Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Painters of the School of Ferrara In the following pages I have attempted to give a brief account of the famous school of painting that originated in Ferrara about the middle of the fifteenth century, and thence not only extended its influence to the other cities that owned the sway of the House of Este, but spread over all Emilia and Romagna, produced Correggio in Parma, and even shared in the making of Raphael at Urbino. Correggio himself is not included: he is too great a figure in Italian art to be treated as merely the member of a local school; and he has already been the subject of a separate monograph in this series. The classical volumes of Girolamo Baruffaldi are still indispensable to the student of the artistic history of Ferrara. It was, however, Morelli who first revealed the importance and significance of the Ferrarese school in the evolution of Italian art; and, although a few of his conclusions and conjectures have to be abandoned or modified in the light of later researches and discoveries, his work must ever remain our starting-point. Book excerpt: Dosso's rich color schemes are akin to those of his fellow North Italian Titian; he learned something about innovative composition from Raphael and about the force of the body from Michelangelo. But his paintings have a very individual appeal. In leafy natural surroundings containing an array of animals and heavenly bodies, events unfold that are often enigmatic, enacted by characters whose interrelationships elude definition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the art and life of the Ferrarese painter Ercole de Roberti (1456-1496)). Roberti's style was marked by the fascinating peculiarities characteristic of the Ferrarese school of the fifteenth century, while we can also see the influence on his style of artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Netherlandish engravers. He worked for years in Bologna before settling permanently in 1486 in Ferrara, where he became the official court painter for the Este. An introductory section includes a brief history and description of Ferrarese art of the Quattrocentro. The text includes an outline of Roberti's career, a discussion of his works, and a look at the artist's critical fortunes. A catalogue raisonne and a catalogue of rejected attributions supplement the text. A transcription of all of the known documents indicates the full range of Roberti's work. Roberti's works were highly prized by his contemporaries and later Renaissance writers, and his paintings and drawings are made with fine skill and craftsmanship. It is hoped that this book will help to acquaint the reader with Roberti's rich and inventive art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, the New Orleans murder rate exploded. In 1996, 350 people were killed—the highest number in the city’s history, and the highest rate in the nation. In response to this crisis, gallery owner and artist Jonathan Ferrara and artist Brian Borrello, launched a powerful project: Guns in the Hands of Artists. Over sixty artists, including painters, glass artists, sculptors, photographers, and poets, used decommissioned guns taken off the city streets via a gun buyback program to express a thought, make a statement, open a discussion, and to stimulate thinking about guns and gun violence in America. As gun violence continues to devastate the nation on a daily basis, Guns in the Hands of Artists reemerged in 2012 as a community-based social activist art project that has since traveled to six cities across the US. Using art as a mirror for life and interweaving the works of thirty diverse artists with the voices of seventeen national thought leaders, this book is an important outgrowth of the exhibition and an extension of its efforts to employ art as a vehicle for dialogue, as a call to action, and—ultimately—as an agent of change. Barry, Dan Cameron, Lucia McBath, Harry Shearer, Jonathan Ferrara, Brian Borrello, Maria Cuomo Cole, Michael Waldman, E. Ethelbert Miller, Mayor Mitchell J.
