Download or read book Art & Energy written by Barry Lord and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Art & Energy, Barry Lord argues that human creativity is deeply linked to the resources available on Earth for our survival. From our ancient mastery of fire through our exploitation of coal, oil, and gas, to the development of today's renewable energy sources, each new source of energy fundamentally transforms our art and culture—how we interact with the world, organize our communities, communicate and conceive of and assign value to art. By analyzing art, artists, and museums across eras and continents, Lord demonstrates how our cultural values and artistic expression are formed by our efforts to access and control the energy sources that make these cultures possible.

It discusses the interrelatedness of these three factors. It addresses all three topics from a relatively long-term, global perspective and emphasizes interconnections and feedback Some of the topics covered in the book are the projections of the population, climate, technology, and the food and agriculture. The analysis of these projections is covered. The tools used in the analysis are discussed. The text defines the meaning of mesarovic-pestel world model, carrying capacity, stability, diversity, and ecological buffering. A comparison of the resulting projections is presented. The book will provide useful information to economists, political analysts, students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Changing the Boundaries by : Janice Jiggins
Download or read book Changing the Boundaries written by Janice Jiggins and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing the Boundaries explores gender relations with respect to education, reproductive health services, and agricultural resources -- three factors that are widely recognized as being central to the struggle for gender equity, population control, and environmental sustainability. As well as defining the role of women in the population-environment quandary, author Janice Jiggins explains how that role is the key to understanding issues of population and environment. Throughout the volume, she makes extensive use of research, experience, and documentation that draws on the views and publications of women in the global South, much of which is available to development practitioners but is rarely found in academic libraries. Data, arguments, concepts, and analysis from a wide and varied range of sources are woven together to link the experience of women's daily lives with population policies and global environmental politics.
Book Synopsis The Fuelwood Trap by : Barry Munslow
Download or read book The Fuelwood Trap written by Barry Munslow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 60 million people live in the SADCC countries; by 2000 AD the number will be over 100 million. The vast majority, city-dwellers as well as farmers, rely on wood fuel for domestic use. Supplies are diminishing as consumption grows. The quality of life is deteriorating yet further and the environment is more and more degraded. But these phenomena are not simply the consequence of a wood shortage which might be cured by some cropping and management policy. They flow from a complex network of causes each contributing in its way to growing poverty and want which has, as one obvious symptom, the shortage of fuel for life's basic purposes. The authors, by means of case studies, examine those causes throughout the nine SADCC countries and consider the policies that can be developed there which will not only help to alleviate the symptom but will help to prevent the imminent catastrophe which it represents.
