Book Synopsis Handbook for Research in American History by : Francis Paul Prucha
Download or read book Handbook for Research in American History written by Francis Paul Prucha and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Handbook for Research in American History was first published, reviewers called it "an excellent tool for historians of all interests and levels of experience . . . simple to use, and concisely worded" (Western Historical Quarterly) and "an excellent work that fulfills its title in being portable yet well-filled" (Reference Reviews). The Journal of American History added, "It is not easy to produce a reference work that is utilitarian and enriching and does not duplicate existing works. Professor Prucha has done the job very well." This second, revised edition takes account of the revolution that is occurring in bibliographic science as printed reference works extend to electronic databases, CD-ROMs, and online networks such as the Internet. Focusing on and expanding the major section of the original Handbook, it provides information on traditional printed works, describes new guides and updated versions of old ones, notes the availability of reference works and of some full-text sources in electronic form, and discusses the usefulness to researchers of different kinds of material and the forms in which they are available. Extensive cross-referencing and a detailed index that includes authors, subjects, and titles enhance the book's usefulness.

Download or read book Movie Mavens written by Richard Abel and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early era of cinema, moviegoers turned to women editors and writers for the latest on everyone's favorite stars, films, and filmmakers. Richard Abel returns these women to film history with an anthology of reviews, articles, and other works. Drawn from newspapers of the time, the selections show how columnists like Kitty Kelly, Mae Tinee, Louella Parsons, and Genevieve Harris wrote directly to female readers. They also profiled women working in jobs like scenario writer and film editor and noted the industry's willingness to hire women. Sharp wit and frank opinions entertained and informed a wide readership hungry for news about the movies but also about women on both sides of the camera. Abel supplements the texts with hard-to-find biographical information and provides context on the newspapers and silent-era movie industry as well as on the professionals and films highlighted by these writers. An invaluable collection of rare archival sources, Movie Mavens reveals women's essential contribution to the creation of American film culture.
Book Synopsis Civic Engagement in American Democracy by : Theda Skocpol
Download or read book Civic Engagement in American Democracy written by Theda Skocpol and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American democracy is in many ways more vital than ever before. Advocacy groups proliferate and formerly marginalized groups enjoy new opportunities. But worrisome trends exist. Millions of Americans are drawing back from involvements with community affairs and politics. Voters stay home; public officials grapple with distrust or indifference; and people are less likely to cooperate on behalf of shared goals. Observers across the spectrum of opinion agree that it is vital to determine what is happening and why—so that Americans can take well-informed, effective steps to revitalize our national community. The book opens with an eagle-eye look at the roots of America's special patterns of civic engagement, examining the ways social groups and government and electoral politics have influenced each other. Other chapters examine the impact of advocacy groups and socioeconomic inequalities on democratic processes and probe the influence of long-term social and cultural changes on voluntary associations and civic participation. The book concludes by asking why social liberation has been accompanied by new inequalities and the erosion of many important forms of citizen leverage and participation. Coming together from several disciplines, contributors include Jeffrey M. Berry, Henry E. Brady, John Brehm, Steven Brint, Elisabeth S. Clemens, Peter Dobkin Hall, Wendy M. Rahn, Kay Lehman Schlozman, Sidney Verba, and Robert Wuthnow. Copublished with the Russell Sage Foundation

Book Synopsis Multiculturalism in the College Curriculum by : Marilyn Lutzker
Download or read book Multiculturalism in the College Curriculum written by Marilyn Lutzker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-03-18 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing that diversity in the curriculum is as much about a way of thinking as it is about specific information, Lutzker presents a compendium of innovative and practical classroom strategies and widely available information resources which will enable faculty to increase the multicultural content of their courses without necessarily making major changes in their accustomed methods of teaching. This is a handbook for college faculty in all disciplines who would like to increase the multicultural content of their courses, but have been reluctant to do so for a variety of reasons including an already overloaded syllabus, a lack of background in the subject, uncertainty about student reactions, or lack of time to make substantial changes in an existing syllabus. Administrators anxious to increase diversity in the curriculum of their institutions, but unable to fund large-scale curriculum revision projects, will also find this volume useful. Part I is concerned with classroom strategies and with student research projects. Starting with discussions of objectives and priorities, the underlying role of critical thinking, and the importance of language sensitivity, the book then describes specific classroom strategies useful for increasing diversity. The subsequent chapters are devoted to discussions of general guidelines for developing student projects with a multicultural perspective, innovative alternatives to the traditional term paper, and suggestions for multicultural student projects which do not require library research. Part I concludes with a discussion of possible student reactions to increased multiculturalism, and suggested approaches to those reactions. Part II is concerned with information resources which will be useful to instructors and to students. Fully annotated lists are provided in a variety of areas including widely available primary sources, specialized biographical directories, sources for sample syllabi in all disciplines, guides to ethnic and foreign press, to films and videos, and to electronic resources. Part II concludes with a discussion designed to increase efficiency in using the library catalog to locate information in multicultural subject areas. Appendices provide sample research worksheets, a list of small publishers and distributors of multicultural books, and an annotated bibliography.
