Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a new global approach, this unique book provides an updated review of the geology of Iberia and its continental margins from a geodynamic perspective. Owing to its location close to successive plate margins, Iberia has played a pivotal role in the geodynamic evolution of the Gondwanan, Rheic, Pangea, Tethys s.l. and Eurasian plates over the last 600 Ma of Earth's history. The geological record starts with the amalgamation of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic succeeded by the rifting and spreading of the Rheic ocean; its demise, which led to the amalgamation of Pangea in the late Paleozoic; the rifting and spreading of several arms of the Neotethys ocean in the Mesozoic Era and their ongoing closure, which was responsible for the Alpine orogeny. The significant advances in the last 20 years have attracted international research interest in the geology of the Iberian Peninsula. This volume presents the most comprehensive, careful and updated description of the variscan cycle in Iberia. This volume focuses in the different geological events since the Cambrian-Early Ordovician rift until the late variscan orocline formations including magmatic and metamorphic evolution.

Book excerpt: Pursuing an innovative, global approach, this unique book provides an updated review of the geology of Iberia and its continental margins from a geodynamic perspective. The significant advances in the last 20 years have increasingly attracted international interest in exploring the geology of the Iberian Peninsula. This volume focuses on the Cenozoic basins of the Iberian Geology and consequently the most recent sedimentary features in the Iberian Geology apart of the active ones. In this book, you will find a detailed explanation of the alpine foreland basins, the extension of the west Mediterranean as well as the latest magmatism in Iberia.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Iberian Massif, the Ossa-Morena Complex and its prolongation in the NW Iberia allochthonous complexes represent the outermost section of the North African margin of Gondwana. This margin hosted a long-lived magmatic arc active at least between c. 750 to 500 Ma. The activity of this arc can be traced by sedimentary sequences deposited along the margin and igneous rocks generated during the arc construction, as well as by deposits generated during its progressive dismantling. The dynamic evolution of the peri-Gondwanan North-African margin from the Late Ediacaran to the Early Cambrian resulted in a complex tectonic configuration involving units with continental affinity and others of oceanic/transitional nature. This PhD Thesis presents the results obtained from the study of this margin section preserved in SW Iberia and suggests a possible geodynamic and petrogenetic model based on its geochemical and isotopic evolution. This peri-Gondwanan arc section is probably one of the best well-preserved in the Variscan Orogen. The results also include the identification of previously undescribed tectonostratigraphic units, and the detailed description of a new ophiolitic unit, the Mérida Ophiolite. The methodology used includes a structural study of the units implied in this section, whole-rock and isotopic (Sr-Nd) geochemistry, and geochronology (U-Pb ) of implied rocks. The study of the Merida ophiolite further included Hf isotopes in the analyzed zircons. The results have been published in journals of impact in Earth Sciences. In this sense, this volume is presented as a compilation of publications following a chronological and thematic order...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Structural Control” remains a crucial point that frequently lacks in any scientific and/or economic analysis of ore deposits, whatever their type and class. The case of lode deposits is exemplary, although also other deposits, like breccia pipe, stockwerk, massive sulphides, skarn, etc., can, surprisingly, be concerned. Several concepts like the gold-bearing shear zone have not proven valid during the last few decades in terms of our understanding of gold deposit and have been totally abandoned. Additionally, the relationships between magmatism, regional tectonic context, and mineralization remain uncertain and have been debated in several recent publications. This demonstrates that this issue is still relevant, and its solution may help in the distinction between intrusion-related and orogenic deposits. In this Special Issue, we particularly invite any case study of mineral deposits, in which it has been demonstrated that structural geology may have a significant role in the establishment of the deposit model of formation and/or on exploration and exploitation programs. Examples in which the structural model diverges from those described in the classical literature are particularly welcomed, including studies in which relationships with magmatism can be suspected and/or demonstrated. Indeed, all cases that illustrate concepts that differ from the classic ones and from theoretical models may represent significant contributions to this volume.

Book excerpt: The book brings together contributions from over 35 Portuguese geomorphologists, presenting a thorough overview of the main highlights of the landscape of Portugal's mainland, Azores and Madeira. The book, which is a tribute to Professor António de Brum Ferreira, first President of the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists and former Professor at the University of Lisbon, who passed away in January 2013, is organized in 3 parts: a) Introduction, which presents a general framework of the physical geography of Portugal, b) Geomorphological landscapes, presenting ca. 30 short papers with regional focus on key geomorphological areas, c) Applied geomorphology, providing an updated vision on the protection of geomorphological heritage with a focus on geoparks, as well as on Geomorphological hazards in Portugal. This first book ever to concentrate on the geomorphology of Portugal will surely become a benchmark for Portuguese geomorphology.

Book excerpt: This book provides a compact, up-to-date and detailed overview of the vegetation of the Iberian Peninsula, a highly diverse part of Europe in the Mediterranean area. Written by a group of experienced researchers, the volume includes a first section with general chapters discussing the climate, the biogeography and the flora, and a second section with detailed descriptions of the 14 regional sectors into which the peninsula and Balearic Islands have been divided. A third section explores special features, such as aquatic vegetation, gypsum and dolomite vegetation, coastal vegetation, mountain flora and vegetation, conservation issues and alien flora.
