Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genealogies of Fiction is a study of gender, dynastic politics, and intertextuality in medieval and renaissance chivalric epic, focused on Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso. Relying on the direct study of manuscripts and incunabula, this project challenges the fixed distinction between medieval and early modern texts and reclaims medieval popular epic as a key source for the Furioso. Tracing the formation of the character of the warrior woman, from the Amazon to Bradamante, the book analyzes the process of gender construction in early modern Italy. By reading the tension between the representations of women as fighters, lovers, and mothers, this study shows how the warrior woman is a symbolic center for the construction of legitimacy in the complex web of fears and expectations of the Northern Italian Renaissance court.

Book excerpt: The Revelation of Jesus the Christ ends by assuring its readers that He is coming “soon” (Rev.22:7). John quotes Jesus’s repeated statement that He will come soon (Rev.1:1; 22:7, 12, 20). Indeed, Jesus did come “soon” to John. Physical life on earth is short for everyone. And the judgments upon first century Jerusalem also came “soon.” But, the text apparently should be read as saying He’s coming “quickly.” It again speaks to the speed of His coming, not the timing of “when.” He comes suddenly. He comes unexpectedly to the unsaved; as unexpected as a sudden heart attack (Mt.24:42-44; 25:13; Lk.12:39). But, He is welcomed by the saved that are always in fellowship with Him and looking forward to their union with Him (Jn.17:24; Heb.9:28; Lk.12:43; 21:27; 1Thes.5:4). John declares: “The Spirit and the bride (Church) say come”; and he promises “whoever wishes” can take the free gift of the water-of-life (Rev.22:17). The Church on earth yearns for the final “wedding feast” (Mt.22:2; 25:10). John again states that God will judge; and he adds a warning about adding or subtracting from the original text of this book, i.e. The Revelation (Rev.22:19). The text within The Revelation then ends with a benediction: “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen”

Book excerpt: The Works of Eugene Field is a collection of poetry and essays by American author Eugene Field, originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1896 under the title The Writings in Prose and Verse of Eugene Field. Known for his children's poetry, especially the light-hearted "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," Field was a journalist who found his niche in poetry and humor writing. The original collection, published after Field's death and including artwork and letters from the author, is a charming set of books compiling all his works. Republished here for young readers and collectors of Americana, The Works of Eugene Field is sure to delight audiences young and old. Volume V of this twelve-volume set, The Holy Cross and Other Tales, is a collection of short stories, including "The Holy Cross." Five tales were added after it was originally issued, meant to demonstrate some of Field's best work from his later years. It also includes an Introduction from American poet and essayist Edmund Clarence Stedman. EUGENE FIELD (1850-1895) was an American author known for his humorous essays and children's poetry. Interested in many subjects and unable to decide what to do with his life, Field attended three colleges-Williams College, Knox College, and University of Missouri-tried his hand at acting, law, and journalism, and traveled Europe before meeting his wife and becoming city editor for the St. Joseph Gazette in St. Joseph, Missouri. He wrote and edited for several newspapers, establishing himself as a humor writer and publishing poetry. He died of a heart-attack at 45.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an investigation of the foundation and evolution of romance in Iceland. The narrative type arose from the introduction of French narratives into the alien literary environment of Iceland and the acculturation of the import to indigenous literary traditions. The study focuses on the oldest Icelandic copies of three chansons de geste and four of the earliest indigenous romances, both types transmitted in an Icelandic codex from around 1300. The impact of the translated epic poems on the origin and development of the Icelandic romances was considerable, yet they have been largely neglected by scholars in favour of the courtly romances. This study attests the role played by the epic poems in the composition of romance in Iceland, which introduced the motifs of the aggressive female wooer and of Christian-heathen conflict.

Book excerpt: Newly available in paperback, this collection of essays, written by distinguished international scholars, focuses on the structural influence of Italian literature, culture and society at large on Shakespeare's dramatic canon. Exploring recent methodological trends coming from Anglo-American new historicism and cultural materialism and innovative analyses of intertextuality, the volume's four thematic sections deal with 'Theory and practice', 'Culture and tradition', 'Text and ideology' and 'Stage and spectacle'.In their own views and critical perspectives, the individual chapters throw fresh light on the dramatist's pliable technique of dramatic construction and break new ground in the field of influence studies and intertextuality as a whole.A rich bibliography of secondary literature and a detailed index round off the volume.
