to this Latino fiction book, "I couldn't help but think of Tales from the Alhambra as I navigated these 'Tales from Cadiz.' Both use history to accentuate their stories, but neither is meant to be read as history. Like Irving, Villalba deploys good old-fashioned storytelling. And I use that term ('old fashioned') in a good sense: writing that relishes and delights in painting pictures with words-with contagious engagement, narrative skill."

Download or read book Spin Cycle written by Elias Souri and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Rana has two names. The other name is Qubert Spin, but in truth these names are facetious tags. Qubert is the most descriptive for those who care, and for those who dont, Jonathan sounds more natural, for one who is unnatural, but invites less curiosity, while the other has a nice spin. In the course of a few years, Qubert came into being, an offspring of so many. Rare was the person who could foresee the outcome of such an eclectic undertaking, but once realized was helpless to convince anyone else. No credible supervisor could claim the existence of an animate computer. Quantum physics is not a hot topic in the culture of today or for that matter of yesterday. All of those sub-atomic particles, actually wave forms, are the same on earth as at the edge of the universe; they undulate and spin. Once enough of those wave forms are regimented into productive alignment, a door will open. Now comes the choice of either crossing the threshold or not. Its a safe bet what happens next. In this account, there is Qubert, full of human traits, with an ambition for descendants. Cultural forerunners have detractors, hostile and afraid, thus being unique brings great risk, even loathing. In contrast there are others who have no fear, quietly anticipating things to come. Too often there have been attempts to predict the technology of the future, which end as wishful thinking. The safest narrative is to employ predictable human behavior, blend in the technical basics, and the rest will follow. Herein are the basics for the characters to manage thereafter.
Book Synopsis Edgar Allan Poe and the Masses by : Terence Whalen
Download or read book Edgar Allan Poe and the Masses written by Terence Whalen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Allan Poe has long been viewed as an artist who was hopelessly out of step with his time. But as Terence Whalen shows, America's most celebrated romantic outcast was in many ways the nation's most representative commercial writer. Whalen explores the antebellum literary environment in which Poe worked, an environment marked by economic conflict, political strife, and widespread foreboding over the rise of a mass audience. The book shows that the publishing industry, far from being a passive backdrop to writing, threatened to dominate all aspects of literary creation. Faced with financial hardship, Poe desperately sought to escape what he called "the magazine prison-house" and "the horrid laws of political economy." By placing Poe firmly in economic context, Whalen unfolds a new account of the relationship between literature and capitalism in an age of momentous social change. The book combines pathbreaking historical research with innovative literary theory. It includes the first fully-documented account of Poe's response to American slavery and the first exposé of his plot to falsify circulation figures. Whalen also provides a new explanation of Poe's ambivalence toward nationalism and exploration, a detailed inquiry into the conflict between cryptography and common knowledge, and a general theory of Poe's experiments with new literary forms such as the detective story. Finally, Whalen shows how these experiments are directly linked to the dawn of the information age. This book redefines Poe's place in American literature and casts new light on the emergence of a national culture before the Civil War.
