This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive archival research in six countries and intensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the history of the village of Nkholongue on the eastern (Mozambican) shores of Lake Malawi from the time of its formation in the 19th century to the present day. The study uses Nkholongue as a microhistorical lens to examine such diverse topics as the slave trade, the spread of Islam, colonization, subsistence production, counter-insurgency, decolonization, civil war, ecotourism, and matriliny. Thereby, the book attempts to reflect as much as possible on the generalizability and (global) comparability of local findings by framing analyses in historiographical discussions that aim to go beyond the regional or national level. Although the chapters of the book deal with very different topics, they are united by a common interest in the social history of rural Africa in the longue durée. Contrary to persistent clichés of rural inertia in Africa, the book as a whole underscores the profound changeability of social conditions and relations in Nkholongue over the years and highlights how people’s room for maneuver kept changing as a result of the Winds of History, the frequent and often violent ruptures brought to the village from outside.

Download or read book Succeeding John Bull written by D. Cameron Watt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-03-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the Wiles lectures for 1981 delivered at the Queen's University of Belfast in October 1981. It is not a history of Anglo-American relations in the century; its theme deals with how the United States of America came to replace Britain as the primary world and oceanic power confronting a grouping of land-based continental powers, the position Britain occupied throughout the nineteenth century. This theme is examined in the light of how the process of replacement was conceived and perceived by those groups which had the primary responsibility for the formulation and conduct of foreign relations in each of the two powers, Britain and America. The author, whose earlier study of 1965 of the British foreign-policy-making elites pioneered this approach in Britain, argues the existence and continuity over much of this century of similar groups in the United States.

Download or read book Politics After Hitler written by Daniel E. Rogers and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1995-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the role of the Americans, British, and French in constructing a system of political parties in defeated Germany after 1945. Drawing on extensive research, documents how the allies arrived without a plan, but hastily established licensing for parties, by which they disempowered any views they considered destabilizing, such as reactionary, hypernationalist, and communist. Concludes that the effort was totally successful. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
