Book excerpt: Humanity has reached the twentieth millennium and has stagnated. Mankind reached for the stars and captured ten systems but then lost interest in pressing forward. Man has sub-light interstellar travel but real-time interstellar communications using telepathic twins, with a twin on Earth and the sibling on each planet. Given a great standard of living, what was the purpose of pushing forward? Then the bugs appeared and invaded Ursa Major, one of the ten human worlds. The humans become refugees trapped on their own planet. Mankind is unable to summon the interest in taking the fight back to the bugs, with only a token effort to construct an interstellar ship to track the bugs when they leave the system. However, one man decides the effort is not adequate. F'HR, the leader in the development of a new faster than light (FTL) system, discovers another planet of humanoids which are inferior, but have a faster rate of advancement. He names the system Pandora. F'HR pirates the FTL system to send a probe with a telepathic embryo called I'SU to help guide the development of the junior species. He then raises the telepath's sibling and plans to hijack the interstellar ship (which he names Paradox) to travel to Pandora. Due to last minute setbacks, F'HR is unable to make the flight and his adopted daughter and telepath, S'PR, leads the mission. The probe arrives at Pandora and I'SU is raised by Pandorans. Assisted by an orbiting holographic projector, an artificial intelligence armed with Earth's history as a guide and a mini-robot named 'Rover' with medical abilities, the human works to push the Pandorans toward advancement. I'SU uses all his skills to keep the stubborn Pandorans on the road to true civilization. Providing timely influence over millennia, I'SU has his adopted world ready when Paradox approaches. After recruiting the Pandorans, Paradox journeys to Ursa Major to battle the bugs. As the Pandorans prepare to fight the bugs, S'PR finds herself in a maze of emotions and conflicting priorities. Can S'PR and the Pandorans defeat the invaders? Will the Pandoran Paradox be fulfilled or is F'HR's grand scheme doomed to failure?

Parts one and two consider, respectively, archaic Greek, and Hellenistic and Roman, epics. Contributors explore the representations of Pandora in Hesiod, and Homeric automata such as Hephaestus' wheeled tripods, the Phaeacian king Alcinous' golden and silver guard dogs, and even the Trojan Horse. Later examples cover Artificial Intelligence and automation (including Talos) in the Argonautica of Apollonius and Valerius Flaccus, and Pygmalion's ivory woman in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Book excerpt: This book grows out of a longstanding fascination with the uncanny status of the mother in literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, film, and photography. The mother haunts Freud's writings on art and literature, emerges as an obscure stumbling block in his metapsychological accounts of the psyche, and ultimately undermines his patriarchal accounts of the Oedipal complex as a foundation for human culture. The figure of the mother becomes associated with some of psychoanalysis's most unruly and enigmatic concepts (the uncanny, anxiety, the primal scene, the crypt, and magical thinking). Read in relation to deconstructive approaches to the work of mourning, this book shows how the maternal function challenges traditional psychoanalytic models of the subject, troubles existing systems of representation, and provides a fertile source for nonmimetic, nonlinear conceptions of time and space. The readings in this book examine the uncanny properties of the maternal function in psychoanalysis, technology, and literature in order to show that the event of birth is radically unthinkable and often becomes expressed through uncontrollable repetitions that exceed the bounds of any subject. The maternal body often serves as an unacknowledged reference point for modern media technologies such as photography and the telephone, which attempt to mimic its reproductive properties. To the extent that these technologies aim to usurp the maternal function, they are often deployed as a means of regulating or warding off anxieties that are provoked by the experience of loss that real separation from the mother invariably demands. As the incarnation of our first relation to the strange exile of language, the mother is inherently a literary figure, whose primal presence in literary texts opens us up to the unspeakable relation to our own birth and, in so doing, helps us give birth to new and fantasmatic images of futures that might otherwise have remained unimaginable.
