Growing up without a father in her life and a mother who didn't know how to show her love forced her to go out into the world unprepared for the realities of it. She became a mother at the age of eighteen by a man who was six years older with children. Although she never felt love at home, she still opened herself up to the possibilities of being loved and loving someone in return. That search led her to a young man whom she eventually spent eight years of her life with and shared two more children together. During their time together she suffered from mental, physical, and emotional abuse, causing her to finally get up enough courage to leave him. Single again, Karla started doing things that she never had the opportunity to do while with such a controlling man. She started to drink and go out more, which eventually caused her to make decisions that affected and disrupted her household. She met a few men and settled down with one that caught her eye. While trying to pick up the pieces of her life, she started doing a little better and was looking forward to her future without the hurt and pain that she suffered through for years. Trying to better her relationship with her siblings, she invited them to her apartment so that they could spend time together, but nothing would prepare herself for what lay ahead. One night with her family had turned her whole world upside down and left her fighting for her freedom. With everything that she had already gone through, nobody would have ever expected for her to end up in jail, not even her. Leaving behind her children, Karla had to adjust to her new life behind bars. There was no turning back now, she had to fight harder than she had ever fought before. During that fight, she was sexually assaulted by a male deputy that worked at the courthouse. Leaving her with distrust for the same people put in place to protect her, she started to give up and accept things as they were, but God didn't want that for her, so He gave her the vision and sign that she had been waiting for. After being away for almost two years, Karla was released back out into the same cold, cruel world that she was abruptly taken from and had to start rebuilding what was torn down. She also needed to repair the broken relationship with her children, but none of that would come easy for her. Battling depression, being homeless, and running into people that had taken advantage of her instead of helping only made her stronger, and after two years of parole Karla packed the few things she had along with her children and headed for a new life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, leaving behind everything that was meant to break her and starting a new life for herself and children.

Book excerpt: What exactly is happiness? Can we measure it? Why are some people happy and others not? And is there a drug that could eliminate all unhappiness? People all over the world, and throughout the ages, have thought about happiness, argued about its nature, and, most of all, desired it. But why do we have such a strong instinct to pursue happiness? And if happiness is good in itself, why haven't we simply evolved to be happier? Daniel Nettle uses the results of the latest psychological studies to ask what makes people happy and unhappy, what happiness really is, and to examine our urge to achieve it. Along the way we look at brain systems, at mind-altering drugs, and how happiness is now marketed to us as a commodity. Nettle concludes that while it may be unrealistic to expect lasting happiness, our evolved tendency to seek happiness drives us to achieve much that is worthwhile in itself. What is more, it seems to be not your particular circumstances that define whether you are happy so much as your attitude towards life. Happiness gives us the latest scientific insights into the nature of our feelings of well-being, and what these imply for how we might live our lives.

They are either embarrassed to talk about what's going on, or fear no one will believe them. I, Sharonda Muse, am one of those many people. From childhood into my adult life, I experienced sexually, mental, and physical abuse by the hands of people that were supposed to love me. For decades, I chose to self medicate which took me down a very dark path. My body became exhausted, and I was mentally drained! One summer morning, the Holy Spirt entered my body, and I felt a feeling that words can't describe. SlowIy but surely, I began to come out of the darkness, and worked on getting my life together. God never gave up on me, and because of Him, I have become the woman I am today.

Book excerpt: To all those who hide their pain behind a smile, may this story help you defeat your demons. A sunny day, a smile full of joy, a melody made of the chirping of birds and the rustling of a river bed. A moonless night, a bed of pain, a dark and silent room that, every night, becomes a deafening melody, a composition of screams, nightmares and demons that tears the soul apart. Three characters so different, but so similar: Cameron, sad eyes and breathtaking smiles, a homosexual boy not at peace with his sexuality because of the ignorance of his family and society; Jocelyn, eyes full of joy and smiles full of pain, an obese girl derided by her peers; finally, Trevis, cold heart and warm eyes, free to be what he wants to be. But do people without fears exist? People without pain in their smiles? The stories of these three characters intersect profoundly until each becomes the salvation of the other. Friendship and love merge so deeply that you can no longer tell the difference. Giuseppe De Martino was born in Naples on 9 July, 1996. He soon discovered a strong passion for acting, writing and singing, quickly becoming a professional in the world of entertainment. After graduating from drama school, he won the 20th edition of the Emily Dickinson International Literary Prize. He has collaborated on various theatre and television projects, and, at the age of 21, he published his debut novel, The Pain in a Smile. After critical acclaim for the social issues discussed in the book, he decided to translate the novel into English. He now lives in the UK, and he always tries, with his pen and his art, to create a better world.

It is not an autobiography with an ordinary beginning and a predictable ending; instead the book depicts a series of emotions occurring in the author's life and how she alters herself from a self-pitying girl into a strong, resilient woman. It will enlighten the readers on not to depend on anyone and become the superhero in their own story. A hard but comforting lesson to learn – Loving and forgiving your own self is important because if today you won’t do it, tomorrow you’ll see others taking advantage of your weaknesses. No matter how many mistakes you are making in your life, if you are willing to learn from everything you go through, sooner or later, you will become the best version of yourself and that without anyone else’s support.

Book excerpt: I chose to write this particular book, mainly to prove something to myself and other people just how a person such as myself can progress in their lives. After surviving both physical and sexual abuse in my past from a family member. Having to live with the turmoil of placing my children in the care of other families. My worst nightmare of which I had to come to terms with, was when my son Daniel was killed in a road traffic accident in 2001. I chose to write all of my thoughts and emotions down, instead of having any kind of councelling. As each day passes by, I know that with my partner who is so understanding, that I can overcome anything that life chooses to throw at me. Although, I do not allow my emotions to be seen, as each day the first thing I do is put my make up on, which is what I would call my "mask".This to me makes life so much easier as nobody has any idea of what I am thinking or feeling. Each day I write on a calender the events of my daily routine. That is how it became to be written in diary form, and then even I could see the progress I had made in my life.Should I ever be concerned about something, or not be too certain of anything, I think of what my late son Daniel would have told me.He would of said "go for it mum".

Book excerpt: As part of her recovery from a devastating car accident, Grace Thomas embarks on a surprise cruise booked by her husband, Cameron. The accident still haunts Grace and she is a little anxious to be leaving her family, but excited to fulfil what has been a life-long dream of hers - cruising around the Mediterranean with some girlfriends - even if her husband's secretary, Chantelle is tagging along for the trip. Maybe this is a chance to start a fresh with this woman. But Chantelle appears to be everywhere Grace turns, and her instincts can’t all be wrong. Something is off. Not only does Chantelle resemble Grace, it soon becomes clear that she is desperate for Cameron’s attention, but at what lengths would she go to get it? Were Cameron's motives for sending Grace away on this cruise as admirable as she first thought and is her husband's relationship with the ever-present Chantelle as platonic as he claims? Grace's journey of self-discovery suddenly begins to feel rather sinister. Her friends are distant, Chantelle is incessantly playing with her mind, and Grace feels more lost and alone than ever. Then, she discovers that her husband has told the children she’s died. Grace's world is shattered. Everything she knows has been a lie and the truth has devastating consequences for everyone... After twenty-five years, they’re contemplating divorce . . . just as soon as their youngest son graduates from high school. But then an accident erases part of Noelle's memory. Though her other injuries are minor, she doesn’t remember Eli, their children, or the tragedy that has ripped their family apart. What’s more, Noelle is shocked that her life has turned out nothing like she dreamed it would. As she tries to regain her memory and slowly steps into her role as a wife and mother, Eli helps her readjust to daily life with sometimes-hilarious, sometimes-heartwarming results. But can she fall in love again with a man she can’t remember? Will their secrets destroy them . . . or has erasing the past given them a chance for a future?

Three teens, three stories—all interconnected through their parents’ family relationships. As the adults pull away, caught up in their own dilemmas, the lives of the teens begin to tilt... Mikayla, almost eighteen, is over-the-top in love with Dylan, who loves her back. But what happens to that love when Mikayla gets pregnant the summer before their senior year—and decides to keep the baby? Shane turns sixteen that same summer and falls hard in love with his first boyfriend, Alex, who happens to be HIV positive. Shane has lived for four years with his little sister’s impending death. Can he accept Alex’s love, knowing that his life, too, will be shortened? Harley is fourteen—a good girl searching for new experiences, especially love from an older boy.
