Gansser, a member of the 126th Infantry, 32nd Division, arrived in France in March 1918, and entered the front-line trenches in late May. In July, the troops transferred to Chateau-Thierry and took part in the second battle of the Marne. Several weeks later, they fought in the Aisne-Marne offensive, followed by weeks of near-continuous combat in the Meuse-Argonne sector until the signing of the armistice in October. Following the war's end, the Division was stationed at a Rhine River bridge in Germany, returning to the U.S. in May 1919.
