Book Synopsis The Pacific Solution by : Susan Metcalfe

Book excerpt: The Australian Government said frankly, we don't want to accept you, you are never going to get accepted. On the other hand, it wasn't safe for us to go back home as well. It's like you are in space, disconnected from the earth and the sky, uncertain of having a future. Between 2001 and 2008, Australia detained a total of 1,637 asylum-seekers in offshore camps in Papua New Guinea and Nauru. This Pacific Solution policy caused undeniable damage to vulnerable people seeking sanctuary in Australia. An Amnesty International representative described the Pacific camps as a kind of Dante-like scenario or Fellini-like scenario where you have a lot of people who are just milling around, dressed up with nowhere to go, just waiting. The camps became breeding grounds for relentless anxieties and severe depressions. Some people took medication, others turned to alcohol, hunger strikes and self-harm - measures of last resort for those without hope. In The Pacific Solution, Susan Metcalfe brings together accounts of her own visits to Nauru, extensive interviews conducted with refugees and advocates, media reports, long-distance correspondence and new research. She engages with the stories of people who, after years of exile in Pacific countries, are now our neighbours, workmates and friends, and for whom Australia is now home. How, she asks, can we justify what we have done? We are challenged to ensure that the political policy that underpinned such trauma remains dead and buried forever.

Book excerpt: If you listen to some politicians and voices in the media, you might well believe that asylum seekers are ‘illegal’. You might think that they should wait their turn in the so-called ‘queue’. You might think that they pose a potential threat to our national security, and that the government is right to keep them from our shores. Or you might take a humanitarian stance, believing that drastic border protection policies, though harsh in effect, are necessary to deter asylum seekers from endangering their lives on risky boat journeys to Australia. However logical these conclusions might seem, the problem is that they are based on widespread misunderstandings about why and how people seek asylum, and what Australia’s international legal obligations are. This book rejects spin and panic to provide a straightforward and balanced account of Australia’s asylum policies in light of international law. Written for a general audience, it explains who asylum seekers and refugees are, what the law is, and what policies like offshore processing, mandatory detention, and turning back boats mean in practice. Using real-life examples, this book reminds us of the human impact of Australia’s policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of Australia’s richest literary award, No Friend but the Mountains is Kurdish-Iranian journalist and refugee Behrouz Boochani’s account of his detainment on Australia’s notorious Manus Island prison. Composed entirely by text message, this work represents the harrowing experience of stateless and imprisoned refugees and migrants around the world. In 2013, Kurdish-Iranian journalist Behrouz Boochani was illegally detained on Manus Island, a refugee detention centre off the coast of Australia. He has been there ever since. This book is the result. Laboriously tapped out on a mobile phone and translated from the Farsi. It is a voice of witness, an act of survival. A lyric first-hand account. A cry of resistance. A vivid portrait of five years of incarceration and exile. Winner of the Victorian Prize for Literature, No Friend but the Mountains is an extraordinary account — one that is disturbingly representative of the experience of the many stateless and imprisoned refugees and migrants around the world. “Our government jailed his body, but his soul remained that of a free man.” — From the Foreword by Man Booker Prize–winning author Richard Flanagan
Book Synopsis Australian Refugee Policy and Its Impacts on Pacific Island Countries by : Brian Opeskin
Download or read book Australian Refugee Policy and Its Impacts on Pacific Island Countries written by Brian Opeskin and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refugees present an immense challenge globally but until recently Pacific Island Countries (PICs) have been relatively sheltered from this phenomenon. However, changes to Australia's border security and refugee policies in recent years have significant implications for the Pacific because of Australia's determination to prevent asylum seekers from arriving by boat in Australian territory. This article examines Australia's so-called 'Pacific Solution', which entails the transfer of asylum seekers to camps in Nauru and Papua New Guinea, where they are detained pending determination of their refugee status and ultimate resettlement. The social impacts of Australia's policies include the heightened tensions that arise from establishing large detention facilities in small island communities, and the social costs of resettling persons who are found to be refugees among poor local populations. Australia's policies also have other impacts on PICs. Australia's selective allocation of foreign aid and other funds make PICs vulnerable to pressure from its developed neighbour, and create the danger that Australia's perceived 'problem' with unauthorised boat arrivals is being shifted to acquiescent countries in the Pacific.
Download or read book The Undesirables written by Mark Isaacs and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Friday 19th July 2013, it was reported in the Australian media that over 150 asylum seekers had rioted and razed the Nauru Regional Processing Centre to the ground. The Nauruan community were mobilised into an emergency police force in an attempt to subdue the men. Asylum seekers, Nauruans and Australian security forces were involved in clashes that left many asylum seekers seriously injured. Asylum seekers were arrested and placed into overcrowded jail cells with limited access to legal representation. The future of these men was in the balance. In the aftermath of the riot, Australian and Nauruan government officials condemned the actions of the asylum seekers. For many Australians this proved that asylum seekers are dangerous, and destructive. It proved that Australia needs harsher immigration measures to restrict the arrival of more asylum seekers. For Mark Isaacs, who had worked with the men in the Nauru Regional Processing Centre over the previous 10 months, this riot was an inevitable outcome of a cruel and degrading policy. It was a reaction to a build up of injustices these men had suffered throughout their incarceration in Nauru. Both devastating and encouraging, Mark's vignettes of life on Nauru and interactions with the men on the island give readers a first-hand experience of the realities of 'The Pacific Solution'. His unique voice and unbiased view allow readers to draw their own conclusions and holds up a mirror to the Australian government, and it's policies. This book is not a justification of the men's actions, it is an insight into life in the Nauru Regional Processing Centre in the lead up to that Friday evening. It is the story behind a riot. Australia's hard-line stance on asylum seekers is increasingly polarising the community and regardless of political stance, this haunting and eye-opening book is one every Australian should read in an era of increased secrecy around Australia's treatment of asylum seekers.
