Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union Pacific Railway: A Study in Railway Politics, History, and Economics The work of the student of history has heretofore been confined almost wholly to the political, religious and liter ary development of peoples; their industrial development has been subjected to inexcusable neglect. Yet the pillars of the dominance of the anglo-saxon race are its superior industrial attributes. What a people accomplishes industrially and how it accomplishes it. Go far to determine how it will be governed, what it will think and feel, and what it will write. The freedom of the individual that was the product of the eighteenth century has been more emphatically man ifested in the field of industry than in any other field of human activity. The growth of constitutional government in England is easily traced to the want of harmony be tween the Old political status and the newly developed indus trial status of English society. The increasing tendency to submit international disputes to arbitration is attributable not so much to a more enlightened repugnance to warfare as to the mere human fear of destruction of wealth and interfer ence with industries occasioned by it. The Annapolis Con vention had its origin in the desire of the American states TO consider how far a uniform system in their commer Cial relations might be necessary to their common inter ests. The slavery question was largely an industrial ques tion, and its solution was industrial, not political or moral. Book excerpt: The Pacific Electric Railway originally provided reliable transportation across more than 1,000 miles of track. Postwar society's affair with the automobile led to the loss of an infrastructure that could have formed the basis for an enviable modern light-rail system, one that current society would be happy to utilize. Authors Steve Crise and Michael Patris look back at the railway and its landscape today. Both serve on the board of the Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society, from whose archives most of these images are taken.

Book excerpt: A large federal cash subsidy aided CPR construction of the Crows Nest Pass Railway from Lethbridge, Alberta, to Nelson, British Columbia. The line, completed in late 1898, was designed to en-courage mining and smelting in the Kootenays and to link this region with Central Canada. From 1989 to 1914 the Great Northern Railroad in the United States also built lines into southern British Columbia to tap this valuable mining traffic. The CPR completed a line to Vancouver in 1915, by which time it dominated the regional traffic. However, it still faced competition for this traffic from the Great Northern which had allied itself with the Canadian Northern Railway. John Eagle examines the lengthy and bitter conflict which resulted between the two railways. Eagle provides the first scholarly analysis of the Crows Nest Pass Agreement of 1897. Under this historic agreement, the CPR stimulated prairie agriculture by lowering its freight rates on grain, matching both the lower rates of the Canadian Northern on grain and the rates on wheat established under the Manitoba Agreement of 1901. The development of southern British Columbia also opened a new market for prairie grain and cattle. The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Development of Western Canada challenges the prevailing view that CPR land policies were designed primarily to promote settlement in order to generate traffic for the railway. Eagle argues that the railway adopted policies which maximized profits from its agricultural lands so that proceeds from prairie land sales became an important source of revenue for the company.
