Book excerpt: What happens when fate says 'go'? Lost & Found meets The Rosie Project in a stunning break-out novel where a vulnerable misfit is forced to re-engage with the world, despite her best efforts. Meet Mercy Blain, whose house has just burnt down. Unfortunately for Mercy, this goes beyond the disaster it would be for most people: she hasn't been outside that house for two years now. Flung out into the world she's been studiously ignoring, Mercy goes to the only place she can. Her not-quite-ex-husband Eugene's house. But it turns out she can't stay there, either. And so begins Mercy's unwilling journey. After the chance purchase of a cult classic campervan (read tiny, old and smelly), with the company of her sausage dog, Wasabi, and a mysterious box of cremated remains, Mercy heads north from Adelaide to Darwin. On the road, through badly timed breakdowns, gregarious troupes of grey nomads, and run-ins with a rogue adversary, Mercy's carefully constructed walls start crumbling. But what was Mercy hiding from in her house? And why is Eugene desperate to have her back in the city? They say you can't run forever... Exquisite, tender and wry, this is a break-out novel about facing anxiety and embracing life from an extraordinary new talent. PRAISE: 'Tender, funny and quietly profound, The Other Side of Beautiful is a breath of fresh air.' - The Sunday Times 'A colourful, engaging story of escape and road-trip adventure ... also compellingly cinematic and features an endearing narrator-heroine with plenty of meaty real-world troubles.' - Sydney Morning Herald 'An engaging story about second chances and a life changing road trip ... a heart-warming story.' - Canberra Weekly magazine 'Mercy Blain is a character you find yourself cheering on. Kim Lock mixes the transformative journey of Alice Hart with the quirkiness of Eleanor Oliphant in this story about embracing life, even when it threatens to overwhelm you' - Tricia Stringer, bestselling author of The Family Inheritance 'Mercy Blain is an unforgettable character who will capture your heart from the first pages and hold it through until the end. Her madcap journey towards forgiveness - of herself and others - is moving and funny and all other good things that will make you want to keep reading and make you sad when your time with Mercy comes to an end.' - Sophie Green, bestselling author of The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Circle

Book excerpt: These moments are based around dreams - the process of falling asleep, and turning into a character in the subconscious mind. The characters and stories that come to me in dreams are often the inspiration behind the experiences, but more in the sense that everything is hazy, nostalgic, and tinged with colors and déjà vu. Through each strange incident of our lives, we can often look back, through specific moments to our happy and sad times when our young, thoughtless hearts were free and unbound. We thought of the future as some bright and sunny landscape, and as youth advanced we began to build castles in the air, little did we know then that those were just delusional visions. Now, these moments are etched within us like a diary that peaks into our souls, wherein, is penned all the happiness, pain, trials and troubles of growing up, a chart on which our track is marked, pointing out all the dangers we have safely traveled through, on our voyage of life.

Book excerpt: A fictional story of Northwestern Himalayas – Small villages – A girl, her upbringing and culture with a combination of ancient and a bit of modernity. Along with tossing and turning experiences –– Stories composed ‘Around the Corner of Saroi’—A place where life is imagined as another world, exactly just at the end corner of the universe. A mixed memoir of personal and paternal life experiences – Description of cherished moments encountered in a joint family house called ‘Chowki House.’ While everyone is sitting on the patio, in the deep dark snowy and wintery nights, having endless gossiping sessions, in the open, close to a bonfire called angheetha in the local dialect and ‘brazier’ in today’s world. Though this narrative is totally fictional, the gist is inspired through the experiences of our forefathers and the narration of a particular community of that age that undoubtedly existed around that time. Highlighted the myths and misbeliefs that had prevailed over the period, carried on from generation to generation. Despite some of them being proved as having scientific notions behind them. While some had been in practice to keep family and community on the right track into closely knitted societal bonds. Otherwise, they have no meaning. However, “Other side of the Edge ” is not just about the pain and pleasure our forefathers' generations experienced in the olden days. It’s about the precious human values shared as a part of society that refused to be ignored. Where ‘family gathering’ was the one and only source of entertainment for extended families. To discuss, share their past and present experiences, and stand up together to prepare the best for the future of those they care about and want to have around them. Where bonding with relatives was meant to show ‘respect’ without being self-centred, rather than a gesture of formality. From my writing, I attempted to pen down those glimpses heard through the mouth of forefathers, and some of them sighted in childhood. Yet, perhaps there might be times I would not have understood precisely what the message meant during those tender years of childhood.

Somehow, deep down, we know there is more and wonder what will happen to us after leaving this world. Stories from the Other Side is based on Anny's numerous encounters with the dead that have occurred during hypnotherapy sessions. Join Anny as she shares fascinating real life stories from the ones who passed to the next plane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Other Side of the World: Vision and Reality embraces and celebrates the experiences of idealistic, young Peace Corps volunteers as they confronted the ancient and enigmatic civilization of India four decades ago. Prompted by memories and emotions tapped during a gathering on the 40-year reunion of their return to the States, members of India 44 A&B provide reflections that are honest, compelling, insightful, riotous, humbling, and yet redemptive. These reflections give expression to feelings long repressed and, at the same time, uncover the mysterious ways in which their service in remote India transformed and redirected the trajectory of their lives. Their stories provide a humorous and deeply moving description of village life, where imperfect language skills and limited technical capabilities interacted with good intentions and stubborn dedication to produce embarrassment on the one hand, and the occasional minor miracle on the other. This is not a feel-good testimony to the Peace Corps on its golden anniversary. Rather, it is a sobering depiction of the lives of volunteers living in one of the Peace Corps' most demanding site countries, where frustrations and challenges were found in abundance. Yet at the end of the day, these stories generally attest to the wisdom of the Peace Corps concept, which affirms the powers of volunteerism and the giving of self. For many, it was the first time these volunteers had articulated their feelings since leaving India. Mary Jo Clark, Thomas Corbett, Michael Simonds and Haywood Turrentine compiled the book. Respectively, the authors reside in San Diego, California, Madison, Wisconsin, the greater Hartford area, and Birmingham, Alabama. http: //sbpra.com/HaywoodTurrentine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mahnaz Afkhami picked up the phone in a New York hotel room early one morning in November 1978, she learned she could never go home again: she had been declared an apostate and enemy of the Iranian Revolution and was now on its death list. Afkhami, Iran's first minister for women's affairs, began to rebuild her life in the United States, becoming an architect of the women's movement in the Global South. Along the way, she encountered familial, cultural, political, and organizational hurdles that threatened to derail her quest to empower women and change the very structure of human relations. A skilled storyteller who has spent her life in two worlds, Mahnaz Afkhami shares her unexpected and meteoric rise from unassuming English professor to a champion of women's rights in Iran; the clash between Western feminists and those from the Global South; and the challenges of international women's rights work during the so-called war on terror. Her journey through exile shows what it takes to launch and sustain a worldwide grassroots movement: funding, an ever-expanding network, conferences, education, and decades of hard work requiring individuals and organizations to persevere despite ongoing wars, humanitarian disasters, and climate change. Told with humor, honesty, and compassion, Afkhami's remarkable story illuminates the possibility of bringing opportunity and choice to women across the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vein of Lyssa Kay Adams and Abby Jimenez, Kelly Ohlert’s charming debut is a one-of-a-kind rom-com that explores the power of overcoming the past and fighting for the things you love. Trixie isn’t exactly sure what she was thinking when she stopped her car in the middle of downtown Chicago, scooped up a chicken struggling to cross the road, and drove off… but she does know that she has to find a new home for herself and her new feathered friend. The landlord at her apartment doesn’t allow pets and has caught Trixie in one too many pet-smuggling attempts in the past. Bear likes his quiet life with his close-knit family, who own a flower business, but he’s in for a rude awakening when his meddlesome sisters post an ad to rent the spare room in his simple home, without asking his permission. Still, when Trixie responds to the ad, he agrees to let her move in, despite immediate worries about keeping things platonic. Determined to keep her new room, befriend Bear, and give her rescue chicken the care she deserves, Trixie fights to keep her walls up and resist her romantic feelings for Bear. However, it’s not long before the pair’s proximity and chicken parenting ignite flames that have Trixie and Bear testing the boundaries of their platonic ground rules. They have to figure out how to save a family business, pay for mounting vet bills, and navigate their own emotional baggage if they want to find the love that they all deserve. Perfect for readers of The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary, and fans of The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez, readers will find themselves rooting for every one of the relatable, but tenderly flawed, characters in this book as they follow the heartwarming antics of a rescue chicken and her human companions.

Some of us remember, some of us believe we are just dreaming, when in fact we are having flashbacks of our previous life. My story is true, and given in much detail to help one comprehend all the emotions felt during my past life, and how it revealed itself in to my present day life. The journey is a long, enlightening, and sometimes painful, but bittersweet.
